Firebug and FirePHP once let developers inspect a page in Firefox and view PHP-side log messages in Firebug’s console. That workflow is obsolete: Firebug reached end of life with Firefox 57 in 2017. Today, use Firefox DevTools for browser debugging and its integrated ChromeLogger-protocol support for server logs; neither is a PHP step-through debugger.

What Firebug and FirePHP did

Firebug was a Firefox extension for inspecting and debugging web pages. Mozilla author Jan Honza Odvarko wrote that, when Firebug appeared in 2005, it was “the first tool to let programmers inspect, edit, and debug code right in the Firefox browser.” Mozilla later described unification work culminating in Firebug 3, also called Firebug.next, in 2015. These are milestones in the project’s history, not recommendations for software to install today. Mozilla’s 2017 account of Firebug explains the project’s end of life.

FirePHP complemented Firebug by sending PHP-side server messages to the Firebug console through HTTP response headers. Because the messages traveled in headers rather than being inserted into the response body, they could be viewed without adding debug text to the page’s HTML. This was a way to inspect server log output alongside browser activity, not a way to step through PHP execution in a debugger. Mozilla’s description of server logging in DevTools confirms the server-log use case.

Why you should not set up the old extensions now

Firebug reached end of life alongside Firefox Quantum 57 in November 2017. The Firebug project repository says support for old-style extensions stopped with Firefox 57. The project repository and Mozilla’s farewell article document that transition.

The FirePHP listing on Mozilla Add-ons shows version 1.5.7, last updated October 10, 2020. That historical listing does not establish compatibility with current Firefox or PHP releases. A package-registry listing likewise is not proof of compatibility. Avoid treating either as a current installation guide; consult contemporary documentation for any package you consider adapting. See server logs in DevTools instead

Mozilla says server-log support using the ChromeLogger protocol is integrated into Firefox DevTools, so this route does not require the FirePHP browser extension. The key distinction is where the code runs: the Web Console and Debugger handle browser-side JavaScript, while ChromeLogger-style output exposes messages produced by the server. Mozilla’s explanation of integrated server-log support

The available sources do not establish current, version-specific PHP installation steps or package compatibility for recreating the old FirePHP setup. Do not assume the historical add-on or a package listing will work with a current stack. Check the documentation for the specific server-side logger and Firefox release you intend to use before configuring it.
