When a Cypress screenshot is missing from CI, check two separate things: whether Cypress created the file on the runner, and whether your workflow uploaded it as an artifact. Cypress normally takes automatic screenshots for failed tests during cypress run; it does not automatically take failure screenshots during cypress open, and passing tests do not trigger them.

Diagnose the missing screenshot

  1. Confirm the command and test outcome. Automatic failure screenshots are associated with cypress run. If you ran cypress open, or the test passed, an automatic failure screenshot is not expected. To take one deliberately, call cy.screenshot() in the test.
  2. Check the screenshot settings. The default screenshotOnRunFailure value is true, and the default screenshotsFolder is cypress/screenshots. Look in the project configuration and any runtime overrides; then inspect that configured directory on the CI runner. If failure screenshots were disabled, turn the setting back on.
  3. Check whether Cypress cleared the directory. By default, trashAssetsBeforeRuns is true, so Cypress clears the configured screenshots folder before a cypress run. Do not expect files from an earlier run to remain there. Set it to false only if retaining earlier files is intentional.
  4. Separate file creation from artifact upload. A file in the runner’s workspace is not automatically downloadable from the CI interface. The workflow needs an upload step after Cypress runs, and its path must match the configured screenshotsFolder.
  5. Read the upload step’s result. In GitHub Actions, check for a no-files-found message, verify that any failure-only condition was met, and look for the artifact in the workflow run’s artifact area. A no-files-found result can point to a wrong path, a missing screenshot, or an upload step that ran before Cypress finished.
  6. Investigate a CI-only test failure separately. Once you have the run evidence, compare the CI and local environments to find why the test failed. Missing evidence is an artifact-generation or retention problem; it does not explain the underlying test failure.

Upload screenshots in GitHub Actions

Place the upload step after the Cypress run. This example follows the Cypress-maintained GitHub Action repository’s pattern. The path assumes the default screenshotsFolder; change it if your Cypress configuration uses another directory.

- name: Cypress run
  uses: cypress-io/github-action@v7

- name: Upload screenshots
if: failure() # Optional: upload only when the preceding job steps have failed
  uses: actions/upload-artifact@v7
  with:
    name: cypress-screenshots
    path: cypress/screenshots
    if-no-files-found: warn

The if: failure() condition is optional: keep it when you want to upload only after a preceding step fails, or remove it if you want the upload step to run regardless. The Cypress example uses if-no-files-found: ignore; warn is the upload action’s documented default and makes a path mismatch more visible than silently ignoring it. Choose a unique artifact name when separate matrix jobs upload independently. Check that the action versions are supported by your repository and runner when you implement the workflow.

Adapt the fix to another CI provider

Cypress supports CI providers including CircleCI, GitLab CI, Jenkins, and AWS CodeBuild. The principle is the same: retain the runner’s screenshot directory using that provider’s artifact mechanism, after the files have been written. The GitHub Actions YAML above is provider-specific; use your CI provider’s current official artifact documentation for its own syntax.

When Cypress Cloud may help

If the run is recorded and your project is configured to use Cypress Cloud, you can view screenshots from a CI run there. Test Replay can add execution context beyond a static image. These options depend on the relevant Cloud setup; they do not upload files to your provider’s artifact store or replace checking the runner’s local output when that is your intended workflow.
