To debug a classic ASP page, enable server-side ASP debugging for its IIS application, then request the page through IIS while Microsoft Script Debugger or Visual InterDev is available to catch execution. Visual InterDev’s workflow is historical: its guide describes debugging ASP scripts running on IIS, but does not establish that the retired IDE works on current Windows or IIS releases. These steps concern classic ASP, not ASP.NET.
Before debugging: confirm the page is classic ASP on IIS
Run the page through the web server rather than opening the file directly. Confirm that its directory is configured as an IIS application. The IIS 6 instructions make the application’s Configuration control available after an application has been created. The documented interface is specific to IIS 6-era administration; later IIS versions expose Classic ASP settings differently.
For the IIS 6-era interface, open IIS Manager, select the application, open its properties, choose the Debugging tab, and enable Enable ASP server-side script debugging. In the later IIS 7/8 configuration context, Microsoft documents the Classic ASP setting appAllowDebugging as false by default. Do not assume that the IIS 6 property-sheet path or its labels apply unchanged to later IIS versions. Microsoft: ASP configuration for IIS

Debug a server-side ASP request
- Enable server-side debugging for the application. Use the IIS configuration interface for your IIS generation; the IIS 6 SDK describes the Debugging tab, while later IIS versions use the ASP configuration section.
- Make the script debugger available. Start Microsoft Script Debugger, or use Visual InterDev to launch the page if working in the historical Visual InterDev environment. The IIS SDK says a requested ASP page can invoke the debugger when an error occurs or execution intentionally halts.
- Set a breakpoint before the suspect statement and repeat the request. When execution pauses, inspect values and trace procedure calls to locate where behavior diverges from what you expect.
- Classify the failure before changing code. A syntax error prevents or interrupts execution; a run-time error occurs when an operation cannot be performed; a logic error can let the page run but produce an incorrect result.
- Edit the source in an editor, save it, and rerun the request. Script Debugger helps locate bugs; it does not directly edit scripts. Remove any VBScript
Stopstatements used to halt execution before deploying the page.
Microsoft’s IIS SDK describes the debugger’s role this way: “You cannot use Microsoft Script Debugger to directly edit your scripts, only to locate bugs.” It also warns: “Remember to remove Stop statements from production .asp files.” Microsoft: Debugging ASP Applications in IIS
Useful Classic ASP settings in later IIS versions
Microsoft’s IIS 7/8 configuration guidance distinguishes several settings that can affect diagnosis. The defaults below belong to that documented configuration context, not every IIS release.

Use detailed browser errors only on a controlled development system: they may expose file names and implementation details. For IIS 7/8, Microsoft also documents command-line configuration through appcmd; consult the configuration reference for the applicable section and syntax rather than applying IIS 6 GUI instructions to a different generation.
If a breakpoint does not fire
- Verify the request reaches the expected IIS application and that the application’s server-side debugging setting is enabled.
- Check that the debugger is attached or being invoked for the script engine handling the request.
- Confirm that the request actually executes the code containing the breakpoint. A different route or an unexecuted branch will not pause there.
- If the failure involves a COM component, check the exception-trapping setting. In the cited IIS 7/8 guidance,
exceptionCatchEnableis enabled by default; disabling it prevents Script Debugger from catching component exceptions.
These checks follow from the documented application setting and debugger behavior; they are diagnostic steps, not a guarantee that every breakpoint problem has the same cause.

What Visual InterDev can—and cannot—establish
The Visual InterDev 6.0 Programmer’s Guide describes debugging server scripts executing on IIS from within Visual InterDev. Its indexed text says ASP-page debugging requires IIS 4.0 or later and names Automatically enable ASP server-side debugging on launch as an option for pages launched from within a project. The guide is a scanned historical manual, useful for understanding the period workflow but not evidence of current compatibility. Visual InterDev 6.0 Programmer’s Guide (scan)
The available documentation does not establish supported installation paths, licensing, or compatibility for Visual InterDev or Microsoft Script Debugger on current Windows versions. Reproducing this workflow is therefore a legacy-system task; keep such an environment isolated from production. Visual Studio’s current ASP.NET debugging guidance is for a different platform and is not a replacement procedure for classic ASP in Visual InterDev.

Choose the right debugging path
Before following a legacy procedure, identify the IIS generation and the kind of code involved. Server-side classic ASP, client-side debugging, COM exceptions, and ASP.NET are different concerns; settings for one do not automatically enable or explain another. If you need to reproduce the historical Visual InterDev workflow, use documentation for that period and treat present-day compatibility as unverified.
