Dependency Inversion Principle (DIP) is about which direction dependencies point and whether high-level policy relies on an appropriate abstraction. Liskov Substitution Principle (LSP) is about behavior: whether one implementation can replace another wherever a type is expected without breaking correctness. They solve different design problems and can reinforce each other.

How do Dependency Inversion and Liskov Substitution differ?

Principle Question it asks Relationship it governs Problem it helps reveal
Dependency Inversion (DIP) What depends on what? Dependency direction and abstraction High-level policy is coupled directly to low-level implementation details
Liskov Substitution (LSP) Can this implementation safely stand in for the expected type? Behavioral substitutability A subtype or implementation breaks the expectations callers rely on

In short, DIP concerns the shape of dependencies; LSP concerns whether behavior remains correct when one type is substituted for another. An interface can help establish a dependency boundary, but it cannot guarantee that every implementation honors the interface’s behavioral promises.

What does Dependency Inversion mean?

DIP says high-level policy should not depend directly on low-level implementation details. Instead, both should depend on an abstraction suited to the policy. Robert C. Martin’s concise formulation is: “One should depend upon abstractions, rather than concrete implementations.” The SOLID reference page includes this formulation.

For example, imagine order-processing policy that needs to save an order. If that policy directly constructs and calls a particular database adapter, its rules are tied to that implementation. A domain-relevant persistence abstraction can put the dependency boundary where the policy needs it; the policy and the adapter can then depend on that abstraction.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The abstraction should express what the high-level policy needs, rather than merely rename a low-level database API. DIP does not require an interface for every class: an abstraction adds complexity, so its value depends on the problem and the expected lifetime of the software. Fowler notes that a direct dependency can be reasonable in software with a short half-life. See Martin Fowler’s discussion of DIP in practice.

What does Liskov Substitution mean?

LSP says that a subtype should be usable wherever its base type is expected without changing the program’s correctness. The SOLID reference page states: “Objects in a program should be replaceable with instances of their subtypes without altering the correctness of that program.” This is a behavioral requirement, not just a matter of sharing method names or signatures.

In the order example, LSP asks whether each persistence implementation honors the contract expected by its callers. What counts as success or failure? What does retry mean? An adapter that returns success before the promised save has occurred, or fails in a way callers were told would not happen, may violate those expectations even if it implements the same methods as another adapter.

LSP applies to subtyping and behavioral substitutability; it does not require that types be organized as a literal parent-and-child class hierarchy. The practical test is whether callers can rely on the stated contract when an implementation is exchanged.

How do the principles work together?

  1. Set the boundary with DIP. Identify the high-level policy’s need and define an abstraction that expresses it, instead of making the policy depend directly on a specific implementation.
  2. Check implementations with LSP. For each implementation of that abstraction, verify that its success, failure, and other promised behavior match what callers expect.
  3. Review both questions separately. Ask whether the dependency points to the right abstraction, then ask whether each substitute preserves the contract. Passing one test does not imply passing the other.

Fowler describes a connection between DIP’s structural implications and principles including the Open-Closed Principle and LSP, while still treating them as distinct ideas. His concise distinction among neighboring terms is: “DI is about wiring, IoC is about direction, and DIP is about shape.” His article explains the distinction.

Is Dependency Inversion the same as dependency injection?

No. Dependency Inversion is a design principle about abstraction and dependency structure. Dependency injection (DI) is a way to provide an object with a dependency rather than having it create that dependency itself. Inversion of control (IoC) concerns who initiates calls or controls a sequence. DI can be used to wire a design that follows DIP, but using DI alone does not prove that the dependency points to a suitable abstraction.

What should you look for in a code review?

  • DIP: Does high-level policy depend directly on a concrete implementation? If there is an abstraction, does it describe the policy’s needs or simply mirror a low-level API?
  • LSP: Can callers replace one implementation with another without special cases or changed correctness? Do all implementations honor the same expectations for success, failure, and retry?
  • Proportionality: Does adding an abstraction solve a real coupling problem, or does it add complexity without enough benefit for this software’s needs and expected lifespan?

Martin Fowler’s 2013 article, “DIP in the Wild”, discusses the context-dependent cost of abstraction. Robert C. Martin’s article index lists “The Liskov Substitution Principle” in March 1996 and “The Dependency Inversion Principle” in May 1996; those are article-index dates, not evidence that the principles are interchangeable.
