Cypress can capture a page with cy.screenshot(), but that command does not compare the image with an earlier run. For visual regression testing, capture a stable application state and add an integration that stores approved baselines, detects differences, and lets your team review and accept intentional changes.
What Cypress screenshots do—and do not do
Cypress’s built-in cy.screenshot() saves an image. It does not perform visual comparison. To detect page changes, use a visual-testing integration or plugin alongside Cypress; Cypress provides the test runner and the integration supplies baseline comparison and review. Cypress screenshot documentation and its visual-testing guide describe this distinction.
A typical visual-regression workflow is to drive the app to a meaningful state, capture it, compare the result with an approved baseline, inspect the difference, and approve a new baseline when the change is intentional. The comparison tool determines its own threshold or pass/fail rules.

Save a screenshot at a known point in a test
Call cy.screenshot() after the page has rendered the state you want to inspect:

describe('article page', () => {
it('captures the rendered article', () => {
cy.visit('/articles/example')
cy.get('h1').should('be.visible').and('contain', 'Example')
cy.screenshot('article-page')
})
})
The command can be used in interactive cypress open and headless cypress run, including CI. You can also call it on a command yielding one DOM element, such as cy.get('.post').screenshot(). The default screenshot directory is cypress/screenshots; configure it with screenshotsFolder.
Use failure screenshots deliberately
During cypress run, Cypress automatically captures screenshots when tests fail. It does not automatically take failure screenshots during cypress open. Set screenshotOnRunFailure: false in Cypress configuration to disable automatic failure captures during a run. Manual calls to cy.screenshot() are separate from that setting.
Full-page and element captures
A full-page screenshot scrolls from top to bottom and stitches captures together. Fixed or sticky elements may appear more than once because they remain visible as the page is scrolled. Element screenshots can help isolate a component when the question is about that component rather than the overall page layout.
Screenshot capture is asynchronous. Cypress documents that it takes around 100 ms, so the application may change before the capture completes. Assert that the expected state is present before capturing, and avoid triggering state changes at the same time as a screenshot.

Build a reliable visual-regression test
Stabilize the page before capture
- Wait for the expected state: use a functional assertion, such as an expected heading or loaded component, before taking the screenshot. Avoid arbitrary sleeps when an observable condition is available.
- Control changing data: use
cy.intercept()to stub a changing response with a fixture, then wait for that response before capturing. A page backed by changing production-like data can produce noisy differences. - Keep rendering conditions consistent: browser version, operating system, display scaling, fonts, and viewport can affect pixels. Use a consistent environment for baseline creation and subsequent runs.
- Account for motion: Cypress action options such as
waitForAnimationsandanimationDistanceThresholdaffect action commands; they do not stop an unrelated animation from being captured mid-motion. Disable or wait out page animations when they make results inconsistent. - Limit dynamic exclusions: if the selected comparison tool supports masking or hiding, use it for genuinely uncontrollable content such as ads or third-party widgets. Exclude a small region rather than weakening comparison for the whole page.
Choose snapshot coverage that helps diagnose changes
Capture important user-facing states, shared components, and key pages instead of adding a screenshot to every test by default. Component testing can narrow the rendering surface and keep data controlled, which can make a difference easier to attribute. Use element-level comparisons when a component is the subject; use full-page captures when overall layout is what matters.
Choose a Cypress visual-testing integration
Cypress documents commercial services and integrations, while its maintained plugin directory also lists community and local options. They differ in where rendering and comparison happen, browser coverage, capture granularity, masking controls, baseline approval, and Cypress-version support. These are selection criteria, not a universal ranking; verify current features, pricing, and compatibility in vendor documentation before adopting one.

Questions to ask before choosing
- Does it render locally or in a hosted service, and where will test content be processed?
- Which browsers, viewport widths, full-page captures, and element or component snapshots does it support?
- How are baseline changes reviewed and approved? Can CI or pull requests show the diff?
- Can you ignore or mask a specific region without relaxing the whole comparison?
- Does it support both your Cypress end-to-end and component tests?
- Does its current release support your Cypress version?
Cypress Cloud is adjacent rather than interchangeable: its product page describes recorded test runs, artifacts, collaboration, UI coverage, and related CI features. That page does not establish Cloud as the baseline-comparison tool. See Cypress Cloud for the Cloud product description.

The screenshot is blank or shows an earlier-looking state
Confirm that the expected page content is rendered before capture with an assertion, and check whether the app changes state immediately afterward. Because screenshot capture is asynchronous, the saved image may reflect a slightly later state than the moment the command was issued.
The same page produces diffs on every run
Compare the test environment, browser version, viewport, fonts, and display scaling with the baseline environment. Then stabilize API responses and wait for the exact content to render. If animation is involved, control the animation itself; action-command animation settings do not freeze unrelated page motion.

Sticky navigation or banners appear multiple times
This can happen in a full-page capture because Cypress scrolls and stitches the page. If the visual question is limited to one region, capture an element or use the comparison tool’s region controls where available.
No automatic failure screenshot appears
Automatic failure screenshots are taken during cypress run, not during interactive cypress open. Check whether screenshotOnRunFailure is set to false and whether the test was run headlessly.
A plugin fails to install or run with your Cypress version
Check the package’s current compatibility range and its documented setup steps against your installed Cypress release. Directory metadata can age quickly, so do not rely on an older compatibility listing as proof that a release remains supported.

If you need a clean image of a live page rather than a Cypress baseline comparison, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it does not replace a visual-regression service’s baseline review workflow.
For example, using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Cypress compare screenshots by itself?
No. cy.screenshot() captures an image; baseline comparison requires a visual-testing integration or plugin.
Can I capture only one element instead of a whole page?
Yes. Call .screenshot() on a Cypress command that yields a single DOM element, for example cy.get('.post').screenshot().
