Dairy Queen is expanding a limited drive-thru voice-AI pilot to selected franchisees in Canada and the United States. The system, supplied by Presto Phoenix, is designed to take and confirm orders. Dairy Queen has not named the Canadian restaurants, and the test is not a chainwide rollout.
What Dairy Queen’s drive-thru AI does
Presto Phoenix supplies the voice-AI system. It is designed to take customers’ drive-thru orders, work with complex menus, read orders back for confirmation, and support consistent upselling. Dairy Queen says the aim is to speed service, improve order accuracy, and give employees more time for other tasks while maintaining a friendly guest experience.
The system is intended to handle the order itself, not merely greet customers. The available announcements do not explain how every order modification is handled or when a conversation is transferred to an employee.
Where the Canadian test is happening
Canada is included in the expansion, but Dairy Queen has not publicly identified the participating Canadian restaurants. MobileSyrup reported on April 17, 2026, that the planned expansion covered several dozen franchised locations in Canada and the U.S.; the exact Canadian sites were not disclosed.

The initial U.S. test began in 2025 at a handful of locations. Dairy Queen later moved from company-operated testing toward a phased expansion to selected franchisees. Restaurant Dive, citing a Presto spokesperson in 2026, reported that the first phase would reach at least 25 franchisees across at least 25 U.S. states and Canadian provinces.
How broad the rollout is—and is not
The franchisee expansion is a pilot, not confirmation that AI ordering is available at every Dairy Queen drive-thru. The long-term ambition cited by Presto is deployment across roughly 3,000 Dairy Queen drive-thrus in the U.S. and Canada. That is a stated goal, not a report of locations already converted.

Chain and location counts vary by geography and format. Restaurant Business described Dairy Queen as a 4,115-unit chain. Separately, Restaurant Dive’s reporting on 2025 U.S. franchise disclosures counted about 1,985 franchised Grill & Chill locations and 743 limited-menu Treats stores, plus two company-operated units. Those U.S. figures are not the same as the roughly 3,000 U.S. and Canadian drive-thrus cited as the pilot’s possible long-term reach.
What Dairy Queen has said about early results
Dairy Queen executive vice president of IT Kevin Baartman called the initial results “quite promising” and said the technology could help staff focus on higher-value tasks while delivering a friendly experience and high order accuracy. NACS reported that Dairy Queen cited double-digit improvements in customer-satisfaction scores during early tests. The company has also described faster service and larger orders through consistent upselling as goals.

The Independent reported approximately 90% order accuracy in the initial pilot. Treat that as an attributed figure, not independently audited performance: Restaurant Dive noted that Presto declined to provide more specific performance figures. The available reporting does not establish a detailed, independently verified comparison of accuracy or speed against human-only ordering.

Presto Phoenix is the supplier. Presto CEO Krishna Gupta said the companies were working on complex menu integrations and friendly voices, and described the goal as a “smooth human-AI waltz.” That is the vendor’s description of the development effort, not an independent assessment of how the system performs in every restaurant.
