Should you lower SQL Server fill factor to prevent page splits? Not automatically. A page split is a reason to investigate an index and its workload, not proof that a lower fill factor will improve performance. Microsoft says most workloads perform optimally with the default fill factor. Change it only when evidence shows splits are hurting performance and the index’s insert pattern is likely to use the space you reserve.

What a SQL Server page split shows

SQL Server stores data in 8-KiB database pages, according to Microsoft’s page and extent architecture guide. When a B-tree index page has no room for an inserted row, SQL Server adds a page and moves approximately half of the original page’s data to it. That is the structural event a page-split animation depicts.

The animation explains how the index makes room; it does not establish that every split is equally costly or that a split caused a measurable query slowdown. A split in the middle of an index can require substantial work and contribute to fragmentation, which can make read-ahead less effective during large scans. Whether those effects matter depends on the workload.

Why lowering fill factor is a tradeoff, not a fix

Fill factor sets how full SQL Server makes an index’s leaf-level pages when the index is created or rebuilt. A value of 80 leaves about 20 percent of each leaf page empty for potential growth. That space is distributed across the pages; it is not a reserve located only at the end of the index. The server-wide default value of 0 means full pages and is equivalent to 100.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Microsoft Learn says, “Most workloads perform optimally with the default fill factor (100 percent).” A lower value can reduce some future splits if new keys are inserted into the pages with reserved space, but the empty space carries an immediate cost: more storage, memory use, and disk I/O. Microsoft illustrates the tradeoff by noting that a fill factor of 50 doubles the disk I/O and memory required to read and cache the same amount of data. That is a documented illustration, not a benchmark that predicts every workload.

Lower page density also means more pages to read and cache, potentially increasing I/O, memory, CPU, and index-tree costs. Microsoft’s index-maintenance guidance notes that increasing page density can often have a greater positive performance impact than reducing fragmentation. Therefore, a lower split count alone is not enough to justify lowering fill factor; evaluate the read workload as well.

Check where new index keys land

Reserved space helps only when new rows can use it. If inserts arrive throughout the index’s key range, free space on those pages may delay splits. If new rows are added at the end—common with an increasing IDENTITY key—the reserved space on earlier pages may go unused while activity concentrates at the right edge.

  • Inserts across the key range: a lower fill factor may provide room on pages that receive new rows, but confirm that the reduction in costly splits is worth the extra read and storage costs.
  • Mostly right-edge inserts: lowering fill factor may not address the pages receiving the new rows. Diagnose the key and insertion pattern before changing the setting.

How to change SQL Server fill factor

SQL Server applies the setting when an index is created or rebuilt. Microsoft documents this rebuild syntax as an example:

ALTER INDEX index_name ON schema_name.table_name
REBUILD WITH (FILLFACTOR = 80);

The value 80 is illustrative, not a universal recommendation. Choose a value for a specific index only after assessing its insert distribution and the impact on both writes and reads. A rebuild with a lower fill factor creates more initial free space, but it does not make that space a shared pool for other pages.

Keep the engine’s defaults separate

Fill-factor advice is engine- and index-method-specific. PostgreSQL 18 documents a default B-tree fill factor of 90 and allows values from 10 to 100; its documentation says values from 50 to 90 may help smooth early-life splits for some indexes expecting many inserts or updates. That guidance concerns PostgreSQL B-tree indexes and should not be transferred to SQL Server, whose documented default and tradeoffs differ. See the PostgreSQL CREATE INDEX documentation.

A practical decision rule

  • Keep SQL Server’s default unless you have evidence that page splits are materially harming the workload.
  • Check whether inserts target pages throughout the key range or mainly the right edge.
  • If testing a lower fill factor, measure its effect on the relevant write and read behavior—not just the split count.
  • Use a lower value only when the index’s insertion pattern is likely to consume its per-page free space and the resulting read, memory, storage, and I/O costs are acceptable.

Microsoft’s fill-factor guidance also says database reads typically outnumber writes by a factor of five to ten, even for a write-intensive workload. Treat that as the rationale given in Microsoft’s documentation for considering read costs, not as a universal measurement for every database.
