Yes—a vulnerable Cursor release can expose a developer device through specific attack paths, including prompt injection that leads to command execution or Git configuration that escapes a sandbox. These are conditional vulnerabilities, not evidence that every Cursor installation has been compromised. Your immediate steps are to update Cursor, review agent permissions and repository behavior, and keep sensitive credentials out of environments where untrusted projects are being handled.
What Cursor’s disclosed vulnerabilities mean for your device
Cursor’s security advisory index lists high- and critical-severity issues involving sandbox escapes, Git hooks, sensitive-file protections, MCP and deep-link handling, symlinks and path canonicalization, and agent-controlled working directories. These flaws matter because an AI coding editor can interact with repository files, run commands, and process content from outside the project. A weakness in those boundaries can turn an apparently ordinary coding task into a route to actions the user did not intend.
The risk depends on the specific Cursor version and attack path. Some advisories describe ways untrusted content or repository behavior could influence an agent or cross a sandbox boundary. The records do not establish that all Cursor users are silently compromised, or that opening any repository automatically compromises a computer.
Which vulnerabilities and versions are documented?
The advisories describe distinct issues, so there is no single version number that resolves every exposure. Check the advisory for each issue relevant to the version you run and install a release that contains its fix.

| Issue | Affected versions or scope stated by the source | What the source says |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt injection and command-whitelist bypass; CVE-2026-31854, CWE-78 | Cursor advisory GHSA-hf2x-r83r-qw5q lists versions ≤1.4.5 as affected and 2.0 as patched. | Indirect prompt injection combined with a whitelist bypass could lead to arbitrary command execution. The advisory is dated March 9, 2026. |
| Sandbox escape through Git configuration; CVE-2026-26268 | NIST’s NVD record describes Cursor versions prior to 2.5 as affected. | The issue involves writing Git configuration across the intended sandbox boundary. |
| Other issues in Cursor’s advisory index | Version details vary by advisory; consult the individual entry. | The index includes sandbox and Git-hook issues, sensitive-file protection bypasses, an MCP/deep-link speedbump bypass, and critical symlink/path-canonicalization and agent-controlled-working-directory issues. |
The prompt-injection advisory’s affected and patched version statements are reproduced as published; do not assume that installing 2.0 addresses the separate issue NIST describes for versions before 2.5. Cursor’s advisory index is the appropriate place to check fixes for the other listed issues.
How could an attack reach a developer laptop?
Malicious instructions in web content
In the prompt-injection advisory, Cursor can access arbitrary websites, and malicious instructions in visited content may be followed by the model. Combined with the described whitelist bypass, that path could cause commands to run without the user’s explicit intent. The practical exposure is therefore not limited to code checked into a repository: issue text, documentation, generated files, and web pages processed by an agent should also be treated as untrusted input.

Repository metadata and Git behavior
Git configuration and hooks can affect what happens when a project is opened or Git operations are performed. Cursor’s advisory index and NIST’s CVE-2026-26268 record describe vulnerabilities in this area, including a sandbox escape involving Git configuration. A repository from an unknown source should not be treated as safe merely because its visible source files look ordinary.
Filesystem boundaries and agent-controlled paths
Symlinks and path canonicalization affect where a file operation actually lands; an agent-controlled working directory affects which files or commands are in scope. Cursor’s index lists critical issues in these areas. They illustrate why a sandbox’s protections depend not only on its settings but also on how paths and agent-selected locations are validated.

How serious is prompt-injection risk in coding agents?
A 2025 AIShellJack preprint reports attack success rates as high as 84% in its evaluation of malicious prompt-injection command execution against agentic coding editors, including Cursor. That is a result from the authors’ study setting, not an estimate of the chance that an ordinary Cursor user will be attacked or compromised. It does, however, underline why approval gates and isolation matter when an agent handles hostile content.
What should you do to reduce exposure?
- Update against the specific advisory. Check Cursor’s security advisory index and install a version that fixes the issue affecting your release. For the prompt-injection advisory, Cursor lists 2.0 as patched; NIST’s Git-configuration record concerns versions before 2.5. Do not use one of those figures as a universal fixed version for every issue.
- Keep human approval in the execution path. Leave command-approval gates enabled. Read the command and its effects before approving it, especially when it came from agent reasoning over an issue, webpage, or unfamiliar repository.
- Review repository actions before allowing them. Inspect proposed Git hooks, Git configuration changes, filesystem edits, and commands. Be cautious about MCP integrations and deep-link or install prompts; do not accept a speedbump or permission prompt simply because an agent recommends it.
- Limit what the agent can reach. Use Workspace Trust and available filesystem restrictions where applicable. Avoid exposing personal files, production secrets, SSH keys, cloud credentials, or broad write access to a session working on untrusted material.
- Use privacy and administration controls deliberately. Cursor’s security page describes Privacy Mode and enterprise administration controls. Organizations should apply their policies consistently and define how developers handle external repositories and agent permissions.
- Isolate high-risk work. For projects that may be hostile or for work involving valuable credentials, use a disposable virtual machine or a separately managed workstation, and provide only the credentials needed for that task. This is a defensive measure based on the documented command-execution and sandbox-escape paths, not a claim that Cursor requires a VM.
- Monitor and prepare recovery. Developer endpoint security or EDR can help detect suspicious process activity on engineering workstations. Maintain a way to revoke exposed tokens, rotate credentials, and restore a clean environment if an investigation indicates compromise.
What Cursor says about its security program
Cursor’s security page says the company commits to at-least-annual third-party penetration testing, provides enterprise administration controls and Privacy Mode, and maintains a vulnerability-reporting process. It also says critical incidents are communicated by email to affected users. These program statements are useful context, but they do not replace applying fixes or controlling what an agent can access.

A separate Cursor update dated February 28, 2025, about a ToDesktop incident said, “This means no users were affected, and you do not need to take any action to be protected.” That statement applies to the specific ToDesktop incident described in that update; it should not be read as a blanket assurance about the vulnerabilities covered here.
