Choose ISTQB CT-AI v2.0 if you need to test AI-based systems, including machine-learning and generative-AI products. Choose CT-GenAI v1.1 if you want to apply generative AI and large language models to software-testing work. Both require the Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL); they address related but different skills.

What is the difference between CT-AI and CT-GenAI?

The key distinction is what you are testing. CT-AI focuses on the quality and behavior of an AI system under test: its data, models, and outputs. CT-GenAI focuses on using generative AI to support the tester’s work across the software-testing lifecycle.

Which certification should you take for your role?

Choose CT-AI if you validate an AI or machine-learning system

CT-AI is the more direct match for AI/ML product testers, data professionals, and test engineers responsible for validating a model or AI-based product. Its scope includes input data, models, machine-learning development testing, AI-specific quality characteristics, and testing generative-AI systems. The aim is to test the AI system itself, not simply use an LLM to speed up test work.

Choose CT-GenAI if you want to use LLMs in testing work

CT-GenAI fits testers and automation engineers who want to use generative AI to analyze requirements, design tests, support automation, or improve reporting. Its syllabus centers on applying GenAI across the testing lifecycle, including prompt engineering, evaluating outputs, risk, integration, and organizational adoption.

If your job involves both

Compare the learning objectives against the work you need to do first. The credentials are adjacent, not interchangeable: CT-AI includes testing GenAI systems, while CT-GenAI teaches how to apply GenAI in the testing process. A tester responsible for both activities may eventually benefit from both, but the immediate project need is the practical tie-breaker.

What are the current syllabus versions and transition dates?

CT-AI v2.0 is the current version and replaces v1.0. ISTQB says v1.0 exams remain available in English through April 21, 2027, and in non-English versions through October 21, 2027. Existing v1.0 certificates remain valid, and an upgrade is not mandatory. If you plan to take an exam or course before those dates, confirm which syllabus version applies with the provider.

CT-GenAI is at syllabus v1.1. ISTQB describes v1.1 as a minor update that does not change the structure, learning objectives, or overall scope. See the CT-AI page and CT-GenAI page for the current materials and version information.

How should you prepare?

  1. Confirm the credential and version. Match your target exam to CT-AI v2.0 or CT-GenAI v1.1 and use the syllabus for that version.
  2. Study the official syllabus. Both certifications support self-study; download the current syllabus from the relevant ISTQB certification page.
  3. Try the official sample exam. Use it to become familiar with the question style and identify topics that need more study.
  4. Consider accredited training if it suits your needs. ISTQB recommends accredited training for CT-AI, and accredited providers offer CT-GenAI courses. Training is not presented as a requirement, and no course can guarantee a passing result.
  5. Check local logistics. Exam prices and provider availability vary by location, so confirm the booking details with a local provider.

What the certifications do not tell you

ISTQB’s certification pages establish their exam requirements and subject matter, but they do not establish that one certificate leads to higher pay, better job placement, or stronger employer recognition than the other. Choose based on the skills your role needs and any certification requirements set by your employer; assess market outcomes separately rather than assuming one credential is more valuable.
