Datafaker 2.0 is a major release of the open-source JVM library for generating fake data. It requires Java 17 or newer, adds support for Java records and other data-generation features, and changes internet().url() to return a complete web URL instead of only a domain name.
What is Datafaker?
Datafaker is a library for generating fake data in JVM applications, commonly for test fixtures and sample data. It is a Maven dependency, not a boxed consumer product. Maven Central identifies the artifact as net.datafaker:datafaker:2.0.2 and lists the Apache License 2.0. See the Datafaker artifact on Maven Central.
What changed in Datafaker 2.0?
The project’s 2.0 release notes describe a broad update. These are project-reported changes, not independent performance benchmarks.
- Raised the minimum Java version to Java 17, enabling use of newer Java features including records.
- Added support for Java records, JSON lists, and annotations for data classes.
- Updated transformers and schemas.
- Added providers and locale data.
- Reported thread-safety improvements and removed deprecated code.
- Updated the documentation.
The release announcement is dated 11 June 2023. Read the Datafaker 2.0 release notes for the project’s full changelog.
Does Datafaker 2.0 require Java 17?
Yes. Datafaker 2.0 requires Java 17 or newer. The project says Java 17 was selected to support newer language features, including Java Records. If your application or build environment still targets an earlier Java version, check compatibility before upgrading; changing only the dependency version will not make an older runtime meet the requirement.
How do I add Datafaker to Maven?
The published Maven Central coordinates for version 2.0.2 are net.datafaker:datafaker:2.0.2. Add the dependency to your Maven project’s pom.xml:
Rank #2
<dependency>
<groupId>net.datafaker</groupId>
<artifactId>datafaker</artifactId>
<version>2.0.2</version>
</dependency>
Use the version managed by your project if it specifies one; the coordinates above identify the published 2.0.2 artifact, not a claim that it is the latest release.
Why does internet().url() return a full URL?
That output is an intentional behavior change in Datafaker 2.0. Earlier behavior returned only a domain name; 2.0 returns a complete web URL. Existing tests or fixtures that expect a bare domain may therefore fail or need adjustment. If a test only needs a host or domain, update it to extract or compare that part rather than relying on the old method output.

Is Datafaker 2.0 still current?
No: Datafaker continued receiving releases after 2.0. The project’s 2.2.0 announcement, dated 23 April 2024, reports additional providers and fixes. Consult the Datafaker 2.2.0 release page and the artifact listing when deciding which version to use. The 2.0 notes establish the changes in that major release; they do not establish the full feature set or compatibility requirements of later versions.
