To create a Cypress HTML report that includes screenshots, configure a compatible reporter to save a JSON report for each spec, merge those files, and render the merged result as HTML. Cypress captures failure screenshots automatically during cypress run and saves them separately; the report workflow and screenshot workflow are related, but they are not the same thing.
Choose the right kind of Cypress report
Cypress uses Mocha and supports Mocha-compatible and custom reporters. Its default spec reporter writes results to the terminal; Cypress also bundles teamcity and junit. Cypress does not require one particular HTML reporter. The appropriate choice depends on whether you need a static HTML file, machine-readable results for CI, a report aggregated across specs, or a hosted view.
- Test execution report: shows test outcomes and related details. Mochawesome is one route to a standalone HTML report.
- Coverage report: summarizes which application code tests exercised. Cypress coverage tooling can generate HTML coverage output, but that is different from an HTML report of test results.
- CI or hosted results: Cypress Cloud or a CI provider’s artifact interface can expose run output without requiring one locally generated, combined HTML file.
For a single report spanning several specs, the documented Mochawesome pattern is the clearest: write non-overwriting JSON files per spec, merge them, then render the merged JSON. A fixed output file can be replaced as each spec runs, leaving only the last spec’s results; unique per-spec files avoid that failure mode.
Generate one Mochawesome HTML report across specs
The following workflow follows Cypress’s documented Mochawesome approach. Install the packages as development dependencies in the project that runs Cypress:

Set the reporter and options in cypress.config.js (or adapt the configuration to the format your project already uses). This example writes JSON, not per-spec HTML, so the files can be combined before rendering:

});Use a results folder distinct from cypress/screenshots: the former holds reporter output, while Cypress’s default screenshot folder holds image files. With overwrite: false, multiple specs can produce separate JSON files rather than clobbering one another.
Run tests, merge JSON, and render HTML
From the project root, run the test suite and then the merge and report-generation commands:

The JSON merge step is what makes a run across multiple specs produce one combined report rather than a report that only reflects the last spec. Confirm command options against the installed package documentation when upgrading dependencies, because package behavior and flags can change.

Keep the run repeatable
Make sure the merge command runs only after Cypress has completed and written its JSON files. In CI, use shell behavior appropriate to the runner and fail the job if Cypress fails without accidentally skipping artifact-generation steps you need. If an empty or stale report appears, first check that the reporter wrote fresh files under cypress/results and that the merge glob matches those files. Avoid merging the prior run’s JSON by clearing generated output before a new run where appropriate.
Make sure Cypress captures the screenshots
In cypress run, Cypress automatically takes a screenshot when a test fails. This automatic failure capture does not occur in cypress open. The default location is cypress/screenshots; set screenshotsFolder in Cypress configuration if your project needs another location. You can disable automatic failure screenshots with screenshotOnRunFailure: false.
For a deliberate capture during a test, use cy.screenshot() in either cypress open or cypress run. For example:

});The screenshot command can capture the application or an element and can save an image under a chosen name. See Cypress’s screenshot command API for the available arguments and options. Screenshots are asynchronous and take around 100 ms; the page can change before capture finishes. Therefore a failure image may not show the exact state at the instant the earlier command failed.

Protect sensitive content in images
Failure screenshots may contain account details, tokens, personal information, or other sensitive page content. Cypress screenshot defaults can adjust capture behavior, including blackout selectors. Choose those settings deliberately, and account for who can access CI artifacts or hosted results before retaining screenshots from non-test data.
Choose an alternative reporter when the workflow differs
The standard Mochawesome merge approach is useful when you want a static combined HTML artifact. Other community options may fit different priorities, but their setup, output, compatibility, and aggregation behavior should be checked against the current package documentation rather than assumed to match Mochawesome.

View screenshots and reports in CI
Cypress says screenshots taken during a run can be viewed in Cypress Cloud without extra work. Alternatively, CI providers document how to export screenshots as job artifacts. A locally generated Mochawesome file is another option when you need a static report artifact. These approaches solve related but different access needs: Cloud gives a hosted test-results view, a provider artifact makes files available through that CI system, and the merged HTML file can be downloaded or published wherever your team stores build output.

Cypress’s organizing guide notes that generated screenshot and video folders are generally regenerated on each run and commonly kept out of source control. Keep generated evidence as CI artifacts or in the hosted service if you need it after a run; do not assume a particular retention duration for Cypress Cloud, since it depends on current service terms.
Troubleshoot missing or incomplete output
- No automatic failure screenshot: confirm the test ran under
cypress run, not onlycypress open, and check thatscreenshotOnRunFailurehas not been set tofalse. - Screenshot saved somewhere unexpected: inspect
screenshotsFolderin the Cypress configuration and look for output in that configured directory. - Combined report contains only one spec: check that reporter output uses
overwrite: false, that each spec writes its own JSON, and that the merge command includes all those files. - No merged report or an empty report: confirm the run finished before merging, the output directory contains fresh JSON, and the shell glob points at the correct directory. Run the merge and render commands separately to identify which stage fails.
- Report exists but lacks expected screenshot evidence: verify that Cypress produced screenshots and that the reporter or report format in use includes or references them. A test-results HTML report and Cypress’s screenshot files are not automatically the same artifact.
- Screenshot looks later than the failure: this can happen because capture is asynchronous. Treat the image as failure evidence, not necessarily a frame captured at the precise instant of the failed command.
- Unexpected data is visible: review blackout selectors and artifact access controls, then adjust capture and retention settings before sharing the report.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Generating a combined static report adds a merge and rendering stage after test execution. Ensure CI runs it after Cypress writes per-spec JSON, and preserve the JSON and screenshots if they are useful for diagnosing report-generation failures. Screenshot capture itself is asynchronous; adding deliberate screenshots within tests can also add work to the run, so capture only the states that help diagnose or document behavior.
For reliability, keep the raw machine-readable output when downstream systems need it, and do not rely on a single fixed per-spec filename for a multi-spec run. Decide separately where HTML, screenshots, and videos should be stored, who can view them, and how long the artifacts should remain available. The cited Cypress documentation does not establish one universal Cloud retention duration or one CI artifact retention policy; check the terms for the service and plan you use.
