Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCypress lets you write browser tests that exercise a web application and check what users can see and do. Use an end-to-end (E2E) test to verify a flow through your app; use Component Testing to mount and test a single component in a real browser. You can install Cypress locally and run your first test without paying for Cypress Cloud.
Choose the kind of test you need
| Test type | Scope and setup | Useful for finding |
|---|---|---|
| E2E | Visits the application and performs UI actions along a user-facing flow. | Failures in a journey that depends on multiple parts of the application working together. |
| Component | Mounts a component in a real browser, isolated from the full application flow. | Problems with a component’s behavior, style, or appearance. |
These tests answer different questions rather than serving as interchangeable versions of the same test. Start with E2E when you need confidence in a meaningful journey, such as searching for an item and viewing results. Start with Component Testing when you want to focus on one component’s rendering or interaction. Cypress’s official overview of Cypress and its test types explains the distinction.
Install Cypress in your project
Cypress is installed as a local development dependency. You need Node.js and a supported package manager. The commands below use npm; Cypress also documents Yarn, pnpm, and Bun installation options. Check the live installation and system requirements for current operating-system, Node.js, and browser compatibility before setting up a project.

Install Cypress:
npm install cypress --save-dev -
Open the Cypress App:
npx cypress open -
In the app, choose E2E Testing or Component Testing and follow the prompts to create the initial configuration and example files. For a first user-flow test, select E2E.
The local Cypress App is free and open source. Cypress Cloud is a separate paid service for recording test runs and viewing results and analytics; it is not necessary to write or run a first test locally. Cloud plans and prices can change, so consult the current Cypress pricing page if you are evaluating that service.
Write and run a first E2E test
Use a page in your application that is already available locally or in a test environment. The example below follows Cypress’s documented interaction pattern: visit a page, type into an input, click a button, and assert that the resulting heading contains the expected text. Replace the example URL, selectors, and expected heading with values from your app.

describe('search', () => {
it('shows results for a query', () => {
cy.visit('http://localhost:3000')
cy.get('input[name="q"]').type('Cypress testing')
cy.get('button[type="submit"]').click()
cy.get('h1').should('contain', 'Search results')
})
})
Save this as a spec file in the default E2E test directory, for example cypress/e2e/search.cy.js. Make sure your application is running at the URL used by cy.visit(). In the Cypress App, select the spec to run it in a browser.
What each command does
describe()groups related tests under a readable name;it()defines one test case. Cypress uses a Mocha-style interface, which also supportscontext()andspecify().cy.visit()opens the application page in the test browser.cy.get()locates an element using a CSS selector..type()enters text into the selected input, and.click()clicks the selected button..should('contain', 'Search results')checks that the selected heading contains the expected text. If the assertion does not become true, the test fails.
Cypress’s official introduction includes this basic pattern and more detail on how Cypress commands and assertions work.
Know where tests and shared setup live
- E2E specs: The default location is
cypress/e2e. Cypress discovers spec files there using the configured pattern. - Component specs: These can live alongside the components they test, which keeps focused tests close to their code.
- Support file: A support file runs before each spec and is a suitable place for shared setup and custom commands.
These are useful defaults, not fixed rules; Cypress configuration can change them. See Cypress’s test organization guide for the current conventions and configuration details.

When to try Component Testing
Component Testing mounts the actual component in a real browser, allowing you to exercise its behavior and inspect its rendering without running a complete user journey through the application. Cypress documents mounting libraries for React, Angular, Vue, and Svelte. Supported framework versions and bundler combinations evolve, so check the current Component Testing setup guide before choosing a configuration.
Select a browser and run mode deliberately
Cypress can launch browsers in headed mode, where you can watch the test, or headless mode, which is often used for automated runs. Its current browser documentation lists Chrome-family browsers and Firefox, describes WebKit as experimental, and marks Electron as deprecated as a test browser. Those categories are not equivalent guarantees of stability. Check the live browser launch reference for current support and browser selection options before relying on a particular browser.

npx cypress run --browser chrome
Browser names and availability depend on the installed browser and current Cypress support. Consult the browser reference if the command cannot find your chosen browser.
Troubleshoot common first-test failures
- Cypress will not install or launch: Confirm that Node.js and your package manager meet the current requirements. Use the installation guide’s live compatibility details rather than assuming every operating system or runtime version is supported.
- The test cannot visit the page: Check that the application is running, the URL and port in
cy.visit()are correct, and the test environment is reachable from the browser Cypress launched. - An element is not found: Inspect the page and verify the selector matches an element that is present. Check for spelling errors and whether the element appears only after another action or page load.
- The assertion fails: Confirm that the application produces the expected visible text for the test input. A failed assertion may indicate an incorrect expectation or a real application problem.
- A browser option fails to launch: Verify that the browser is installed and recognized by Cypress, and check the current browser reference for its support status.
- Component setup does not match your app: Check the current framework, version, and bundler compatibility in Cypress’s Component Testing setup guide.
