An anonymous function expression is a function written without a name; an arrow function is a shorter function syntax with different behavior, not just different punctuation. In this JavaScript lesson, you’ll learn to recognize both, convert a callback to an arrow, tell when an arrow returns a value implicitly, and use key-value properties in an object literal.
What is an anonymous function expression?
A function expression creates a function value. When it has no written name, it is anonymous:
const square = function (number) {
return number * number;
};
The function is stored in the square variable, so you can call it through that variable:
square(4); // 16
“Anonymous” describes how the function expression is written; it does not mean the function cannot be stored or called. A function expression can also have an internal name, which can help with self-reference and stack traces. Defining a function does not run its body; calling it does. See MDN’s Functions guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How do you convert a callback to arrow syntax?
A callback is a function passed to another function. For example, map calls its callback for each array item and uses each callback result to build a new array.
const lengths = words.map(function (item) {
return item.length;
});
The same callback can use arrow syntax:
const lengths = words.map((item) => item.length);
Because the arrow body is a single expression, its value is returned implicitly. Arrow functions are always anonymous, according to MDN’s Functions guide.

When does an arrow function return implicitly?
The shape of the body determines the return behavior. A concise expression body returns its expression’s value without a return keyword:
const add = (a, b) => a + b;
add(2, 3); // 5
If you use braces, the arrow has a block body. Write return when you want that block to produce a value:

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

const add = (a, b) => {
return a + b;
};
If execution reaches the end of a block body without a return, the function returns undefined. These rules are covered in MDN’s Arrow function expressions reference.
How do key-value pairs work in an object literal?
An object literal creates an object with properties. Each property pairs a key with a value:

const learner = {
name: "Ada",
day: 12
};
Here, name and day are keys, and "Ada" and 12 are their values. You can read a property with dot notation:
learner.name; // "Ada"
If an arrow function should return an object literal directly, wrap the object in parentheses:

Without the parentheses, JavaScript parses the braces after the arrow as a function block rather than an object to return. For more on objects, see MDN’s Working with objects guide.

Arrow functions are useful for concise callbacks, but they are not interchangeable with ordinary functions in every context. Their this, arguments, and constructor behavior differ.
| Feature | Anonymous function expression | Arrow function |
|---|---|---|
| Syntax and returns | Uses the function keyword; return a value with return. |
Uses =>; a concise expression body returns implicitly, while a block body needs return. |
this |
Determined by how the function is called. | Lexically inherited from the surrounding execution context; it does not get its own this. |
arguments |
Has its own arguments object. |
Has no own arguments; use rest parameters to collect arguments. |
| Constructor | Can be used as a constructor when otherwise valid, with new. |
Cannot be used as a constructor with new. |
Why does lexical this matter?
An arrow function uses the this value from the context where it is created, rather than receiving one from the call site. This can be useful when a callback inside a method should retain the method’s this. For an object method whose this should refer to the object on which the method is called, ordinary method syntax is generally appropriate:
const learner = {
name: "Ada",
introduce() {
return this.name;
}
};
MDN explains these distinctions in its arrow function reference.
How can an arrow function collect arguments?
Because an arrow has no own arguments, use a rest parameter when it needs to collect the arguments passed to it:
Quick Recap
const collect = (...items) => items;
collect("a", "b"); // ["a", "b"]
