Where does the money actually go when I use Claude Code? First, identify how you authenticate: Claude Code can use Anthropic Console/API billing, a Claude Pro or Max subscription, or an enterprise platform such as Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI. For API usage, the bill depends on the model and the tokens used across the whole agentic task—not just the final answer. Anthropic says API use is the default, but your own setup determines which billing route applies.

Which Claude Code billing route are you using?

Anthropic’s Claude Code setup guide says, “By default, Claude Code uses Anthropic’s API.” It also documents authentication through a Claude Pro or Max subscription and enterprise-platform options including Amazon Bedrock and Google Vertex AI. Those routes are not interchangeable: where usage is billed and which rates apply depend on the configured account or platform. Check your authentication and billing configuration before treating a Claude Code charge as a direct API token bill.

For API billing, what makes the cost add up?

Anthropic’s pricing documentation organizes API charges by model and usage category. A useful way to understand an API bill is as the sum of usage across requests and turns, rather than a flat cost for one prompt.

  • Model: Different models have different rates, so selecting one affects the price of its usage.
  • Input and output tokens: The tokens sent to the model and those it generates are separate billing categories.
  • Prompt-cache activity: Cache creation and cache reads are tracked as distinct categories in the pricing documentation.
  • Tools and features: Tool descriptions, calls, and returned results can contribute tokens. Some server-side tools may also have separate usage-based charges.
  • Long context: The pricing guide describes long-context pricing for particular models and conditions. Applicability depends on the active model and current documentation.

Claude Code can make multiple model turns while it reads files, uses tools, receives results, and continues working. That means a task may use more than the tokens in the visible final response. The sources do not establish a typical multiplier, average task cost, or percentage breakdown among these categories, so those figures should not be assumed.

How can you reduce or control Claude Code API costs?

Choose a model for the task

The CLI reference documents --model as a way to choose a model alias or full model name. Match the choice to the task’s quality needs, then verify that the model is currently available and check its current rate. A model’s name or historical price in an old table is not enough to establish what it costs today.

Set a turn limit for non-interactive runs

For non-interactive agentic use, the CLI reference documents --max-turns to limit the number of turns. This bounds run length; it does not guarantee a particular saving, nor does it replace reviewing whether the result is complete and correct.

Audit usage by model and API key

Anthropic’s deprecations documentation points users to the Console Usage page and CSV export for examining usage by API key and model. Reviewing those records can help identify which configured keys and models are associated with usage before changing a workflow.

Use team-level controls where appropriate

Anthropic’s LLM gateway documentation describes centralized usage tracking, budgets, rate limits, audit logging, and routing. These are operational controls for teams; they do not, by themselves, establish that a gateway will lower the total cost of equivalent work.

The same documentation cautions: “LiteLLM is a third-party proxy service. Anthropic doesn’t endorse, maintain, or audit LiteLLM’s security or functionality.” Treat it as an optional third-party option, not an Anthropic-maintained service.

Why should you verify prices before comparing options?

Model availability and rates change. Anthropic’s deprecations page lists retirements for models that appear in an older returned version of its pricing table. Do not use those historical model names or rates as current comparisons. Before estimating a run or comparing billing routes, check the active model documentation and live pricing information for the route you actually use.

The available documentation describes mechanisms such as caching, batching, and long-context pricing, but their value depends on current model eligibility, conditions, and rates. Evaluate them against current documentation rather than assuming that a historical discount or threshold still applies. No equivalent-task cost comparison across API, subscription, Bedrock, and Vertex AI is established here, so no route can be called universally cheapest.
