If a feed jumps after you prepend items, the browser may be compensating for the movement while your application’s scroll code is also changing position. Separate those effects before changing CSS: reproduce the prepend, inspect scroll handlers, and compare with browser anchoring temporarily disabled. Only opt out with overflow-anchor: none if the diagnosis shows that browser anchoring conflicts with the intended behavior.
Why a feed can move when you prepend items
CSS scroll anchoring is a browser mechanism intended to preserve what the user is reading when content changes outside the visible area. The browser selects a descendant of the scrolling box as an anchor; if that node moves, the browser can adjust the scroll offset to keep it in view. The CSS Scroll Anchoring Module Level 1 describes the problem this way: “Changes in DOM elements above the visible region of a scrolling box can result in the page moving while the user is in the middle of consuming the content.” That document is a W3C CSS Working Group Working Draft published 11 November 2020, and it identifies itself as work in progress.
With a prepended feed, browser compensation is only one possible contributor. Application code may also preserve the reader’s position by measuring content or writing a scroll position. The browser mechanism is documented, but the sources do not establish how any particular feed is implemented. Treat the interaction between anchoring and application code as a hypothesis to test in the affected interface.
How to determine what changed the scroll position

Reproduce the real layout
Test the prepend using the same scroll container, item sizes, and event handlers as the affected feed. Establish whether the page’s document viewport scrolls or whether the feed sits in a nested scrolling element. A simplified test can miss behavior that depends on the actual structure.

Inspect code that reads or writes scroll position
Review scroll listeners and any code that writes a scroll position around the prepend. MDN notes that unexpected behavior can occur when a
scrollevent listener does not account for the additional scrolling used to compensate for anchor movement. Check the timing and conditions of those handlers rather than assuming every observed change came from the browser. -
Compare with anchoring temporarily disabled in Firefox
In Firefox, set
layout.css.scroll-anchoring.enabledtofalseas a diagnostic comparison. To see which node Firefox selected as the anchor, uselayout.css.scroll-anchoring.highlight. These preferences help isolate the browser mechanism; they are not application fixes. See MDN’s scroll anchoring overview.Rank #2

Look for layout changes that suppress anchoring
Inspect style and layout changes affecting the anchor and its ancestors. The W3C specification and MDN list changes to properties including
top,left,right,bottom, margins, padding, width- or height-related properties, and transforms among suppression triggers. A position change anywhere in the scroll container is also listed. Such changes can make two seemingly similar prepend cases behave differently. -
Check scroll snapping if the feed uses it
When scroll snapping applies, anchoring adjustments are limited to changes that re-snapping would allow. Factor that constraint into a comparison rather than expecting anchoring to preserve an arbitrary offset. See the W3C specification and MDN guide.

When to use overflow-anchor: none
The default value of overflow-anchor is auto. Setting it to none opts the relevant area out of anchor selection. If your diagnostic comparison shows anchoring is causing the unwanted movement, test a narrowly scoped opt-out on the relevant container or subtree:
.feed { overflow-anchor: none; }Scope matters: an opted-out subtree cannot turn anchoring back on for an ordinary descendant. Applying none high in the page can therefore affect more content than intended. Older browser versions may not support the property, so check the browsers and devices your interface targets. MDN’s reference for overflow-anchor labels it Baseline 2026 and says it became newly available in September 2026; that label is not a substitute for checking the support matrix relevant to your users.

These are diagnostic and implementation choices, not universal prescriptions. Confirm whether the unwanted movement still occurs with anchoring disabled, then check the result in the actual browser versions and scroll-container structure you support. The reviewed documentation does not establish a definitive cross-browser behavior matrix or validate a particular feed implementation.
