Dawn of War IV has four headline factions: Space Marines (represented by the Blood Ravens), Orks, Necrons, and Adeptus Mechanicus. The Dark Angels are also playable in campaign missions, but they are a Space Marine sub-faction—not a fifth headline faction. Official information establishes each faction’s campaign role and says their gameplay is mechanically distinct; it does not yet provide enough detail for a reliable tactical or multiplayer tier list.
Which factions are in Dawn of War IV?
The game’s four headline factions are the Space Marines, Orks, Necrons, and Adeptus Mechanicus. The Space Marines are represented by the Blood Ravens, the returning chapter from earlier Dawn of War games. The Adeptus Mechanicus is a newcomer to the series. [Warhammer Community announcement]
The Dark Angels also appear as a playable force, but in a different category: they are a Space Marine sub-faction commanded during campaign missions. That distinction matters if you are counting the main factions or trying to choose a campaign. [Warhammer Community story announcement] [Warhammer Community Dark Angels trailer page]
How the factions compare
| Force | Roster status | Stated campaign role on Kronus |
|---|---|---|
| Blood Ravens / Space Marines | One of four headline factions | Captain Cyrus and his company must rebuild and defend their recruitment world, where the ability to receive reinforcements is part of the conflict. |
| Dark Angels | Playable Space Marine sub-faction in campaign missions; not a separate headline faction | Company Master Astoran and Chaplain Ezrael lead them as they reinforce the fight on Kronus. Official material characterizes them by precision, discipline, and experience in large-scale battles. |
| Orks | One of four headline factions | Two rival Warbosses compete to lead a major Waaagh across Kronus. |
| Necrons | One of four headline factions | An invasion fleet and forces from tombs beneath Kronus arrive; Chronomancer Thothmek is named in official material. |
| Adeptus Mechanicus | One of four headline factions; a series newcomer | They pursue lost knowledge and artifacts on Kronus. |
The story roles and named characters are described in Warhammer Community’s campaign announcement. The publisher’s FAQ says the game has four mechanically distinct factions, each with a unique campaign that feeds into one overarching narrative. [Dawn of War IV official FAQ]

What makes each faction distinct in the story?
Blood Ravens: defending their recruitment world
The Blood Ravens return as the Space Marine force. Their connection to Kronus is personal and strategic: it is their recruitment world, and the story puts the chapter’s ability to rebuild and receive reinforcements at stake.
Dark Angels: a campaign-playable Space Marine sub-faction
The Dark Angels descend to support the Blood Ravens. Warhammer Community describes them as bringing “ruthless precision and relentless discipline” to the battlefields of Kronus. This is an official description of their battlefield identity, not a published breakdown of specific RTS abilities or unit statistics. [Warhammer Community Dark Angels trailer page]

Orks: rival leaders chasing one Waaagh
The Ork campaign setup centers on two Warbosses competing for leadership of a large Waaagh. That gives the faction an internal contest within the wider struggle over Kronus; official material cited here does not specify how that rivalry translates into in-game economy or unit tactics.
Necrons: an invasion from above and below
The Necron presence combines an invading fleet with tombs under the planet’s surface. Chronomancer Thothmek is among the named characters. The narrative’s ancient and persistent force should not be mistaken for confirmation of particular mechanics such as resurrection rules or a specific resource system.

Adeptus Mechanicus: seeking artifacts and knowledge
The Adeptus Mechanicus enters the Dawn of War series as a main faction, with its campaign motive focused on lost knowledge and artifacts on Kronus. The official announcement establishes its place in the roster, but the sources cited here do not provide a comparable tactical profile.
Can you tell which faction is best to play?
Not from the available official information. The publisher confirms that the four headline factions are mechanically distinct, but the cited material does not give comparable detail on their economies, unit rosters, strengths, weaknesses, or multiplayer balance. That is not enough evidence to rank them or recommend a universal best choice.
