Here, “deferred execution” means postponing a response to a request because saying no feels uncomfortable. Khali Sollis uses the software metaphor in a personal essay—not as a clinical diagnosis or established psychological term. The essay’s point is that a vague “Maybe later” can leave expectations unresolved rather than spare anyone discomfort.
What “deferred execution” means in this essay
In software, deferred execution describes work scheduled to happen later. Sollis borrows that idea for an interpersonal habit: delaying a reply when the answer is already no, or when the person would rather not agree. Examples include “Maybe later,” “I’ll think about it,” and saying nothing.
The metaphor is useful for describing the behavior, but it is not a formal psychological construct. Sollis’s essay is personal commentary, not a study establishing that delaying a refusal always causes harm.

In Sollis’s account, a maybe can leave the requester uncertain about whether to expect agreement. That uncertainty may keep a conversation or possible commitment open, and can create expectations that become more awkward to correct later. The author describes this as an emotional backlog: the initial discomfort is put off while the unresolved request remains.

- ✔This daily plan pad features detailed hourly schedule timelines from 12 AM to 11 PM, perfectly segment your morning, afternoon and evening hours. Track meetings, appointments and fixed tasks hour by hour to eliminate procrastination and boost your daily time management efficiency.
- ✔ 1.Put an end to the time black hole: Every hour of activity is recorded, so you always know where your time goes and bid farewell to "being busy yet achieving nothing". 2.Cure procrastination: Visual time grids have an inherent sense of supervision; blank time slots serve as a direct reminder, with more binding power than phone alerts. 3.Gain instant a sense of accomplishment: Check off completed tasks with a simple tick. A filled time axis page by page delivers physical feedback that digital tools cannot match, making it easier to keep going the more you use it.
- ✔ 1.Students & Exam Takers: Plan class, review and practice time; allocate study hours for each subject precisely for targeted exam preparation. 2.Professionals: Schedule meetings, work projects and commute time; prioritize tasks clearly and bid farewell to chaotic overtime. 3.Freelancers & Stay-at-Home Parents: Clearly divide work/childcare/personal time to avoid blurring the boundaries between life and work. 4.Self-Discipline Enthusiasts: Check in on fitness, reading and learning; develop regular routines with hourly scales to build good habits effortlessly.
These are plausible interpersonal costs the essay highlights, not measured or universal effects. The title’s argument is about a possible trade-off: less discomfort in the moment can mean more ambiguity and friction later.
When the decision is clear, answer clearly
Sollis recommends checking whether the request fits your availability and priorities. If the decision is already no, state it plainly. The essay’s example is: “No, I’m not available for that.”

A real pause is different from indefinite avoidance
Not every delay is avoidance. You may need information, time to check your schedule, or a chance to decide whether a request fits your priorities. In that case, the decision is genuinely open. A useful distinction is whether you intend to return with an answer or are using a vague delay to avoid giving one.

A 2016 review, “Situational Strategies for Self-Control”, discusses avoidance as a possible way to cope with stress and notes that directly addressing a problem may be more effective over the long term. That is broad context about self-control strategies, not direct evidence about refusing requests or proof of Sollis’s claims.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
Sollis’s essay presents no study, sample, or quantified outcome. There is no statistic in the cited material that establishes how often delayed refusals damage trust, or that they reliably create tension in work or personal relationships.

A 2022 Frontiers in Psychology study, “The moderating role of sex in the relationship between executive functions and academic procrastination in undergraduate students”, involved 106 university students and examined academic procrastination. It did not test interpersonal refusals, workplace requests, or relationship trust, so its sample and findings cannot establish the essay’s central claim.
A practical way to decide what to say
- Check whether the answer is actually settled. If you need information or time to decide, say so and give a realistic time to respond.
- If the answer is no, say no. Use direct wording rather than “Maybe later” or “I’ll think about it” when you do not mean to reconsider.
- Offer an alternative only if you want to. A different time or form of help can be useful, but it should not be a courtesy promise you do not intend to keep.
The goal is not to eliminate every uncomfortable conversation. It is to avoid presenting an answer as open when it is already decided.
