Inferential statistics use sample data and probability to estimate or test claims about a broader population. The key distinction is whether your conclusion stops at the data in hand or reaches beyond them.
What is the difference between descriptive and inferential statistics?
OpenStax puts the first half plainly: “Organizing and summarizing data is called descriptive statistics.” Inferential statistics use formal methods to draw conclusions from data about a larger group or process. OpenStax, Statistics, section 1.1.
| Question | Descriptive statistics | Inferential statistics |
|---|---|---|
| What is the scope? | The observed dataset or sample | A target population or process beyond the observations |
| What does it do? | Organizes, displays, and summarizes data | Estimates a population value or evaluates a claim about it |
| Typical outputs | Graphs, averages, percentages, and other summaries | Point estimates, confidence intervals, and hypothesis tests |
| How is uncertainty handled? | Reports the data as observed | Accounts for sampling variability and depends on the method’s assumptions |
The arithmetic alone does not determine the category. A mean calculated from a sample is descriptive if it summarizes that sample; the same mean can be used as an estimate of a population mean in an inferential analysis.
Population, sample, statistic, and parameter
- Population: the full collection of people, things, or objects you want to understand.
- Sample: a selected subset of that population. Sampling can be practical when examining the full population would require substantial time or money.
- Statistic: a value computed from sample data, such as the sample mean.
- Parameter: a value that describes the population, such as its true mean.
Inference uses statistics calculated from a sample to learn about population parameters. That reach is only as credible as the sampling and assumptions supporting it.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Descriptive statistics: summarize what you observed
Descriptive work can include arranging data, presenting them in a graph, and calculating numerical summaries such as an average. These methods help readers see patterns in the data actually collected; by themselves, they do not establish what is true of people or items that were not observed.
Example: scores in one class
If a teacher calculates the average score for every student in one class, the result describes that class. It remains descriptive even if the calculation is a mean, because the conclusion concerns only the observed scores.

Inferential statistics: use a sample to learn beyond it
Inferential methods include estimates and tests. A point estimate gives one value as an estimate of an unknown population parameter. An interval estimate gives a range intended to capture that parameter under the method’s assumptions. A hypothesis test evaluates sample evidence relative to a specified claim.
Example: estimating a school-wide average
If a researcher selects a sample of students and uses their scores to estimate the average for all students in a school, the researcher is making an inference. Whether the estimate supports that wider conclusion depends on how the sample was selected and whether the analysis assumptions are reasonable.

Examples of estimation and testing
OpenStax illustrates estimation with listed two-bedroom rents in a town and with a basketball shooter’s successful shots across attempts. In each case, sample observations can be used to estimate a broader value, but the example alone does not establish that a particular sample represents the target population. OpenStax on estimating a single population mean.
Testing addresses a claim rather than simply producing an estimate. For instance, data on truck fuel economy can be used to test a claim about average fuel economy. A test does not prove a claim: it assesses whether the sample provides sufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis under the procedure used. OpenStax on null and alternative hypotheses.

What confidence intervals and hypothesis tests tell you
Confidence intervals
An interval estimate communicates uncertainty in a sample-based estimate rather than presenting a single sample result as if it were the exact population value. NIST describes interval estimates as a way to quantify uncertainty in a sample estimate. The range is interpreted under the method’s assumptions; it is not a guarantee that the unknown parameter falls inside it. NIST/SEMATECH Engineering Statistics Handbook: confidence limits.
Hypothesis tests
A hypothesis test evaluates evidence from data against a specified claim about a population parameter. Its result is a decision under the test’s procedure—not proof that the claim is true or false. NIST’s handbook discusses tests as procedures for assessing claims about parameters. NIST/SEMATECH Engineering Statistics Handbook: hypothesis testing.

A quick way to classify a statistical result
- Name the data: What people, items, or observations were actually measured?
- Identify the conclusion: Does it describe only those observations, or make a claim about a wider population or process?
- Check the method: If the conclusion reaches beyond the observed data, identify the estimate or test and consider the sampling and assumptions that justify it.
If the conclusion stops at the data you have, it is descriptive. If it uses those data to estimate or test a claim about something beyond them, it is inferential.
