When Cursor stops responding, gets stuck thinking, runs slowly, or fails to load, the symptom alone rarely identifies the cause. Start by checking whether the issue affects online features, extensions, performance, agent startup, or local app state. Then use the least disruptive diagnostic for that symptom before changing settings or clearing data.

Start by narrowing down what changed

Before troubleshooting, record the exact error or behavior, what you were doing when it happened, and whether it affects one workspace or every workspace. Note whether it began after a Cursor update, a network or VPN change, or an extension change. Find the Cursor version and operating system in the app’s Help/About screen. Cursor’s troubleshooting guide asks users to provide reproducible steps and system information when reporting a problem.

  • Chat, login, or updates fail: check connectivity to Cursor services.
  • The editor is slow or typing lags: isolate extensions and large generated folders.
  • An agent times out or fails to start: collect logs and inspect the Extension Host output.
  • The problem persists across those checks: consider app data only after exporting your profile.

If chat, login, or updates are not working

Run Cursor’s network diagnostics

In Cursor, open Settings > Network > Run Diagnostics. Cursor says this check tests its server connection and can identify network issues affecting AI features, updates, and other online functions. If it reports a connection problem, investigate firewall, proxy, VPN, or network restrictions; on a managed network, ask the administrator rather than changing security controls yourself. See Cursor’s network troubleshooting guidance.

Account for proxy and remote-network behavior

Some enterprise proxies can disrupt real-time chat or agent traffic. Cursor’s network configuration guide describes HTTP/2 bidirectional streaming as the default and an HTTP/1.1 Server-Sent Events fallback when HTTP/2 streaming does not work. For SSL-inspecting proxies, Cursor lists requirements such as allowing SSE passthrough without buffering and permitting long-running connections without forced timeouts. Network administrators should use the current guide to check compatibility.

For Remote SSH, Cursor says AI requests run from the local machine. If a VPN change is followed by DNS-related failures, Cursor’s network guidance suggests fully restarting the app; inherited environment variables can persist between sessions. These are situation-specific checks, not universal explanations.

Check current sign-in allowlisting guidance

If sign-in fails on an enterprise network, consult Cursor’s live sign-in domains page before changing allowlists. As of October 7, 2026, Cursor said sign-in was moving to accounts.spacex.ai and accounts.x.ai, with fallback to the older page scheduled to retire on October 30, 2026. These operational details can change, so coordinate allowlist changes with IT and verify the current page.

If Cursor is slow or input is delayed

Test whether an extension is responsible

Launch Cursor from a terminal with extensions disabled:

cursor --disable-extensions

If performance improves, re-enable extensions individually until the slowdown returns; that can help identify a conflicting or resource-heavy extension. Cursor’s performance guidance says high usage typically stems from extensions or settings issues.

Exclude large generated folders from indexing

Generated directories such as dist/, build/, or .next/ can add indexing work. Cursor recommends excluding large generated folders in a project’s .cursorignore file. Apply exclusions to generated content you do not need indexed, rather than broadly excluding source files that Cursor needs to understand your project.

If an agent times out or the Extension Host will not start

Collect evidence before attempting an invasive reset. Cursor’s agent troubleshooting page describes a 60-second Extension Host startup timeout and recommends exporting logs for diagnosis.

When to consider clearing app data

Clearing app data is a last resort, not a routine first step. Cursor says this can remove extensions, themes, snippets, and installation-related data. Export your profile first, then follow the current official app-data instructions for your operating system. The cleanup commands differ between Windows, macOS, and Linux, so use the platform-specific steps rather than copying a command intended for another system.

Amazon Basics 2.4 GHz Wireless Optical Computer Mouse with USB Nano Receiver, Portable, No Wires, Smooth Tracking, Multi-Device Compatibility, Black
  • Smooth, precise and affordable wireless optical 3-button mouse with USB nano receiver for laptop, desktop and netbook PCs
  • 2.4 GHz wireless (not Bluetooth) provides a powerful, reliable connection
  • Nano-receiver stays in the PC USB port or stows conveniently inside the wireless mouse when not in use (note: Receiver is stored within the mouse from production and needs to be removed upon setup)
  • Compatible with Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10
  • Easy installation - refer to user manual for instructions

Cursor also notes that reinstalling from its Downloads page restores the previous state unless app data has also been cleared. A reinstall by itself may therefore leave the underlying problem and settings in place.

What to send when you ask for help

If the symptom remains after the relevant checks, make the report easy to reproduce. Cursor’s troubleshooting guidance requests exact reproduction steps and system information; for agent problems, include the logs described above. Where relevant, add a screenshot and console errors from Developer Tools, after removing private data.

  • Exact steps that trigger the issue and the message shown
  • Whether it affects one workspace or all workspaces
  • Operating system and Cursor version from Help/About
  • Recent changes, such as an update, extension change, VPN switch, or network-policy change
  • Relevant logs or Developer Tools console errors

For an agent response, Cursor’s agent guidance also describes copying the Request ID from the response menu when posting to its forum.
