To convert a cURL command to JavaScript, paste it into curlconverter.com/javascript, choose the right JavaScript target, and review the result against the original request. For a browser request, use the browser fetch output; for Node.js, select a Node target such as Axios or Got. Treat generated code as a starting point: cookies, authentication, body handling, redirects, compression, and runtime defaults may need attention.

Convert a cURL command to JavaScript in five steps

  1. Capture the request. Open your browser’s developer tools, select the Network tab, and reproduce the action that sends the request. Right-click or Ctrl-click the request and choose Copy → Copy as cURL. Chrome, Safari, and Firefox document this workflow.
  2. Choose an output target. Open curlconverter.com/javascript and paste the command into the converter. The JavaScript page generates fetch-style code. If you need Node.js code, select a Node-specific target instead.
  3. Inspect the generated request. Confirm the URL, HTTP method, query parameters, headers, authentication, and request body. Remove browser-only headers or cookies that your program does not need.
  4. Protect credentials. Replace copied authorization values and cookies with environment variables or another secret store before saving or sharing the code. Treat a shared cookie like a password.
  5. Run and compare it. Send the request in the intended runtime and compare its response with the original cURL command. Review redirects, compression, TLS, timeouts, streaming, multipart uploads, and response parsing if behavior differs.

Copying a request from DevTools is especially useful when an API’s actual method, headers, or payload are unclear. It captures what the browser sent, but it can also copy session credentials and other headers that should not be carried into production.

Copy a request as cURL from browser DevTools

In Chrome, Safari, or Firefox, open developer tools and find the request in the Network panel. Use the request’s context menu and select the option to copy it as cURL. The exact menu wording or placement can vary with browser version, but the basic workflow is the same: capture a request in Network, copy the cURL representation, and paste it into the converter.

For a request that occurs only after an interaction, clear or preserve the Network log as needed, repeat the interaction, then select the relevant request. If the command contains multiple headers or a long body, make sure you copied the intended request rather than an unrelated asset or preflight request.

Pick the JavaScript runtime before you convert

“JavaScript” does not identify one HTTP client. Browser fetch runs in a web page and follows browser security rules. Node.js code runs on a server or local machine and can use its native HTTP support or a package. The converter project offers several outputs, including JavaScript, jQuery, XHR, node-http, node-axios, node-got, node-ky, node-request, and node-superagent.

Target Use it when What to verify
Browser fetch The request belongs in client-side browser code. Cross-origin permissions, browser-managed credentials, and forbidden headers may affect the request.
Node fetch-style output You want fetch-like code in Node.js. Check the target’s generated imports and the Node version or package requirements in your project.
node-http You want code using Node’s HTTP path without choosing a higher-level client. Review how the code handles response streams, errors, and redirects.
node-axios, node-got, node-ky, node-request, node-superagent Your application already uses that client, or you prefer its API. Check dependency installation, defaults, response parsing, and error behavior for the selected client.
jQuery or XHR You need compatibility with an existing codebase using those APIs. Confirm the target is appropriate for the environment and existing dependencies.

Do not choose a target just because its output looks familiar. A browser request and a Node request can have different permissions, cookie handling, dependency requirements, and defaults. If matching cURL behavior matters, compare the generated program with the command instead of assuming that similar syntax means identical behavior.

Review each part of the generated request

Method, URL, and query string

Check that the HTTP method is unchanged and that query parameters have not been omitted, duplicated, or incorrectly encoded. A cURL command may express parameters as part of the URL or through options that the converter translates. Compare the final URL your code sends with the original command.

Headers, cookies, and authorization

Copied browser commands can include cookies, bearer tokens, or other sensitive values. Keep only headers required by the endpoint; browser-generated headers may be irrelevant or unavailable in another runtime. Store secrets outside source code, and rotate credentials if a sensitive command has already been shared or committed.

The converter says commands are processed locally in the browser and are not transmitted or recorded by the site. That privacy statement does not make a copied command safe to publish: the command itself may contain credentials.

Request bodies and files

Check how the generated code represents JSON, form data, and multipart bodies. The converter repository says it can convert JSON data into native objects, but the output still needs to match the receiving API’s expectations. File uploads and shell-based file references deserve particular care: paths and shell expansions in a command may not map directly to a browser or Node program.

Response handling and errors

Confirm whether the code reads text, JSON, a binary body, or a stream, and what it does when the server returns an error status. HTTP clients differ in whether an error response rejects a promise or is returned as a normal response, so application logic should handle the selected library’s semantics deliberately.

Make the conversion repeatable with npm

For one-off conversion, the website is usually the simplest path. For repeatable conversion in a development workflow, the project provides a command-line interface and a JavaScript library. Its npm documentation states that Node.js 12 or later is required.

Install the CLI globally

npm install --global curlconverter

The CLI accepts a cURL command or input from standard input and supports a language flag. Check the installed CLI’s help output for the precise flag syntax and supported target names in that version before adding it to a script.

Install the library locally

npm install curlconverter

The library exposes conversion functions for command strings and for already-parsed argument arrays. Use the string form when you have a cURL command; use parsed arguments when another part of your program already handles parsing. See the project’s npm documentation for the current API and examples.

Where conversion can be imperfect

  • HTTP only: The repository describes support for HTTP. Commands that rely on non-HTTP cURL protocols are outside that stated support.
  • Bash parsing is incomplete: The parser understands several Bash constructs, but not all Bash syntax. Complex quoting, nested command substitutions, or other shell features can result in incomplete or invalid output.
  • Shell variables can change the parse: A command that depends on environment variables or shell expansion may not convert as intended. Resolve or simplify the command carefully, without exposing secrets.
  • Runtime defaults differ: Redirect following and gzip decompression can behave differently between cURL and the generated JavaScript client. The result can also differ in timeout, TLS, streaming, and response handling.
  • Warnings matter: The repository says the converter can report warnings. Read them and verify any affected option rather than assuming the generated code preserves every behavior.

The closer the original command is to a plain HTTP request with explicit values, the easier it is to inspect the translation. Conversion is less dependable when shell logic, implicit environment state, or specialized cURL behavior is part of the request.

Troubleshoot common conversion problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
The output is invalid or omits part of the request. The command uses Bash syntax, nested substitutions, or variables the parser does not handle. Simplify the command, replace shell-dependent pieces with explicit values for conversion, then restore secrets through environment variables in the finished program. Check converter warnings.
The request works in cURL but not in a browser. Browser security rules, including cross-origin restrictions, or browser-only header constraints. Check the browser console and the server’s cross-origin configuration. If the call belongs on a server, use a Node target rather than trying to bypass browser restrictions.
The request reaches a different URL or returns a different result. Redirect behavior, query encoding, or headers differ. Inspect the final URL, redirect chain, method, and headers. Configure the chosen client deliberately and compare the response with cURL.
A compressed response is handled differently. The JavaScript runtime or client has different gzip defaults from cURL. Check the response headers and the selected client’s compression behavior; avoid decompressing data twice.
Authentication fails after conversion. A required cookie or authorization header was removed, expired, or copied incorrectly. Confirm which credential the endpoint actually requires, acquire a fresh one securely, and load it from a secret store rather than hard-coding it.
JSON parsing fails although the request completed. The response is not JSON, is empty, or has an error body in another format. Inspect the status, content type, and raw response body before parsing; handle non-success statuses and empty responses explicitly.
A file or multipart upload is missing. A local file path or shell expansion did not translate into the target runtime’s file or form-data API. Build the upload using the selected runtime’s supported file and multipart interfaces, and verify the resulting content type and body.
The converter’s result leaks a secret when shared. The copied DevTools command included session cookies or authorization values. Remove the values, replace them with environment variables, and rotate credentials if they were exposed.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

The converter’s browser page says conversion happens entirely in the browser without transmitting or recording the command. For repeat use, a local CLI or library can fit into a development workflow, but generated code is still subject to the selected runtime’s dependencies and network behavior.

Conversion itself does not establish that the resulting request will be reliable or fast. Production code still needs suitable timeout and retry policies, intentional redirect handling, safe secret management, and response validation. Do not retry non-idempotent operations automatically unless the API supports a safe retry mechanism.

The converter is presented as a free web conversion tool; the cited project materials do not establish a paid plan or a performance guarantee. Assess the runtime and service that actually sends the HTTP request for operational cost and reliability.

If your goal is to capture a website screenshot rather than reproduce an arbitrary API call, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-request example is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Before capture, it can accept a consent banner like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of these steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents to take screenshots, inspect page information, and capture PDFs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert a cURL command to JavaScript without installing anything?

Yes. Paste the command into curlconverter.com/javascript and copy the generated code; choose a Node-specific target if you need Node.js rather than browser fetch.

Does the converter upload my cURL command?

The converter site states that conversion happens locally in the browser and that it does not transmit or record commands. Still remove credentials before sharing a command or its generated output.

Can every cURL command be converted accurately?

No. The project supports HTTP, but its Bash parser is incomplete and JavaScript runtime defaults can differ from cURL. Verify complex shell commands and behavior-sensitive options manually.
