You can turn a Canva email design into HTML, but exporting is only the handoff: you still need a destination that can send it, any platform-specific personalization and unsubscribe fields, and a test in real inboxes. For a campaign, import Canva’s HTML and image files into an email service provider (ESP) that supports custom HTML; for a one-off or small-group message, Canva also documents sending through Gmail. Canva’s general export workflow does not send email directly.
Choose where the email will be sent
Pick the sending destination before you finish the design. The right route depends on whether this is an individual message or a managed campaign.
| Route | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail | A one-off or small-group send. | Canva says Gmail is not built for bulk or automated campaigns. Expect some differences between the Canva preview and Gmail’s rendering. Canva’s Gmail guidance |
| ESP HTML import | Campaigns that need list management or automation. | The ESP must support custom HTML import. You will need to verify merge tags, unsubscribe handling, and the imported layout. Canva documents Mailchimp, HubSpot, and Brevo among platform options. Canva’s email-platform guidance |
| Canva-to-Mailchimp publishing | A direct integration route for Mailchimp users. | Canva documents publishing one email page at a time, a design size under 100KB, and availability in all regions except China. Account access and product limits can change. Canva’s Mailchimp instructions |
If you are still choosing a destination, confirm it supports the sending scale and features you need before designing around it. Canva’s Canva Email overview explains the general design-to-send workflow.
Build and preview the design in Canva
Use Canva Email to lay out the message with elements such as text, images, buttons, columns, headers, footers, and icons. Preview the design before exporting, and use Canva’s test-email option where available. The editor is useful for checking the composition, but it cannot guarantee identical rendering across email clients: those clients interpret HTML and CSS differently.
#1 Best Overall
Keep the email’s purpose clear even when images or styling are unavailable. Use readable text, make important links easy to identify, and avoid relying on a complex layout to communicate essential information. Canva notes that some features or elements on its email product page may require Canva Pro or Canva credits, so do not assume every asset or feature is included at no cost. Canva Email
Export the Canva email as HTML
For a general ESP import, Canva’s documented workflow is to download a ZIP containing the HTML and images, then import those files into a platform that supports custom HTML. The exact import labels vary by provider; look for an option such as “Import HTML,” “Code Your Own,” or “Custom HTML.”
- In Canva, open the finished email design and choose the download option for HTML and its linked assets.
- Save and unzip the downloaded file so the HTML and image assets are available to upload.
- In your ESP, create an email using its custom-HTML import route and upload the HTML and any required images.
- Inspect the ESP’s imported version. Confirm that images load, links point to the right destinations, and the layout has not changed unexpectedly.
Canva says many ESPs do not allow drag-and-drop editing after an HTML import. If the visual design needs adjustment, revise it in Canva and export again. Edit the raw HTML only if you are comfortable doing so and the ESP permits it. Canva’s HTML handoff and platform instructions

Publish directly to Mailchimp instead
Canva also documents a direct Mailchimp route from Share > Mailchimp. The integration publishes an email-doctype page as Email (HTML), one page per publish. Canva’s current help content says the design must be under 100KB and the integration is available in all regions except China. These are product constraints, not general limits for every HTML-email import; check the current in-product options and connected account if publishing is unavailable.
For this direct integration, Canva says compliance links in the design are converted to Mailchimp merge tags. Verify the resulting fields in Mailchimp before sending. Canva’s Mailchimp publishing instructions
Complete personalization and unsubscribe handling in the ESP
A design can look finished while still lacking the sending fields an ESP needs. Canva says it does not yet support ESP-specific merge tags. It also warns that unsubscribe links and merge-tag items shown in Canva may be placeholders; add or replace them in the destination platform, then confirm they resolve correctly.
Rank #3
For Mailchimp’s direct integration, Canva says compliance links are converted to Mailchimp merge tags. That does not remove the need to inspect the imported campaign and confirm that recipient personalization and unsubscribe behavior work as intended. Canva’s documentation notes that an unsubscribe link is legally required under applicable email-compliance rules; requirements depend on the rules that apply to your send. Canva’s platform guidance
Send a test and inspect the rendered email
Send a test through the actual destination platform before launching the message. Inspect it in the inboxes and on the devices your audience is likely to use; the Canva editor preview alone is not proof of how the email will appear after delivery.
- Check text, images, buttons, and every link, including footer links.
- Confirm fonts, spacing, and columns remain readable, especially on a phone.
- Verify merge tags show the intended recipient information rather than placeholder text.
- Check that the unsubscribe link appears and behaves as expected.
Canva recommends test sends and notes that email clients handle HTML and CSS differently. Its guidance specifically warns about Gmail’s handling of media queries and some Outlook-oriented optimizations. Canva’s email workflow overview
Why does my Canva email look different in Gmail?
Gmail does not necessarily render the exported email as Canva displays it. Canva states that “Gmail strips out media queries and some advanced email styles.” A multicolumn design may therefore fail to stack as expected on a smaller screen, and other layout or style differences can appear. Canva’s Gmail troubleshooting guidance
If the Gmail test looks wrong, simplify the layout, reduce reliance on responsive styling that Gmail may strip, and send another test. Check the actual inbox view on a phone as well as a desktop. Canva also warns that the result may not match the editor preview.

Fonts or styles change
Email-client support varies. Canva recommends email-safe fonts and native email components. Check the rendered test message rather than treating the Canva preview as authoritative.

Charts or embedded content are static
Canva says embeds, sheets, charts, and some design elements export as images. They will not update from their source data or remain interactive in the email. If the information needs to change or be usable as a link or control, provide an appropriate live destination instead of relying on the image to behave interactively.
Video turns into a GIF
Canva says videos convert to GIFs when exported or sent. A GIF has no sound, may increase the email’s file size, and is not the same as an in-email video player. Most email clients cannot play video directly in an email, so test the result and consider using a static image that links to the video.
The ESP will not let you visually edit the imported design
Many ESPs do not support drag-and-drop editing after an HTML import. Make the visual change in Canva and export again, or edit the HTML directly only if you are comfortable with code and the platform supports it.
Mailchimp publishing is unavailable or fails
Check that the Mailchimp account is connected, the design is a single email page, and its size meets Canva’s documented under-100KB requirement. Canva’s help page says the integration is unavailable in China. If those conditions appear to be met, check the current Canva publishing options and account access, since product availability can change. Canva’s Mailchimp instructions
