Yes—deleting an AWS Copilot service, environment, or application can delete database resources managed by the CloudFormation stacks being removed. Whether the database itself is deleted, retained, or snapshotted depends on its resource type and the deletion policy in the deployed template. Check the actual stack and template before running a deletion command.
What Copilot deletes—and what decides the database’s fate
Copilot commands identify the scope of the deletion. CloudFormation then deletes the relevant stack and applies the lifecycle policy configured for each resource in it. The command alone does not tell you whether a particular database will remain available.
| Command | Scope documented by AWS Copilot |
|---|---|
copilot svc delete |
Deletes resources associated with a service in a particular environment. See Copilot’s service delete documentation. |
copilot env delete |
Deletes the environment’s CloudFormation stack. Copilot instructs users to delete running applications in the environment first. See Copilot’s environment delete documentation. |
copilot app delete |
Deletes all resources associated with the application. The individual stack resources’ policies still determine their outcomes. See Copilot’s application delete documentation. |
Copilot’s storage guide also distinguishes workload storage from environment storage: workload storage is deployed and deleted with its service or job, while environment storage remains until you run copilot env delete. See Copilot storage documentation.
How CloudFormation handles database resources
CloudFormation’s DeletionPolicy controls what happens to a resource when its stack is deleted. If no policy is set, CloudFormation generally deletes the resource, but RDS resources have specific defaults. AWS documents these defaults in its DeletionPolicy reference:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

AWS::RDS::DBInstancewith noDBClusterIdentifierdefaults toSnapshot. - An
AWS::RDS::DBInstanceassociated with a cluster throughDBClusterIdentifierdefaults to deletion.
These defaults are not a substitute for checking the deployed template: an explicit policy can change the behavior. Also identify whether you have a standalone DB instance, a DB cluster, or an instance associated with a cluster. AWS explains the resource properties and deletion protection for DB instances and DB clusters.
Choose whether you need the live database or a recovery point
| Policy | Result when the stack is deleted | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
Retain |
The resource remains, but is no longer managed by the deleted CloudFormation stack. | The database can remain available, but you must track and manage it outside that stack. It may continue to incur charges. |
Snapshot |
CloudFormation creates a snapshot before deleting the supported resource. | A snapshot is a recovery artifact, not a live database. It may continue to incur storage charges. |
| No applicable policy | CloudFormation generally deletes the resource, subject to resource-specific defaults such as the RDS cases above. | Confirm the exact resource type and effective template policy before deletion. |
A retained database and a snapshot solve different problems. Use Retain if the database itself must survive stack deletion; use Snapshot if you need a point-in-time recovery option and accept that the database resource will be deleted.

Check the deployed stack before deleting it
- Identify the command’s scope. Determine whether you are deleting one service in one environment, the environment, or the whole application. For environment deletion, Copilot’s documented sequence requires running applications to be deleted first.
- Find the database in the actual CloudFormation stack. Review the stack’s resource list and identify the database resource type and any association to a cluster. Do not assume that a database is safe because it was created as an add-on or because its configuration file appears separate.
- Inspect the deployed Copilot-generated add-on template. Check the effective
DeletionPolicyon the database resource. A policy in a local file is useful only if it is present in the deployed stack configuration. - Set the intended lifecycle in the infrastructure definition. Choose retention for a live database or a snapshot for a restorable backup, then deploy or update the stack so the policy is in effect before deleting it.
- Verify the effective configuration and recovery plan. Confirm the policy and identify how you will manage a retained resource or restore a snapshot. Do not proceed with an important database until the expected result is clear.
Deletion protection and backups are not the whole plan
RDS deletion protection can block deletion while it is enabled, but its defaults vary by resource and creation path. Treat it as a guardrail, not as a replacement for inspecting the template and setting the lifecycle behavior you need. AWS documents deletion-protection properties for DB instances and DB clusters.
Automated backups are also distinct from a CloudFormation snapshot or a retained live resource. They may remain only for their configured retention period and can incur storage charges; see AWS re:Post’s RDS deletion guidance. Verify which recovery artifacts your database has and how long they remain available.
