An AI assistant can suggest why a JavaScript error occurred, but its explanation is a hypothesis until you check it against the running program. Start with the error message and stack, trace the failing operation to its inputs, inspect the live values in browser DevTools, then reproduce the same path after making a fix.

Read the error before changing code

Begin with four clues in the console: the error type, its message, the file and line reference, and the call stack. A message such as TypeError narrows the kind of operation that failed; the location points to where the runtime noticed the problem. Neither necessarily explains how the program reached that state. Exact wording can vary by browser, as MDN notes in its JavaScript debugging and error handling tutorial.

Read the stack from the frame closest to the failure outward to its callers. The first relevant frame often shows the operation that threw; the frames beneath it can reveal which application path called it. Treat the stack as a map, not a diagnosis: inspect the code at the reported location and trace the values it uses back through the callers.

Error.stack is widely implemented and useful for debugging, but it is non-standard. Its precise contents and formatting are inconsistent across engines, so do not build assumptions around identical stack text in every browser or runtime. The general frame order is often the direct call near the top, with earlier callers below it. See MDN’s Error.prototype.stack reference.

Reproduce the failing path and inspect its inputs

A highlighted line is where the runtime detected a problem, not always where the defect began. A value may have been missing, malformed, or transformed earlier. Reproduce the same user action or data path that triggers the error, then inspect the values immediately before the failing operation. MDN’s debugging tutorial illustrates why tracing intermediate values matters: an unexpected value can originate upstream from the line that throws.

Use the console for a quick, focused check

In browser DevTools, the console can run JavaScript in the context of the current page as well as display errors. Log only the inputs that help test a specific hypothesis. For example, if a function reads profile.name, inspect profile and the value supplied by the caller before assuming the property access itself is the whole problem.

Console output is useful when you know which values to check. It is less helpful when the important state is unknown or depends on execution order: logging requires code edits and another run, and it shows only what you chose to print.

Pause with a breakpoint when state or order is unclear

Set a breakpoint on the failing line or in the function that feeds it, then reproduce the error. A breakpoint pauses execution so you can inspect the values at that moment rather than infer them from output added in advance. While paused, examine local and surrounding scopes, the call stack, and—where useful—watch expressions. Step through nearby statements to see where the value changes. Chrome’s Debug JavaScript guide describes this workflow; MDN also explains the debugger’s call stack and scopes.

Trace bundled code back to the source you wrote

If an error points into minified or compiled output, the deployed file may be difficult to read. Source maps can let DevTools display authored files, map errors and breakpoints, and show original files in the call stack. They help only when the build produces source maps, the server makes them available, and JavaScript source maps are enabled in DevTools. Chrome’s source maps guide explains these requirements. If the authored file does not appear, check those conditions before treating the generated line as the only available evidence.

Verify a fix against the same failure

Change the cause you identified, then run the same action or input that produced the error. Confirm that the expected result occurs and that the console no longer reports the original failure. Also try nearby cases—such as missing or empty data—when they are relevant to the code path. A defensive check can be appropriate, but a guard that silently skips invalid data may conceal a defect rather than correct it. Likewise, a broad catch that suppresses an exception can make the symptom disappear while leaving the underlying failure intact.

Catch errors only to recover, report, or clean up

Use try/catch when the code can take a meaningful recovery action or report a useful failure at that boundary. During debugging, use console.error in a catch block rather than treating the exception as ordinary output; MDN covers this and JavaScript’s error-handling flow in its control flow and error handling guide.

Use finally for cleanup that must happen whether an operation succeeds or throws—for example, releasing a resource or restoring state. It is not a substitute for handling an error, and it runs regardless of whether an exception occurred.

Preserve the underlying cause when adding context

When you catch an error and rethrow it with a clearer message, retain the original error using the cause option:

throw new Error("Loading profile failed", { cause: err });

This gives a reader or diagnostic tool both the higher-level context and the underlying failure. MDN documents Error.cause as available across browsers since September 2021. Prefer structured cause data over code that parses human-readable message text, which is not a reliable machine-readable contract.

Choose the inspection that answers the question

Technique Use it when What it reveals
Console inspection You have a specific value or hypothesis to check. Selected values you print or evaluate in the page context.
Breakpoint and stepping The relevant state is unknown or execution order matters. Live values, visible scopes, and the path through statements at the pause.
Source maps The stack points into bundled or minified output. The authored source corresponding to deployed code, when maps are generated, served, and enabled.
try/catch/finally The program needs a recovery or reporting action, or reliable cleanup. Control over exceptional flow; it does not by itself identify the original defect.

These techniques answer different questions and can be combined. A useful debugging loop is: locate the failing operation, reproduce it, inspect its live inputs and callers, correct the cause, and confirm the same path behaves as intended.
