For everyday use, the Dell XPS 13 (2026) is the better fit if you want Windows, a touchscreen and a lighter laptop; the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 suits you better if you prefer macOS and want MagSafe charging, a headphone jack and Apple’s specified display features. Neither is a universal winner: choose by software compatibility, memory, ports and current local price. The battery figures available for these models come from different claims and test methods, not a direct comparison.

Specifications and manufacturer battery estimates do not establish which screen looks better or which laptop lasts longer in matched use. Configurations, test conditions and regional prices matter.
Which operating system and apps do you need?
Start with the software you must use for class, work or personal projects. The XPS 13 runs Windows in the reviewed context, while the MacBook Air runs macOS. Check that required applications, accessories and any organization-managed tools support the operating system you choose. If you already rely on one platform’s apps or device ecosystem, that compatibility may matter more than a small difference in weight or listed specifications.

The available evidence does not establish that Windows or macOS is universally better for school, office work, browsing or video calls. Make the choice against your actual apps and workflow, rather than assuming one system will be faster or easier for everyone.
Which is easier to carry and better for your display needs?
Dell lists the XPS 13 at a starting weight of 2.2 lb; Apple lists the 13-inch Air at 2.7 lb. The XPS is lighter by those published figures, but confirm the weight of the exact configuration you intend to buy.

The display choice is about features, not a proven overall quality ranking. Dell lists a 2.5K touchscreen and describes a variable refresh option up to 120Hz. Apple specifies a 13.6-inch, 2560-by-1664 display rated at 500 nits, with P3 wide color and True Tone. These specifications alone do not show which screen will look better to you; the evidence here does not include matched independent display testing.

Dell advertises up to 17 hours of streaming for the XPS 13. In a separate test, Tom’s Guide measured 14 hours and 26 minutes of continuous Wi-Fi web browsing at 150 nits on its XPS 13 (2026) review unit. That result applies to that test method and machine configuration.

Apple advertises up to 18 hours of video streaming or 15 hours of wireless web browsing for the 13-inch Air. These are manufacturer estimates; realized battery life varies with use and configuration. Because the published figures use different workloads and evidence types, they do not show which laptop will last longer in a direct, like-for-like test.
How many ports do you need?
The reviewed XPS configuration has two USB-C ports, and charging uses one, leaving one available while plugged in. If you regularly connect several wired devices, a hub with power delivery may help; it is an optional accessory, not a requirement for every buyer.

The Air has two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, plus MagSafe 3 for charging and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Since charging can use MagSafe, it does not have to occupy a USB-C port. Apple lists support for up to two external displays. Consider the ports and display connections your actual desk setup needs before deciding whether you will need adapters or a hub.
How much memory should you choose?
Compare specific configurations, not just laptop names. Dell lists XPS 13 options up to 32GB memory and 1TB storage. Apple lists the M5 Air’s starting configuration as 16GB unified memory and 512GB SSD, with upgrade options.

TechRadar’s reviewed XPS was a UK standard configuration with 8GB RAM and a Core Ultra 5 320. The reviewer found browsing, word processing and light image editing usable, but reported that heavier workloads exposed the limits of 8GB. That is a caution about the reviewed 8GB model, not proof that every XPS 13 configuration has the same limitations. For multitasking or more demanding work, check the exact memory configuration and compare it with your needs before paying.
How do you make a fair price comparison?
Dell’s May 31, 2026 announcement gave a US starting price of $699 for general buyers and described a $599 back-to-school offer for eligible students ages 16 and older. The offer may not still be available. Apple’s cited technical-specifications page does not establish a current purchase price.
Check the live price in your country and compare machines with similar memory and storage. A starting price is not a like-for-like value comparison if one configuration has less memory, different storage or a different screen option. Do not treat Dell’s announced student offer as a current or universal price without confirming eligibility and availability.
Which laptop should you choose?
- Choose the XPS 13 (2026) if you want Windows, value a touchscreen or prioritize the lower listed starting weight. Make sure the memory configuration suits your workload.
- Choose the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 if you prefer macOS and value its separate MagSafe charging connection, headphone jack, specified display features or listed support for two external displays.
- Pause and compare configurations if your decision depends on battery life, speed or price. The evidence cited here does not provide a direct battery or performance test between these exact models, and a fair price comparison requires current regional prices and comparable memory and storage.
For school, office work, browsing, video calls and media, either can be a sensible everyday choice when it runs your required apps and has enough memory. Choose the operating system and configuration you will actually use, then check the current price and exact specifications before ordering.
