CustomizerGod replaces embedded image resources inside Windows and other files. It is not the same as changing a shortcut’s icon or selecting This PC and Recycle Bin icons in Windows Settings. The utility is portable and accepts PNG, JPG, ICO, GIF and BMP images, but its publisher warns that it is not fully compatible with Windows 10 build 1903. Current Windows 11 support is not documented, so use native Windows settings for ordinary desktop customization unless you have a tested recovery plan.
What CustomizerGod actually changes
CustomizerGod, published by door2windows, opens files and lists their embedded image resources. You can replace a selected resource with another image, including resources contained in Windows or third-party files. The publisher says the program automatically converts accepted PNG, JPG, ICO, GIF and BMP files to the format required by the resource.
This is a deeper change than assigning an image to a desktop shortcut. Replacing an embedded resource can affect every Windows interface element that loads that resource, and editing a protected system file can make Windows reject the file.

CustomizerGod’s documented replacement workflow
- Run the portable application. The publisher describes CustomizerGod as free and portable, so it does not require a conventional installation.
- Browse the left-hand tabs. Select the category or file area that contains the resource you want to inspect.
- Select a resource in the right pane. The program displays image resources it can identify in the selected file.
- Choose Change. Pick a replacement PNG, JPG, ICO, GIF or BMP file. CustomizerGod converts it to the required resource format.
- Close and test the affected interface. The visible result depends on whether Windows or the relevant application can load the changed file and whether an icon cache delays the display.
Batch replacement
For multiple resources, select the resources and choose a directory whose filenames correspond to the resource IDs. The filename-to-resource-ID match is essential; an incorrectly named file will not target the intended resource.

Opening another file
The publisher says the app can open other files and list their embedded image resources. That makes it useful for inspecting a third-party file, but it does not mean every resource in every file is writable.
Why “almost any” needs qualification
Digitally signed files can be read-only
The publisher says some Windows 10 resources and shell32.dll in Windows 8 and later are read-only because they are in digitally signed system files. Changing those files breaks their signature, and Windows refuses to load them. A resource being visible in the interface therefore does not guarantee that it can be replaced safely.

The Start button is not universally supported
According to the publisher, CustomizerGod changes the Start button in Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, but not in Windows 10. Do not treat the program as a general Start-button solution.
Compatibility is dated and incomplete
Door2Windows states: “CustomizerGod is not fully compatible with Windows 10 build 1903.” The same page says the publisher no longer has a working Windows development environment and has no immediate plans to update for the latest Windows build. That warning is specific to build 1903 and does not predict behavior on every later release; it also does not establish Windows 11 support. No current Windows 11 compatibility matrix is provided, so Windows 11 use remains unverified.

Older release information
The publisher’s app list identifies version 1.7.6. SnapFiles independently lists version 1.7.6.1 as free and portable, with a last-update date of January 25, 2016. Those entries indicate legacy software metadata, not a guarantee that a download mirror is trustworthy or that no later build exists.
Older Windows prerequisite
For Windows 7 or earlier, the publisher says .NET Framework 4.5 is required. The available documentation does not state a current Windows 11 prerequisite.

Back up and recover before experimenting
When you open a system or third-party file, the publisher says CustomizerGod saves a .backup file beside the original. Keep that backup until the application is closed; deleting it sooner removes the documented local fallback.
- Before changing a resource, make sure the original file and its adjacent
.backupfile are available. - Apply one focused change rather than modifying many unrelated resources at once.
- If the result is wrong, select the affected resources and click Restore.
- Use the menu’s CustomizerGod restore option to restore the current file when appropriate.
- The menu also includes SFC options that invoke Windows System File Checker to restore modified system files and registry keys.
These are publisher-documented recovery features, not a guarantee that every failed modification can be repaired in every system state. A system image or other independent backup is prudent before editing protected Windows files.

Safer choices for normal desktop personalization
If your goal is simply to change a familiar desktop icon, avoid resource editing. Microsoft documents the path Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings for This PC, Recycle Bin, Network and User’s Files. Windows also provides built-in ways to create shortcuts to apps, files, folders and web pages, and to resize or hide desktop icons.
These controls answer the common question “How do I change default Windows icons?” when “default” means the standard desktop icons. They do not replace embedded images in system files, which is the narrower task CustomizerGod attempts.
What to use instead when you only need folder styling
CustomFolder is a narrower adjacent tool: its publisher describes changing ordinary folder icons, colors and emblems and lists support for 64-bit Windows 10 version 1909 or above. That does not make it a replacement for CustomizerGod’s system-resource editing, and its stated platform information should be checked before use.
Windows 10 lifecycle context
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. This lifecycle status is separate from whether an old icon-editing utility happens to run on a particular build.
