A self-hosted proxy can help reduce unwanted web requests, but filtering and compression are separate features. For most readers, the practical starting point is an explicit proxy that compatible clients are configured to use. Privoxy can filter requests and optionally compress buffered content, but compression is off by default and may make performance worse. HTTPS inspection is a separate choice that requires clients to trust the proxy’s certificate.
What a self-hosted proxy can—and cannot—do
A proxy sits between a client and the sites or services it contacts. Depending on its configuration, it can filter requests, route traffic, and sometimes modify content. Those capabilities should not be conflated:
- Filtering can block requests to selected hosts or URLs. If a blocked item is never fetched, that can reduce traffic, but it is not response compression.
- Compression changes the size of eligible response content. Privoxy documents an optional setting for compressing buffered content.
- HTTPS interception is needed if the proxy must inspect or modify encrypted page contents. Ordinary HTTPS proxying does not provide that access.
Privoxy describes its main purpose as blocking and filtering requests, including ads and other unwanted content. Its manual also documents optional content compression, but cautions that compressing between programs on the same machine is likely to slow things down. Privoxy configuration manual
Choose how clients will reach the proxy
When a browser or other client supports proxy settings, begin with an explicit proxy: configure the client to connect directly to the proxy. mitmproxy describes its regular mode as the simplest and most robust mode, with port 8080 as its default example. Privoxy’s quickstart uses 127.0.0.1:8118 as a localhost example. These are software-specific examples, not universal ports or bind addresses. mitmproxy modes Privoxy quickstart

| Approach | Client changes | Routing work | HTTPS page contents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Explicit proxy | Configure each compatible client to use the proxy. | Clients connect directly; no transparent redirection is needed. | Ordinary CONNECT traffic remains encrypted from the proxy unless the client trusts an interception CA. |
| Transparent routing | Clients need not be configured with proxy settings. | Requires network-layer traffic redirection and routing. mitmproxy documents support for Linux and macOS in its transparent-mode guide. | Transparent routing alone does not make encrypted contents readable. |
| HTTPS interception | Install and trust the proxy’s generated CA certificate on each client that will be intercepted. | Can be combined with a routing approach; it is a separate decision from how traffic reaches the proxy. | The proxy can inspect traffic because the client trusts it as an intermediary. |
Transparent proxying can be useful where clients cannot be configured, but it adds network setup. mitmproxy points to WireGuard and local capture modes as alternatives that may be easier in relevant situations. Some applications may bypass system proxy settings, so a configured browser or device proxy does not guarantee that every app’s traffic will pass through it. mitmproxy modes mitmproxy transparent mode
Configure Privoxy filtering and optional compression
Privoxy is a plausible choice when request filtering is the main goal. Its compression option is not an automatic property of running a proxy: the manual sets enable-compression to 0 by default. Compression works only when the program was built with FEATURE_COMPRESSION, the client supports the delivered encoding, and the content is eligible. Small content below the documented threshold is not compressed. Privoxy configuration manual

- Install Privoxy on a host reachable by intended clients. This can be an existing computer or server; a dedicated always-on machine is optional, not required.
- Choose filtering rules for your use case. Test sites and services you rely on: filters may block legitimate resources, and a blocked resource can affect how a page works.
- Decide whether to test compression. Check that your build includes
FEATURE_COMPRESSION; then enableenable-compressionin the Privoxy configuration only if you want to measure its effect. The manual’s quoted default-state description is: “Privoxy does not compress buffered content.” - Configure a client to use the proxy. Use the address and port configured for your installation rather than assuming an example port applies.
- Test normal browsing before adding HTTPS interception. Filtering that does not require inspecting encrypted page contents is a simpler starting point. If you later choose interception, understand and configure the certificate trust change separately.
Body filtering can require buffering an entire document. Privoxy warns that this can expose the process to memory exhaustion if a server continues sending data indefinitely, so enable such filtering with that risk in mind. Privoxy configuration manual
Handle HTTPS and access control deliberately
With conventional HTTPS proxying, the client uses CONNECT to establish a tunnel. The proxy can relay the encrypted stream, but cannot inspect or rewrite its contents. mitmproxy interception works differently: its generated CA certificate must be installed and trusted on the client. That gives the proxy a position between TLS endpoints, so limit certificate installation to devices and users you intend to intercept. How mitmproxy works

Do not expose an unauthenticated proxy to networks or users you do not trust. Restrict access to intended clients and review the proxy’s access-control and security settings. Filtering rules can also block innocent page resources; adjust or bypass rules when they break a site rather than assuming every blocked request is junk. Privoxy configuration manual
Measure whether compression helps your setup
Compression can consume CPU time and add latency. Privoxy specifically says same-machine compression is likely to slow things down and recommends leaving it disabled unless measurement shows a benefit. There is no established universal bandwidth-savings percentage or speed improvement for this setup.
