Day’Ron Sharpe is expected to have a larger role—and a starting opportunity—for Brooklyn in 2026–27 after playing behind Nic Claxton last season. The report, published by CBS Sports on October 1, 2026, says Sharpe is preparing for more responsibility; it does not establish a minutes target or guarantee that he will start all season.
Sharpe’s 2025–26 baseline
Sharpe averaged 8.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 18.7 minutes per game during 2025–26. He appeared in 62 games and started seven. Brooklyn also reported career highs in points, rebounds, assists and steals; his season line included 1.1 steals per game and 60.1% shooting.

Why a bigger role is available
Sharpe had been behind Nic Claxton, whom the NBA’s September 22, 2026 season preview says is now in Chicago. The preview presents Sharpe as a breakout candidate with a chance to show he can contribute beyond his previous 18-to-20-minute role. It also notes that his best role could still be backup center, so the opportunity is not a promise of a full-season starting job.

The preview offers encouraging on-off context across the prior three seasons: Brooklyn was plus-0.4 points per 100 possessions with Sharpe on the court and minus-9.0 per 100 during his off-court minutes. But the NBA cautions that much of the defensive difference came while he faced opposing reserves. How his impact translates against starters is therefore a key question as his responsibility grows.
The same preview notes that Sharpe was one of five players with at least 750 minutes and at least 15 points and 12 rebounds per 36 minutes in each of the previous three seasons. Those rate statistics show production in his minutes; they are not a projection of what he will produce as a starter.

How Sharpe says he will handle more minutes
In comments reported by Brian Lewis of the New York Post and carried by CBS Sports on October 1, Sharpe described pacing himself and limiting fouls as part of adjusting to a heavier workload:
“And even if it’s double the minutes, learn how to pace myself during the game, learning what opportunities to take [to avoid] getting in foul trouble, saving myself for later on in the game.”

He added: “But I’m just going to play hard until the wheels fall off. That’s all I can do.” The “double the minutes” wording is conditional, not an announced target. His comments describe his approach; they do not confirm a specific minutes limit or conditioning plan.

Brooklyn announced on March 12, 2026, that Sharpe had torn the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb, required surgery and would miss the rest of the 2025–26 season. The team said it would provide further updates after the procedure. The materials available here do not establish a current official medical-clearance statement, so a clearance date or a claim that the thumb will—or will not—affect the coming season cannot be stated.

What to watch as the role expands
- Minutes and assignment: His prior average was 18.7 minutes per game. The current reporting points to a larger workload and a starting opportunity, but Brooklyn has not announced an exact 2026–27 minutes projection.
- Matchups: The NBA preview’s reserve-opponent caveat makes his performance against starting centers an important test.
- Fouls and energy: Sharpe has identified foul avoidance, pacing and conserving energy as adjustments he intends to make.
- Production in a bigger role: His 2025–26 scoring, rebounding and assists provide a baseline; whether his finishing, rebounding and passing hold as his role changes remains to be seen.
