직접 연결 스토리지(Direct-Attached Storage, DAS)는 컴퓨터나 서버에 직접 연결해 사용하는 저장장치 구조입니다. USB 외장 드라이브가 대표적인 예이며, 서버에서는 SAS 같은 연결 방식으로 저장장치를 붙일 수도 있습니다. DAS는 저장장치의 종류나 속도 등급이 아니라 호스트와 저장장치가 연결되는 방식입니다.
DAS는 어떻게 작동하나요?
DAS 장치는 USB, Thunderbolt, eSATA 또는 서버용 SAS 같은 인터페이스를 통해 컴퓨터나 서버에 직접 연결됩니다. 일반적으로 연결된 호스트에서 장치의 저장 공간을 사용합니다. 장치와 호스트 양쪽에 호환되는 포트가 있어야 하며, 운영체제가 해당 장치를 지원하는지도 확인해야 합니다.
컴퓨터에 USB 외장 하드 드라이브를 꽂아 파일을 저장하는 상황이 전형적인 DAS 사용 사례입니다. 한 대의 컴퓨터에 저장 공간을 더하거나, 해당 컴퓨터에서 사용할 파일을 보관할 때 간편합니다.
DAS와 NAS, SAN은 어떻게 다른가요?

DAS의 장점과 한계는 무엇인가요?
장점
- 한 컴퓨터의 저장 공간을 늘리는 일이 단순하며, 네트워크 설정이 필요하지 않은 경우가 많습니다.
- 외장 USB 드라이브는 개인이나 소규모 사무실에서 로컬 저장 공간을 확장하거나 백업 대상으로 삼는 데 활용할 수 있습니다.
한계
- 직접 연결만으로 여러 기기의 파일 공유나 원격 접근이 제공되는 것은 아닙니다. 여러 기기에서 같은 파일을 사용해야 한다면 NAS가 구조적으로 더 적합할 수 있습니다.
- DAS라는 분류 자체가 중복성, 암호화, 백업 관리 기능을 보장하지 않습니다.
- DAS가 항상 NAS보다 빠르다고 단정할 수 없습니다. 실제 성능은 드라이브, 연결 인터페이스, 호스트와 작업에 따라 달라집니다.
저장 방식은 이름만 보고 고르기보다 접근 패턴, 처리량, 사용 빈도, 가용성 및 내구성 요구에 맞춰야 합니다. AWS Well-Architected Framework는 클라우드의 블록 스토리지를 각 가상 호스트에 제공되는 저장 방식으로 설명하며 DAS 또는 SAN에 비유합니다. 이는 AWS의 클라우드 스토리지 설명이지, 모든 물리 DAS의 성능이나 가용성을 보장하는 뜻은 아닙니다.
DAS를 고르기 전에 무엇을 확인해야 하나요?
- 연결 규격을 확인합니다. 저장장치와 호스트가 USB, Thunderbolt, eSATA 또는 SAS 등 실제로 같은 연결 규격을 지원하는지 확인하고, 운영체제 호환성도 살펴보세요.
- 누가 저장 공간에 접근할지 정합니다. 한 컴퓨터에서 주로 사용한다면 DAS가 간단할 수 있습니다. 여러 기기나 사용자의 네트워크 파일 공유가 목적이라면 NAS를 비교하세요.
- 필요한 장치 형태를 정합니다. 외장 드라이브 한 개면 충분한지, 여러 드라이브를 담는 DAS 인클로저가 필요한지 따져보세요. 용량, 베이 수, 운영체제 호환성은 제품별 사양으로 확인해야 합니다.
- 별도 백업과 복구 방법을 마련합니다. 연결된 드라이브 한 대는 데이터를 복사해 둘 수 있지만, 그 자체로 별도 보관이나 복구 계획을 대신하지 않습니다.
NAS에 DAS를 연결해 공유할 수 있나요?
가능한 제품별 구성이 있습니다. NAS가 연결된 DAS 장치와 해당 파일 시스템을 지원해야 하며, NAS의 사용 설명서에서 지원 여부와 설정 방법을 확인해야 합니다. Seagate NAS OS의 안내처럼, 일부 제품은 DAS를 분리하기 전에 안전하게 꺼내기(eject) 절차를 요구합니다. 절차를 확인하지 않고 케이블부터 뽑으면 안 됩니다.
