Choose the 2026 Dell XPS 13 if you need Windows, want a touchscreen, or prefer Dell’s range of Intel configurations. Choose the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 if you want macOS and value its listed display specifications, MagSafe charging, and Apple’s battery-life estimates. Neither is the right choice for everyone: compare the exact memory, storage, ports, and price of the configuration you would buy.
Which laptop should you choose?
The most important difference is the operating system. The 2026 XPS 13 runs Windows and is available with Intel Core Series 3 and Core Ultra Series 3 options. Apple’s current 13-inch MacBook Air uses the M5 chip and macOS. If an application your work or school depends on requires one platform, that can settle the decision before you compare hardware.
If both platforms suit you, weigh the XPS’s documented touch display and configuration choices against the Air’s display, MagSafe charging, and Apple’s stated battery estimates. The 13-inch Air is the relevant comparison here; Apple also lists a 15-inch model, but it is a larger laptop class.

Pick the XPS 13 if Windows is a requirement
Choose the XPS if your workplace, school, or essential software requires Windows, or if you specifically want a Windows laptop. Check compatibility for the exact applications and peripherals you use; the product specifications cannot determine whether your particular workflow is supported.

Pick the MacBook Air if you want macOS
The Air is the natural fit if you prefer macOS or your existing workflow depends on Apple devices and services. Confirm that the applications, accessories, and workplace tools you rely on support the Mac before buying.
Decide whether touch or the Air’s display better suits you
The XPS’s 2.5K touchscreen and 30Hz-to-120Hz variable refresh rate make it the option to consider if you want direct touch input. Dell also lists a backlit keyboard. Apple’s 13-inch Air has a 13.6-inch, 2560-by-1664 display rated at 500 nits, with P3 color and True Tone. These specifications describe different strengths; they do not establish which screen will look better to you in every setting.

Compare the configuration you will actually buy
Do not treat “XPS 13” or “MacBook Air” as a single fixed specification. Dell’s options vary by processor, memory, storage, and port standard. The reported 8GB RAM in the reviewed U.S. base XPS configuration is especially important if your normal workload keeps many applications or browser tabs open. The reported 16GB upgrade also changed storage to a 512GB SSD, so the price difference may reflect more than memory alone.

Apple lists 16GB unified memory in current base configurations, with higher-memory choices; storage also varies. Before deciding on value, write down the exact processor, memory, storage, and port standard for each candidate, then compare their local prices. A low starting price is not a like-for-like comparison if one configuration has less memory or storage.

Check ports, charging, and external-display needs
The Air lists two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, MagSafe 3, and a headphone jack. The XPS has two USB-C ports, but their standard varies by configuration: TechRadar reports USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 on its reviewed model and Thunderbolt 4 on a Core Ultra 7 configuration. If you connect a display, dock, wired network adapter, or other USB-C device, verify the exact XPS SKU’s port capabilities and the display support you need.
MagSafe gives the Air a dedicated charging connector, while its USB-C ports remain available for other devices during charging. If you plan to charge through a dock or USB-C adapter, check that the selected accessory supports your laptop and intended display setup. A hub or dock is only necessary if your devices require connections the laptop itself does not provide.

Read battery figures in context
Apple’s “up to” claims—18 hours of video streaming and 15 hours of wireless web—are manufacturer estimates. Dell’s “up to 17 hours” streaming figure comes from a May 2026 Dell lab test on a specified Core 5 320 system with 16GB memory and a 512GB SSD, at 150 nits with wireless enabled. These different vendor claims are not a controlled head-to-head test.
Tom’s Guide recorded 14 hours and 26 minutes for its XPS 13 review unit while continuously surfing the web over Wi-Fi at 150 nits. That is a result for that review unit and test workload, not a direct comparison with Apple’s estimates. Real battery life depends on configuration and use, so treat the figures as context rather than a guarantee for your day.

Consider portability and price without overgeneralizing
Dell lists the XPS 13 at 1kg (2.2lb) and 12.7mm thick; Tom’s Guide gives its review unit as 2.2lb and 0.50 inches thick. Those figures support the XPS’s ultraportable positioning, but verify the dimensions and weight for the regional configuration you are considering.
Dell’s listed U.S. prices—$699 starting and $599 for eligible students under offer terms—are dated examples, not a current comparison against a matched MacBook Air. The current local prices for equivalent memory and storage configurations were not established. Check the retailer or manufacturer listing for your region and compare the exact SKUs before treating one as better value.
Make the final choice
- Choose the Dell XPS 13 if you need Windows, want touch input, or want to choose among Dell’s Intel configurations.
- Choose the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 if you want macOS and prefer its listed display features and MagSafe charging.
- Before paying, compare exact memory, storage, processor, port standards, and local price—not just the product-family names.
