A useful developer vault does not need dozens of Dataview queries. Start with a few focused views for active projects, open work, recent changes, and missing metadata—and make each query match the fields and folder structure you actually use. Dataview indexes Markdown frontmatter and inline fields so an Obsidian vault can be queried like a database; its project documentation describes DQL as a pipeline-based query language and also provides a JavaScript API. Dataview project documentation.

Choose DQL for the job before writing a query

For ordinary lists, tables, calendars, filters, sorts, groups, and limits, use a dataview code block. A DQL query has an output type and can then specify a source and refinements. The official reference notes, “The Query Type is the only mandatory command in a query.” See Dataview’s query structure reference and query types.

Choose the smallest useful source and the fields that answer the question. A project dashboard, for example, usually needs a project link and a couple of status or date fields—not every property in the vault.

Build a small set of reusable developer-vault queries

These are adaptable templates, not guaranteed drop-in queries: change folder names and metadata fields to match your vault. Dataview cannot infer a field or folder convention that your notes do not use.

Active project dashboard

```dataview
TABLE file.link AS "Project", status, due
FROM "Projects"
WHERE status = "active"
SORT due ASC
```

Use this when project notes live under Projects and use a consistent status field. The table displays selected metadata beside links, while the source and filter keep the view focused.

Open project tasks

```dataview
TASK
FROM "Projects"
WHERE !completed
SORT due ASC
```

TASK returns task-level results rather than one row per page; checking a task in the result updates the original task in its file. Confirm which task fields your installed Dataview version exposes, and adjust the sort or filter to the metadata available in your vault.

Tasks due today or earlier, excluding missing dates

```dataview
TASK
FROM "Projects"
WHERE typeof(due) = "date" AND due <= date(today)
SORT due ASC
```

The date-type check is important. Dataview’s expression reference warns that a comparison such as due <= date(today) can unexpectedly match a task with no due value, because the missing value is null. Check for an actual date before comparing. See the expression reference.

Recently modified engineering notes

```dataview
TABLE file.link AS "Note", file.mtime AS "Modified", type, language
FROM "Engineering"
SORT file.mtime DESC
LIMIT 20
```

This view surfaces a bounded set of recent notes and their selected metadata. Replace type and language with fields you maintain, or remove them if they are not useful in this folder.

Project notes missing expected metadata

```dataview
TABLE WITHOUT ID file.link AS "Note", type, status
FROM "Projects"
WHERE !type OR !status
SORT file.name ASC
```

Use a cleanup view to spot project notes that lack fields your workflow expects. Check the result against your installed version and vault data before treating it as an automated lint rule; empty-field behavior and your conventions determine what it catches.

Reference notes grouped by language or technology

```dataview
TABLE rows.file.link AS "Notes"
FROM "Engineering/References"
GROUP BY language
SORT key ASC
```

Grouping creates one result per group, with grouped rows available through rows. Choose a field that is consistently populated; otherwise notes with absent or inconsistent values will not form the groups you expect.

Compact index of reference notes

```dataview
LIST file.mtime
FROM #reference
SORT file.mtime DESC
LIMIT 15
```

Use LIST when a compact link-oriented index is enough. Choose TABLE when several metadata columns matter; use TASK when you want task-level results. Dataview also offers CALENDAR for date-oriented page results. Output types are described in the query reference.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Keep query scope narrow

A source such as FROM "Projects" or FROM #reference limits the pages Dataview considers. Use a folder, tag, or link source when the task does not require the whole vault. The official query structure reference warns that broad queries can take a long time or, in extreme cases, freeze Obsidian, depending on vault size.

Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Scope is also a reliability aid: a project view that only scans project notes is easier to understand and less likely to pull in unrelated pages that happen to share a field name.

Know when to use inline DQL or DataviewJS

  • DQL blocks: Use for multi-page lists, tables, calendars, task views, and ordinary filtering or grouping.
  • Inline DQL: Use for one computed value in prose or a dashboard label. The reference describes inline DQL as producing one value, not a multi-page query. See Dataview query types.
  • DataviewJS: Use only when DQL cannot express the transformation or rendering you need. It requires JavaScript and has broader access; the Dataview project warns that JavaScript queries can potentially change files or make network requests. Only run code you trust. See the project documentation and API introduction.
  • Inline DataviewJS: Use for an inline computation that genuinely needs JavaScript, with the same trust caution as a DataviewJS block. See the query reference.

Diagnose empty or surprising results

  • Check the plugin: Verify that Dataview is enabled in Obsidian.
  • Check the source: Confirm the exact folder, tag, or link source exists and includes the notes you intend to query.
  • Check field names and values: Compare each field in the query with actual frontmatter or inline metadata. Field names, spelling, and value conventions must align.
  • Check date values: Confirm the due-date field contains a date of the expected type, and guard comparisons against missing values.
  • Check grouping assumptions: Make sure the field used for grouping is consistently populated.

For an example-oriented troubleshooting aid, Dataview Query Builder’s examples identify mismatched folder paths and field names as common reasons a query returns nothing.

Adapt the templates to your vault

  1. Pick a job: Decide whether you need a project overview, task review, recent-change list, reference index, or metadata cleanup.
  2. Set a narrow source: Choose the folder, tag, or link that contains the relevant notes.
  3. Match the schema: Replace sample fields such as status, due, type, and language with fields your notes actually use.
  4. Choose the output: Use a table for several fields, a list for a compact index, or a task query for individual tasks.
  5. Validate assumptions: Check dates, missing values, grouping fields, and task metadata against real notes before relying on the result.
