Deleting a file usually removes or changes the filesystem record that locates it; it does not necessarily overwrite the file’s contents. Recovery may be possible until those contents are overwritten or otherwise made inaccessible, but there is no reliable rule that they persist for “weeks or months.” The outcome depends on the storage type, what happens to the device afterward, and whether it has been sanitized.
What happens when you delete a file?
On many systems, deletion marks a file’s storage space as available for reuse and removes the ordinary reference to the file. The data may remain on the storage medium for a time, but it is no longer available through the usual file listing. Microsoft explains that data deallocated by the operating system can sometimes be viewed and recovered using raw disk editors or recovery tools: Microsoft Learn’s SDelete documentation.
This is different from overwriting: overwriting writes new data over the old data. NIST SP 800-12 describes the distinction between deleting a file pointer and overwriting the data: NIST SP 800-12, Chapter 14. Ordinary deletion alone therefore does not prove that the underlying contents have been erased.
Can someone recover photos after you delete them?
Sometimes. If the data has not been overwritten and remains accessible on the medium, recovery software or forensic tools may be able to reconstruct files or parts of them. But deletion does not guarantee recovery, either: the file’s data may have been reused, the device may have discarded it, or other changes may make it inaccessible.

There is no generally supported recovery percentage or fixed retention period. In particular, the claim that deleted bytes remain recoverable for weeks or months is not a dependable technical rule. A file might be unrecoverable soon after deletion, or remain recoverable longer, depending on the device and its use.
Why the storage type matters
Magnetic hard drives
On a magnetic hard drive, deleting a file typically makes its space available for reuse rather than immediately overwriting its contents. Subsequent writes can replace that data, so continued use of the drive can reduce the chance of recovery. The timing cannot be predicted from the fact of deletion alone.

SSDs and other flash storage
Flash storage complicates the idea that a host-level overwrite or deletion maps neatly to a particular physical location. The device’s internal management can mean that writes sent by the operating system do not reach unmapped physical media. NIST’s Rev. 1 guidance discusses this limitation; for current sanitization decisions, consult the newer Rev. 2 guidance rather than treating the older text as a complete current procedure: NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1.

If your goal is to protect sensitive information, deleting files is not the same as sanitizing a storage device. NIST defines media sanitization as “a process that renders access to target data on the media infeasible for a given level of effort.” Its 2025 guidance says to select applicable techniques in light of the media and the information’s sensitivity: NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2.

Choose an approach based on what the device is, what you plan to do with it, and the recovery effort you need to deter:
- Identify the medium. Determine whether it is a magnetic hard drive, SSD, or another kind of flash storage. Do not assume that a method intended for one behaves the same on another.
- Consider the information. The more sensitive the data, the more assurance you may need that it cannot be accessed.
- Decide whether the device will be reused or disposed of. The appropriate technique can depend on whether the media stays under your control or leaves it.
- Use guidance that matches the device and assurance level. NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 (2025) provides a framework for selecting sanitization techniques; ordinary deletion should not be treated as proof of sanitization.
If you need to recover valuable files, avoid writing new data to the affected device, since reuse can overwrite recoverable contents. Recovery is not guaranteed; the result depends on the device and the state of its data.
