Romance scammers use dating apps to create a convincing connection, then exploit it to ask for money, personal information, or help moving funds. A polished profile or intense relationship does not prove someone is who they say they are. Watch for a pattern of avoiding verification, creating urgency, and asking you to act in secret or send money.
How dating app romance scams work
A common pattern begins with a profile on a dating app or site. The person may quickly move the conversation to email, phone, or a messaging service, then contact you often to build trust. They may claim that distance, overseas work, military service, or another obligation makes meeting impossible. Later, an urgent problem or investment opportunity becomes the reason to ask for money. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes this pattern in its romance scam guidance.
Moving off the app is not proof of a scam, but it can make it harder for the platform to observe or moderate the conversation. The FTC’s 2025 alert describes this as a common early step. Treat it as a reason to slow down, particularly if the person also resists video calls or other ordinary ways of confirming their identity.

No single clue proves that a profile is fraudulent. Pay attention to the overall pattern—especially when intimacy grows quickly while the person avoids independent verification or introduces financial pressure.

- They avoid meeting or video calls. They may repeatedly offer explanations for why they cannot meet, or cancel at the last moment.
- They push to leave the dating app. A request to switch to text, email, or another service may reduce the platform’s visibility into the exchange.
- They ask you to keep the relationship secret. Secrecy can prevent you from getting a second opinion from someone you trust.
- They create urgency. A sudden emergency, deadline, or limited-time investment opportunity may be used to discourage you from checking the story.
- They ask for money, financial details, or account access. Requests may involve a gift, a transfer, personal information, or help receiving or moving funds.
- They offer investment advice despite knowing you only online. A romantic connection can be used to steer someone toward a purported cryptocurrency or forex investment.
Common stories and what the scammer wants

For any story, ask what action is being requested, whether the person can be verified independently, and whether you would make the same decision if the relationship were not involved.
How to check a profile without putting yourself at risk
- Pause before responding to a request. Do not send money or gifts, share financial or sensitive personal information, or provide account access to someone you have not met in person. The FTC’s rule is direct: “Never send money or gifts to a sweetheart you haven’t met in person.”
- Get another perspective. Tell a trusted friend or family member what has happened. A person outside the relationship may spot pressure tactics that are harder to see when you are emotionally invested.
- Check the claims. Search the person’s claimed occupation or story together with the word “scammer.” Use a reverse-image search on their profile photo to see whether it appears elsewhere under a different name. These checks can reveal inconsistencies, but they cannot prove a person is genuine.
- Do not let them set the terms of verification. Be wary if they keep postponing a video call or meeting while asking for money, secrecy, or urgent action.
- Report and disengage if you suspect a scam. Report the profile through the dating app or social platform. The FTC advises: “Stop communicating with the person immediately.”
If you already sent money or shared information
Act quickly. Contact the bank, card issuer, gift card company, wire-transfer service, cryptocurrency exchange, or other payment provider involved. Explain that you believe the payment was part of a scam and ask whether it can be stopped or refunded. Recovery is not guaranteed, but the provider is the right first contact for a payment already made.

If you shared account credentials or financial information, contact the relevant institution promptly and follow its instructions to secure the account. Do not send more money to someone promising to recover the first payment; a further request can compound the loss.

- Federal Trade Commission: Submit a consumer fraud report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center: Report internet-enabled crime through IC3.
- Commodity Futures Trading Commission: For a pitch involving forex, commodities, or related investment fraud, use the CFTC complaint route. The CFTC also directs people to FBI reporting for internet crime.
What reported losses show—and what they do not
FTC figures illustrate the financial harm, but they are based on reports and do not count every incident. In 2024, the FTC reported $1.14 billion in romance-scam losses and a median reported loss of $2,000 per person. In a separate 2023 publication about 2022 reports, the FTC said nearly 70,000 consumers reported romance scams, with $1.3 billion in reported losses.
In the FTC’s 2023 analysis, among people who said they lost money to a romance scam in 2022, 40% said contact began on social media and 19% said it began on a website or app. Those percentages describe reported loss cases—not the share of dating-app users who encounter a scam. The FTC also reported that cryptocurrency and bank wires together accounted for more than 60% of reported 2022 romance-scam losses by payment method; that is a share of reported losses, not a share of victims.
