Build the dashboard around serializable tile records, a clearly defined placement rule, and a deliberately narrow backend contract. “Zero-dependency backend” is not a complete architecture specification: decide whether it means no runtime packages, no database, no external services, or some combination before choosing how the dashboard stores layouts or obtains health data.
Define what the dashboard is for
Start with the job the dashboard must do. A service launcher with a small health badge has different requirements from a monitoring system that retains metrics, logs, uptime history, and alerts. Adding those capabilities changes the data sources, persistence, and operational scope; they are not prerequisites for a useful tile dashboard.
Service catalog and lightweight status
A focused first version can list services, link to them, and show a current status. Homepad is an example of this narrower scope: its project describes service badges for UP, DEGRADED, DOWN, or UNKNOWN, along with favorites and tile ordering. Homepad project

A broader monitoring dashboard may need checks over HTTP, HTTPS, TCP, ping, or DNS, plus uptime records, logs, resource metrics, and alerting. MangoRack describes this wider feature set and a Next.js 14, PostgreSQL, and Redis stack. That stack illustrates one project’s choices; it does not establish what your dashboard needs, or satisfy any particular definition of a zero-dependency backend. MangoRack project

Prefer the smallest scope that answers a real need. Add histories, metrics, logs, or alert rules only after identifying the source of that data and how the dashboard should use it.
Choose what “Tetris-tiled” means
Two common layout behaviors lead to different interaction and persistence rules. Decide whether tiles should keep explicit positions or be packed automatically, and specify what happens on resize, deletion, collision, and a narrow viewport.

Model the layout as data
Keep each tile’s identity and configuration separate from the renderer. A practical starting record contains an ID, a content type, grid coordinates, width and height, and the configuration needed to render that tile. The layout as a whole can then be saved and reloaded as structured data.

GridStack’s project README demonstrates serialized widget records with position and size fields, as well as loading saved records. This supports the data-model pattern; it does not prescribe how your application must persist records or validate them. GridStack project README
- Identity: Give tiles stable IDs so editing or deleting one tile does not depend on its current position.
- Content type: Use a known type to select the renderer rather than treating arbitrary markup as a tile definition.
- Geometry: Store coordinates and dimensions in a consistent grid coordinate system.
- Configuration: Store tile-specific settings separately from layout geometry, so changing a tile’s appearance does not require changing the placement model.
On every layout change, validate that dimensions and coordinates are within the chosen grid bounds and that tiles do not overlap if the selected mode forbids overlap. Define these rules alongside the data format; the cited examples do not specify validation behavior for your application.

Set the zero-dependency boundary
Write down which dependencies are excluded before selecting an implementation. “Zero-dependency” could refer to backend runtime packages, a database, external services, or build-time tooling; those are different constraints. Also identify the supported runtime and whether frontend libraries are allowed.

It is an optional frontend layout tool, not a backend architecture. Including it still means adding a frontend library, so it fits only if the dependency boundary permits that. The project site displayed a version string in search results, but that alone is not reliable current package metadata; check the release documentation you plan to use when implementing. A CSS Grid layout with application-owned placement logic is another possible approach, but the cited project material does not establish browser compatibility details or implementation costs for that option. Treat it as a design choice to validate against your supported browsers rather than assuming a particular behavior from these examples.

Decide how layout data is saved based on who uses the dashboard and how much recovery or sharing it needs. Browser storage, a flat file, and a database have different operational consequences; the project examples do not validate one as the right persistence choice for your requirements.
- Single-user convenience: A browser-local layout may be sufficient if the arrangement only needs to follow that browser.
- Backup and recovery: Decide how a saved layout can be exported, backed up, and restored after loss or migration.
- Multiple users: Determine whether users share one arrangement or need separate layouts and preferences.
- Status data: Choose whether the dashboard checks services itself, consumes an existing monitoring source, or displays status entered by a user.
For monitoring, make the data contract explicit before adding checks: define timeouts, how old data may be before it is shown as stale, and what authentication is required. Without those decisions, a status tile can look current while conveying an unclear or outdated result.
Plan interaction and trust boundaries
For each layout mode, specify how users add, move, resize, and delete tiles; what happens when tiles collide; and whether positions are preserved or reflowed at smaller sizes. If the dashboard offers multiple viewport arrangements, decide whether it saves a distinct layout for each one or derives narrower layouts from a single saved arrangement.
Also decide how the dashboard is exposed on your network, who can access it, and whether any tile content is allowed to render user-provided HTML. Service names, links, and controls can be sensitive in a self-hosted environment. The cited project descriptions do not establish a security design, so authentication, network exposure, and content handling need to be specified for the actual deployment rather than inferred from a layout library or example project.
