To reduce the memory required for stream analytics, replace only the exact state you do not need to keep: use HyperLogLog (HLL) to estimate how many distinct values appeared, and Count-Min Sketch (CMS) to estimate how often a particular value appeared. Neither structure is a general-purpose replacement for stored records, and neither provides a universal memory saving. Measure your implementation’s full Node.js process footprint and validate its accuracy, speed, and operational fit before relying on it.
Choose the sketch that matches the question
HLL and CMS summarize different properties of a stream. Using the wrong one does not merely change precision; it answers a different question.
| Question | Structure | What a query means | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| How many unique users, IDs, or keys appeared? | HyperLogLog | An estimate of distinct-value cardinality | Compact retained state for a chosen implementation and configuration, with statistical estimation error. |
| How many times did a particular key appear? | Count-Min Sketch | An estimate of that key’s frequency | Table width and depth trade memory against error and confidence; in the standard nonnegative setting, collisions can overstate counts. |
| How many distinct values appeared, and what is the estimated frequency of selected values? | Both | Two separate estimates | The structures retain separate state, so memory costs add. Keep both only if both questions matter. |
Use HLL for unique counts
HLL estimates the number of distinct elements without retaining the full set. Redis describes its implementation as using up to 12 KB with a standard error of 0.81%; those figures apply to Redis, not to every HLL or TypeScript package. The original HLL paper gives a typical relative standard error of about 1.04/√m, where m is the number of registers, under the paper’s analysis. These figures have different implementation and parameter contexts; do not treat them as interchangeable or as guarantees for your code. See Redis HyperLogLog documentation and the 2007 HyperLogLog paper.
Use CMS for estimated frequencies
CMS is suited to questions such as “how often did this event key appear?” It maintains a table of counters updated by hashes rather than a record for every occurrence. Its width and depth determine the memory/error/confidence trade-off. Do not promise a numerical error bound unless you have checked the particular variant’s assumptions, hash behavior, parameters, and update model. Redis’s Count-Min Sketch explainer discusses the trade-offs.

Keep exact state when exact answers matter
Sketches summarize information: they cannot generally recover original records or answer arbitrary questions about them. Keep an exact store, or use another design, when your product requires exact counts, deletions, auditability, or downstream drill-down. Approximation is appropriate only when the resulting uncertainty is acceptable for the decision being made.
Decide whether approximation is acceptable
Before changing a data structure, write down the actual query and the consequence of an inaccurate answer. A distinct-user dashboard may tolerate an estimate; billing, compliance, or a workflow that triggers action on an exact threshold may not. Frequency estimates may be useful for surfacing likely popular keys, but a collision-driven overestimate can affect rankings or alerts.

- Retain a source of exact data if approximate state cannot satisfy recovery, audit, or investigation needs.
Plan the TypeScript implementation deliberately
A fixed-configuration HLL is designed to keep compact state as a stream grows, but actual bytes depend on its implementation and configuration. A CMS’s table dimensions directly affect its retained counters. JavaScript object layout, hashing, typed-array choice, and runtime behavior also matter, so do not assume a package’s state size or accuracy from a different implementation.
Choose representation and validate counters
A typed array can be a sensible representation for dense numeric registers or counters and may avoid per-counter object overhead. That is an engineering hypothesis to benchmark, not a demonstrated saving for every Node.js workload. Check that the chosen element width can represent the full valid range without overflow; verify signed versus unsigned behavior and validate parameters before accepting updates.

Make hashing and compatibility explicit
Review hash quality and the algorithm assumptions required by the chosen implementation. If sketches will be merged, require matching dimensions or precision, hash behavior, and serialization versions. Reject incompatible sketches rather than merging silently. Include these parameters in persisted metadata so deployments can detect incompatible state.
Check the package against your needs
A recent SitePoint TypeScript tutorial covers both structures, but it is secondary implementation guidance rather than an official Node.js or algorithm specification. Inspect sample code and package behavior for parameter validation, counter overflow, serialization compatibility, merge preconditions, and the precise CMS variant before adopting it.

Measure heap and total process memory in Node.js
process.memoryUsage() returns byte counts for several different parts of the process. heapUsed and heapTotal describe V8 heap use; external covers memory used by C++ objects bound to JavaScript objects; arrayBuffers includes ArrayBuffer, SharedArrayBuffer, and Node.js Buffer allocations and is also included in external. rss is resident memory for the process, including native and JavaScript objects and code. See the Node.js v26.10.0 process memory documentation.
const memory = process.memoryUsage();
console.log({
heapUsedMiB: memory.heapUsed / 1024 / 1024,
heapTotalMiB: memory.heapTotal / 1024 / 1024,
externalMiB: memory.external / 1024 / 1024,
arrayBuffersMiB: memory.arrayBuffers / 1024 / 1024,
rssMiB: memory.rss / 1024 / 1024,
});
These conversions report MiB from the byte values returned by Node. Do not add external and arrayBuffers as though they were independent totals: array-buffer memory is already included in external. The full process.memoryUsage() call may be slow because it walks memory pages; avoid polling it excessively. If you need only RSS, Node also documents process.memoryUsage.rss() as a faster RSS-only method.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
On Linux with glibc, Node documents that allocator fragmentation can cause RSS to keep rising even when heapTotal stays stable. A stable V8 heap alone therefore does not establish that total process memory is stable, nor that a data structure is leaking.
Benchmark the memory trade-off you will ship
No measured TypeScript memory reduction is established here. Compare the implementation you plan to deploy against an exact baseline on the same workload; report results as measurements, not as a general property of HLL, CMS, or TypeScript.
- Hold the environment constant. Use the same Node.js version, machine or container limits, input stream, key normalization, and query pattern for the exact baseline and each sketch.
- Record the sketch configuration. Specify HLL precision or register count; CMS dimensions and hash functions; package and implementation version; and whether warm-up, merging, or serialization is included.
- Describe the workload. Report stream length and distinct cardinality or frequency distribution, as relevant. Keep the distribution and query mix consistent across comparisons.
- Capture memory over time. Sample RSS, heap, external, and array-buffer memory before, during, and after processing. Report units and both peak and settled measurements, and explain how garbage collection was handled.
- Measure performance and isolate retained state. Record throughput and update/query latency alongside memory. Separate sketch state from input buffers, queues, caches, and the rest of the process.
- Repeat before claiming a saving. Use repeatable runs and report only the results your measurements support; a compact sketch that misses latency or accuracy requirements is not a suitable replacement.
For a fair comparison, define whether the goal is lower peak process memory, lower settled memory after processing, or less retained state as stream length grows. Those are different outcomes and may lead to different conclusions.
