If a phone with a SIM card gets wet, the safe sequence is to unplug everything, wipe off the outside, let the phone dry in a ventilated spot, and keep the SIM tray closed until the phone is completely dry. Only then should you remove the SIM to check it. Heat, compressed air, and rice are not part of that process, and on iPhone they are specifically cautioned against.

The guidance below is based on Apple’s published instructions for iPhone, which is the most specific official material available on this question. Other manufacturers use different tray designs and drying advice, so check your device maker’s instructions if your phone is not an iPhone.

What to do in the first few minutes

The first actions matter most, because a charging port or accessory connected to a wet phone is the most likely way to make the problem worse.

  1. Unplug all cables and accessories. Apple’s wet-phone guidance says that using accessories or charging a wet iPhone may damage it. The official wording is: “If your iPhone has been exposed to liquid, unplug all cables and do not charge your device until it’s completely dry.” (Apple Support, “About splash, water, and dust resistance of iPhone 7 and later”)
  2. Wipe the outside. Use a soft, lint-free cloth, such as a lens cloth, to remove visible liquid from the exterior. Do not push the cloth into the charging port, the SIM tray slot, or any other opening.
  3. Move the phone to a ventilated, dry area. Airflow at room temperature is the drying condition Apple describes. Keep the phone away from heaters, sunlight, and other direct heat sources.
  4. Wait before charging or connecting anything. Apple’s handling guidance for iPhone 7 and later says to allow at least five hours before charging or connecting an accessory. This is a manufacturer’s minimum for that device family after liquid exposure, not a universal drying time for every SIM card or phone.

Should you remove the SIM while the phone is wet?

No. Apple’s instruction is direct: “Make sure that your iPhone is dry before opening the SIM tray.” Opening the tray while moisture is still inside the phone can move water toward the internal components you are trying to protect.

Once the phone is completely dry, the tray can be released with a SIM eject tool or a straightened paperclip. iFixit’s iPhone liquid-damage repair guide describes this method for tray access (iFixit, “iPhone Liquid Damage Repair”). Removing the tray does not, by itself, show that the SIM or the phone is damaged. It is simply the point at which you can inspect the card and the tray for moisture.

Some regional iPhone models are eSIM-only and have no SIM tray at all, so there may be nothing to remove. Apple notes this in its liquid-indicator guidance, covered below.

Drying: what helps and what to avoid

Drying is about patience and airflow. Several common home remedies are either unsupported or specifically cautioned against by Apple.

  • Use ventilated, room-temperature air. This is the condition Apple’s wet-phone guidance describes. Leaving the phone in an open, dry space is the supported approach.
  • Do not apply external heat. Apple’s connector guidance says not to use an external heat source. That rules out hair dryers, heaters, ovens, and microwaves.
  • Do not use compressed air. Apple’s liquid-detection guidance advises against it. Forcing air into a port or tray can push moisture further in.
  • Do not put the phone in rice. Apple’s liquid-detection page says rice particles could damage the phone. Rice is not a supported drying method, and there is no Apple evidence that it helps a SIM or phone dry faster.
  • Do not insert objects into openings. Apple says not to insert foreign objects into the Lightning or USB-C connector. Cotton swabs and paper towels can leave fibres behind, so keep them out of every opening.

Signs that the phone or SIM still has a problem

A phone that looks dry can still have internal moisture. Watch for these symptoms after drying and before reconnecting power or inserting a SIM:

iSYFIX SIM Card Tray Eject Pin Removal Tool, 10 Pack
  • What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
  • Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
  • How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
  • The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
  • Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs
  • The SIM is not detected, or the carrier service does not register after the tray is reinserted.
  • The phone will not power on, will not charge normally, or shows unusual behaviour such as spontaneous restarts.
  • A liquid-detection alert appears. Apple’s guidance for this alert is on its liquid-detection alert page.
  • There is visible moisture or corrosion inside the SIM tray or the connector.

If any of these persist, stop troubleshooting at home and move to professional help. Repeated charging attempts on a phone with internal moisture can make a repair more expensive.

Liquid indicators and warranty coverage

Apple says many iPhones and most iPods built after 2006 contain Liquid Contact Indicators. An LCI is normally white or silver and turns fully red after contact with water or a water-containing liquid. A red LCI is evidence of liquid exposure, and it matters for warranty purposes. Apple also notes that some regional iPhone versions are eSIM-only and do not have a SIM tray or an externally visible LCI, so you cannot rely on the tray as a check in those models (Apple Support, “Water and other liquid damage to iPhone or iPod isn’t covered by warranty”).

According to the same Apple article, liquid damage is not covered by the One-Year Limited Warranty. Apple adds that consumer-law rights may still apply in some places. The coverage position is specific to Apple and to the location and terms that apply to your device, so check those before assuming a repair will be covered.

Phones other than iPhone

The step-by-step drying and tray guidance above is drawn from Apple’s iPhone instructions. Do not assume the same drying interval, tray design, or LCI system applies to Android phones, other manufacturers’ devices, or eSIM-only phones. Check the instructions published by your device maker before you open a tray or charge the phone.
