Rat King is a close-range Brawler in Deadlock, built to pressure enemies near the frontline and help nearby allies. His kit combines a repeated-damage grenade, a damage-over-time rat swarm, a bullet-deflecting barrier, and a team-supporting ultimate. There is no verified beginner item order in the available build references, so treat any purchases as match-dependent and start with the current in-game build browser.
Rat King’s abilities
The ability details and numbers below were reported in October 2026 sources and may change with patches. Confirm the current descriptions and values in-game before relying on exact timings or damage.
1. Scrap Grenade
Throw a scrap grenade that detonates repeatedly, dealing bullet damage and slowing enemies in its area. Enemies can knock the grenade away with a melee hit, so avoid treating it as a guaranteed hit. The October 3, 2026 guide lists 65 base damage per detonation, three detonations, an 8 m radius, a 20% movement slow, and a 26-second cooldown. 2. Rat Swarm
Rats attach to enemies and deal spirit damage over time while reducing their Bullet Resist with each bite. More attached rats bite faster, but the target can shake one off with a ground or air dash. The October 3 guide lists 8 damage and a 1% Bullet Resist reduction per bite, a one-second bite interval, and up to five attached rats. October 3 ability guide.

3. Royal Pestments
Gain a barrier based on Rat King’s maximum health. While it holds, bullets have a chance to return toward attackers. The patch notes specify that the barrier itself does not benefit from resists. The guide lists a base barrier equal to 15% of maximum health and a 15% bullet-return chance; check the live ability description for current values. October 2 patch notes; October 3 ability guide.
4. Rule, Ratannia!
Rat King charges and plants a banner. Nearby allies receive movement speed, slow immunity, and reduced incoming damage. The eruption damages and knocks enemies into the air, slows them, and sends rats that apply Rat Swarm. One guide lists a 24 m radius, 12-second banner duration, 20% damage reduction, and a 130-second cooldown. Patch-note summaries differ in how they describe the banner’s effects, so rely on the in-game text for exact effects and durations. October 2 patch notes; October 3 ability guide.
How to play Rat King as a beginner
Think of Rat King as a frontline pressure character who benefits from fighting where allies can support him. The following sequence is a practical reading of his ability descriptions, not a tested or statistically optimal combo.

- Pressure an area with Scrap Grenade. Throw it to slow a route or disrupt an enemy’s position. Remember that an opponent can melee it away.
- Apply Rat Swarm. Use it to keep pressure on a target and reduce Bullet Resist over time. Expect a target to dash to shake off a rat.
- Commit with Royal Pestments active. Its barrier can return bullets while it lasts, but its own strength does not benefit from resists.
- Use Rule, Ratannia! where allies can benefit. Look for a fight in which teammates can stay near the banner while the eruption catches enemies.
Choosing a beginner build
No optimal Rat King beginner purchase sequence is established by the consulted references. The Rat King hero page currently shows no popular item builds, and the Deadlock Database build overview explains Valve’s default-build format without supplying a supported Rat King beginner order.
- Open the current in-game build browser and look for a Rat King build that is maintained for the live patch.
- Use a listed build as a starting point, not a rule: learn what each purchase is intended to improve and adjust to the match.
- Prioritize understanding ability timing and how your purchases support the way you are playing; do not assume an unverified sequence is a proven best build.
The references do not support a data-driven comparison of Rat King builds by survival, weapon damage, ability utility, purchase timing, or ease of execution. Any specific item path beyond the in-game browser would be provisional rather than verified.

What is confirmed about Rat King’s launch-patch profile?
The October 2, 2026 patch notes reported Rat King as a Brawler with 800 base health, 6.8 maximum move speed, 0.263 stamina regeneration per second, and the Sovereign’s Decree weapon. The notes also described changes from prerelease values, including reduced effectiveness for Spirit and Bullet Lifesteal. These are launch-patch details, not guarantees about a later version.
