Both fields use programming and problem solving, but their primary outputs, daily tasks, educational expectations, and labor-market profiles differ. The right choice depends on whether you prefer discovering meaning in data or building the digital experiences people use.
The core difference
Data scientists use analytical tools and techniques to extract meaningful insights from data, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes it. Web developers create and maintain websites. In practice, a data scientist may deliver a forecast, experiment analysis, machine-learning model, dashboard, or recommendation. A web developer may deliver a responsive interface, ecommerce feature, web application, database-backed service, or performance improvement.
| Aspect | Data science | Web development |
|---|---|---|
| Primary outcome | Findings, predictions, tested models, and recommendations | Working websites, interfaces, and web applications |
| Main question | What does the data show, and what may happen next? | How should this site or application work for users? |
| Typical emphasis | Statistics, data preparation, analysis, visualization, and model validation | Interface behavior, presentation, compatibility, integration, and performance |
| Common stakeholders | Business, research, product, operations, or policy teams | Designers, product teams, clients, users, and infrastructure teams |
These are areas of emphasis, not sealed categories. A data scientist may engineer production systems, while a web developer may build data-backed services and work extensively with databases.
What data scientists do
Find and prepare useful data
Data scientists identify relevant sources, collect data, clean inconsistent records, handle missing values, and decide whether the available data can support the question being asked.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Analyze and model
They apply statistical methods, develop or update algorithms and machine-learning models, test accuracy, and investigate whether results are reliable. Some specialize in machine learning or systems; others focus on research, analytics, or business strategy.
Explain results for decisions
Visualization and communication are part of the job, not optional presentation work. A data scientist must explain uncertainty, limitations, and practical implications to people who may not work with code or statistics every day.
What web developers do
Build the user-facing experience
Front-end work implements layouts, navigation, forms, interactions, and responsive behavior across browsers and devices. Developers consider usability, accessibility, compatibility, and how quickly pages respond.

Education and entry routes
Data science
BLS says data scientists typically need at least a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related field. Some employers require or prefer a master’s or doctoral degree, especially for advanced research or highly specialized work. A portfolio that analyzes a real dataset and clearly explains methods and uncertainty can help demonstrate practical ability, but it does not replace an employer’s stated credential requirements.
Web development
BLS reports requirements ranging from a high school diploma to a bachelor’s degree for web developers and digital designers. Some employers accept demonstrated ability through prior work or projects instead of a specific education credential. A small responsive site that is deployed, tested on multiple screen sizes, and documented is a useful way to explore the work and show implementation skills.
Textbooks covering statistics, programming, HTML, and JavaScript can support self-study, but buying a book is not a requirement for either career. Always compare an employer’s current requirements with your intended market.

U.S. pay and job outlook
The following are U.S. BLS occupation-level figures, not personal salary promises. They use May 2025 wage data and 2025–2035 employment projections; the profiles were last modified August 27, 2026.
| Occupation | Median annual pay (May 2025) | Projected growth (2025–2035) | Average openings per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data scientists | $120,230 | 35% | Approximately 24,800 |
| Web developers | $92,650 | 4% | Approximately 3,300 |
BLS characterizes data-scientist growth as much faster than average and web-development growth as faster than average. These categories are not perfectly equivalent, and individual outcomes vary with experience, industry, specialization, geography, and hiring conditions. Use local job postings to check which technologies, degrees, and portfolio evidence employers actually request.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between the paths
Choose data science if you prefer
- Working with uncertainty, evidence, and quantitative questions
- Cleaning and investigating imperfect datasets
- Statistics, experiments, visualization, and model evaluation
- Explaining what analysis means for a business, research, or policy decision
- A degree path centered on mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related field
Choose web development if you prefer
- Building something people can immediately use in a browser
- Designing interaction, layout, navigation, and responsive behavior
- Debugging application logic, APIs, databases, and performance issues
- Iterating visibly on a product or client requirement
- A flexible education route where projects may demonstrate ability for some employers
Test your preference with two small projects
- Data-science experiment: select a real dataset, clean it, analyze a meaningful question, visualize the result, and write a plain-language explanation that includes limitations.
- Web-development experiment: build and deploy a responsive site with navigation, a form or interactive feature, and a documented check across browsers and screen sizes.
Compare which activity kept your attention: forming and testing conclusions from data, or implementing and refining a usable product. Then inspect current openings in the country and region where you intend to work.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Can you move between them?
Yes. Shared programming, database, and problem-solving foundations make movement possible, but the gaps are real. A web developer moving toward data science will usually need deeper statistics, data analysis, and model validation. A data scientist moving toward web development will need stronger interface, application architecture, browser, deployment, and performance skills. Hybrid roles exist, especially in teams that build data products, dashboards, recommendation features, or analytics-heavy applications.
What matters most when deciding
Do not choose on salary figures alone. Start with the work product you want to create, the technical problems you enjoy, the education route you can pursue, and the requirements in your target market. Data science is generally more quantitative and credential-oriented; web development is generally more implementation-oriented and has a wider range of formal education requirements. Either can lead to a technical career, but success depends on sustained practice and evidence that matches the role.
