Deep-cleaning a phone should mean removing grime carefully—not soaking, spraying, or scrubbing it. Turn the phone off, unplug it, remove its case, and start with a clean, dry, soft microfiber or lint-free lens cloth. Use moisture or disinfectant only when the instructions for your exact phone model allow it, and never spray liquid directly on the device.
What to do before cleaning
- Power down and disconnect. Turn off the phone and unplug its charging cable and other accessories.
- Remove the case and attachments. This keeps trapped grit from rubbing against the phone while you clean. Clean the case separately according to its material and maker’s instructions.
- Check for grit. If you see sand or other debris on the screen, avoid grinding it across the glass. Use a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber or lens cloth and wipe gently.
Clean the phone in stages
Start dry for dust and fingerprints
For routine dust, fingerprints, and smudges, begin with a dry, clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Apple and Samsung recommend soft lint-free cloths for routine wiping, and Google recommends a dry cloth for Pixel dust, streaks, and smudges. Make light passes rather than pressing hard or repeatedly scrubbing. Apple’s iPhone cleaning instructions, Google’s Pixel cleaning guidance, and Samsung’s Galaxy cleaning guidance differ on which liquids are allowed, so do not assume one maker’s method applies to another phone.
Add limited moisture only if the model’s instructions permit it
For residue that remains, follow the exact phone maker’s directions. Apple recommends a soft, slightly damp lint-free cloth and says not to use cleaning products except as described in its disinfection instructions. Google says a slightly damp cloth can be used for color transfer, and permits screen wipes or eyeglasses cleaner for screen grime. Samsung permits a small amount of distilled water on a cloth for stubborn dirt. These options are not interchangeable across all phones.
Do not spray or pour cleaner onto the phone. If the device’s instructions allow a liquid, apply it to the cloth as directed, then gently wipe the exterior. Keep moisture and soap out of ports and other openings, and do not submerge the phone. Avoid abrasive cloths, forceful rubbing, compressed air, bleach, and unapproved household chemicals.

Disinfect only according to your phone’s instructions
Routine cleaning and disinfection are different tasks. The permitted products vary by maker, and the concentrations below are manufacturer instructions—not comparative test results or a guarantee that a surface is germ-free.

Regional instructions can differ. Samsung India also advises against excessive wiping and says it cannot guarantee the efficacy of its cleaning guidelines; results may vary. Why aggressive cleaning can damage the finish
Apple says an iPhone has a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic, or oil-repellent, coating. Its support page warns that cleaning products and abrasive materials can diminish that coating and may scratch an iPhone. The coating also wears over time through normal use, so careful cleaning cannot preserve it indefinitely. Do not generalize Apple’s coating description to every phone model.

- Keep liquids away from openings: moisture or soap entering ports can cause problems. Never spray cleaner directly on the device.
- Avoid unapproved chemicals: Apple excludes bleach and hydrogen peroxide from its iPhone disinfection guidance; Google excludes bleach wipes and warns against solvents, abrasives, chemical detergents, and chemical agents.
- Do not use compressed air: Apple and Google advise against it, and Samsung warns it may damage the device surface.
- Do not treat water resistance as permission to wash the phone: Google says IP68 protection on Pixel 9 models applies when the device leaves the factory and can diminish or be lost through wear, repair, disassembly, or damage. This is model-specific guidance, but supports avoiding washing or submerging any phone.
If you own a Pixel Fold, Google specifically warns against picking at the display edges or attempting to remove the protective film. For other foldable phones, follow the exact model’s care instructions rather than lifting or scrubbing at the screen film. Clean the case separately
Remove the case before cleaning the phone, then use the case maker’s directions for its specific material. Samsung warns that its phone-cleaning method may damage plastic, rubber, or leather accessories. Do not assume a wipe or solution approved for a glass phone surface is safe for a case.
