To remove searches you have made on Facebook, use the recent-search list in the search box to delete individual entries, or open Activity Log and clear the search history listed there. The steps below cover Facebook search history only. If you meant login sessions or devices signed in to your account, those are a separate set of security controls, and this article does not cover them.
Search history and login sessions are different things
Facebook search history is a record of what you typed into Facebook’s search box and the results you chose. A login or session history is an account-security record of where and when your account was signed in. The controls for each live in different places, so check which one you mean before you start. Everything in this article applies to searches.
Remove searches from the search dropdown
The quickest route works for one or a few entries at a time. Per the Security.org guide “How to Clear Your Facebook Search History in 2026” (updated June 15, 2026), the search dropdown lets you remove recent entries directly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Click the search field at the top of Facebook. Your recent searches appear in a dropdown.
- Find the entry you want to remove and use the removal control beside it. This deletes that one search from the list.
- To work through the whole list, use the Edit link in the dropdown. The guide describes this link as the way into Activity Log, where the full history is kept.
Clear your full search history in Activity Log
Activity Log is the broader route. It shows older entries that the dropdown does not display, and it gives you both single-item and bulk controls. The guide describes this path:

- Open Activity Log, either through the Edit link in the search dropdown or from your account’s activity area.
- Select Logged information.
- Select Search.
- Select Your search history. The list of past searches appears.
- To remove one entry, use its delete control. To remove everything in the list, select Clear searches.
Meta’s own description of Activity Log, published in its Newsroom post “An Update to Activity Log” on September 21, 2012, states the same principle: “Just as you can choose to delete any of your posts, you can use the same inline control on Activity Log to remove any of your searches at any time.” That statement describes the feature as it worked in 2012, so confirm the current labels on your own screen.
Choosing between single deletion and clearing everything
The two routes differ in scope and in how far back they reach. Use the table to pick the one that fits.
Rank #2
| Goal | Route | Scope | Reaches older entries? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hide one recent search | Remove control beside the entry in the search dropdown | One search | No. The dropdown shows recent entries only |
| Clean up a handful of old searches | Activity Log, then Logged information, Search, Your search history, then the delete control on each entry | One search per action | Yes |
| Wipe the displayed history | Activity Log, then Logged information, Search, Your search history, then Clear searches | Everything in the displayed list | Yes, for the list Facebook shows |
What clearing search history does and does not cover
Clearing searches affects the search-history entries Facebook shows you. The sources describe these controls specifically. They do not describe them as a way to remove posts, comments, or other activity categories, so do not assume one clear action covers everything in your account.

The accessible evidence did not confirm how long Meta retains search data on its systems after you delete it from your view. Treat “clear” as removing the entries from your history, not as a guarantee that no copy exists anywhere.

On visibility, Meta’s 2012 post said that “no one else can see your Activity Log, including your search activity.” That was Meta’s position at the time. It does not confirm how every current privacy setting or interface works, so check your current privacy settings if visibility matters to you.
Can the search history be deleted automatically?
The sources reviewed for this article did not establish an automatic-deletion setting for Facebook search history. The controls described above are manual. If you want to clear searches regularly, you would need to repeat these steps yourself.

If the labels on your screen differ
Facebook’s wording and placement can vary by app version, browser, and device. Meta’s Help Center has a page titled “Clear your recent Facebook searches,” but its current text and mobile steps could not be checked for this article. The labels in this guide describe where each control leads and what it does, so you can find the equivalent on your device:
- If you do not see an Edit link in the search dropdown, look for a removal control beside each recent entry first.
- For the full list, look for an activity or history area that contains a Logged information section, then a Search section beneath it.
- Inside that section, look for the list of your searches and a bulk option that clears it.
- If you use the Facebook app on a phone, the route may be different from the desktop steps above. Check the app’s account or settings menu for an activity or history option.
