If a custom DPI setting resets after restarting Windows, first identify which setting is changing: Display scale affects the desktop, while a High DPI compatibility override targets one app. They are separate settings, so changing a registry value for one is not a universal fix for the other. Identify which DPI setting is reverting
Check what looks different after the restart: the size of items across the desktop, or the appearance of one application. Windows scaling changes the size of content on screen, while an app’s DPI awareness and compatibility settings affect how that program handles scaling. - The desktop and multiple apps look larger or smaller: investigate Windows Display scale and note which monitor is affected.
- Only one app looks wrong, or its override stops applying: investigate that app’s High DPI compatibility setting rather than treating it as a desktop-scale problem.
Record your Windows version and build, the affected display or app, the setting you changed, and what it returns to after restarting. Those details matter: the available reports do not identify a cause for an individual PC, and they do not establish one fix for current Windows 10 or 11 builds.

If Windows display scaling resets
Check the setting and its scope
Open Windows Settings and review System > Display > Scale. If you use more than one monitor, check the selected display and its scale value rather than assuming every monitor uses the same setting. Microsoft’s documentation explains that Windows scales content to keep it usable at different display densities; its High DPI overview is historical background focused on Windows 8 and 8.1, not a current-build reset procedure.

Restart once after noting the chosen value, then check the same display and setting. This confirms whether the change affects the desktop globally, a particular monitor, or neither. Do not blindly edit DPI registry values
Microsoft’s DPI-related registry documentation covers specific legacy scaling modes. It describes LogPixels as a system-wide scale factor for Windows 8 scaling mode, and Win8DpiScaling and DesktopDPIOverride in Windows 8.1 contexts. The page lists historical examples such as 96 for 100%, 120 for 125%, 144 for 150%, and 192 for 200%, and says custom Windows 8-mode scaling can range from 100% to 500%. Those details are not instructions to edit those values on a current Windows installation.

A March 11, 2025 Microsoft Q&A thread reports a Windows 11 user’s 150% scale returning to its prior value after restart. Community replies suggest changing LogPixels, creating a logon task that runs DisplaySwitch.exe /internal, or changing the resolution and reverting it. These are anecdotal suggestions, not Microsoft-validated general fixes; one reply says the registry change did not work for that user. The thread does not show that these steps are safe or effective across Windows 10 and 11 configurations.

Windows can stretch an app that is not DPI-aware, which may make its interface blurry. That behavior concerns how the individual app handles display density, not necessarily the desktop’s scale value. Microsoft explains this in its Win32 documentation on DPI and device-independent pixels.

Open the affected program’s executable properties and inspect its compatibility settings. Windows labels and available options can vary by version and app; the evidence here does not establish an exact current UI path or a universal selection that persists after restart. Change only the setting for the affected executable, then reopen the app and check whether the override still applies. Do not use a system-wide scaling registry edit as a substitute for an app-specific compatibility change.
Two Microsoft Q&A discussions document user reports of per-app overrides not persisting: one dated March 19, 2018, about settings not saving after reboot, and another dated June 6, 2023, about an override working only once. They are reports and community responses, not proof of a general Windows defect or a verified universal remedy: 2018 override report and 2023 override report.

What to do if it still reverts
- Keep the exact Windows version and build, affected monitor or app, selected scale or override, and observed post-restart value together when seeking support.
- State whether the entire desktop changes or only one application. This helps distinguish a display-scale issue from app DPI behavior.
- Use the Microsoft Q&A reports as examples of similar symptoms, not as confirmation that their suggested registry or startup-task changes apply to your PC.
The sources document the setting distinction and historical registry behavior, but they do not identify why a particular machine resets or verify a universal repair for current Windows 10 or 11 builds.
