A CSV export can succeed even when Excel displays the result incorrectly. CSV stores text and values, while Excel interprets those values when it opens the file; the cause depends on what looks wrong. Check whether the problem is column splitting, garbled characters, changed values, or missing workbook features, then use the matching fix.

First identify what “didn’t work” means

The title alone does not identify the cause. A CSV may open with everything in one column, split fields incorrectly, show unreadable characters, lose leading zeros, change date-like strings, or omit workbook formatting. Those symptoms point to different problems: Excel’s delimiter and data-type choices, the file’s encoding, or CSV’s limits as a format.

A CSV is a text file for exchanging values, not a full-fidelity Excel workbook. Microsoft says the format saves text and values as displayed in cells of the active worksheet; it does not preserve workbook formatting, graphics, or other workbook contents. Microsoft’s explanation of what CSV does not transfer describes this distinction.

How should you open a CSV in Excel?

Method Best for Trade-off
Open the CSV directly Quickly viewing a simple file when Excel’s defaults interpret it correctly. Excel applies default data-format settings, so you have less control over delimiters, encoding, and column types.
Import the file Checking how fields split and controlling data interpretation before loading. Requires choosing import settings rather than simply opening the file.

To import, use Data > Get Data > From Text/CSV where available, then review the preview and import options. Depending on your Excel version, platform, and settings, the interface may differ; the Text Import Wizard is another route in versions that provide it. Microsoft documents the import and export options in its guide to text and CSV files.

If columns are misaligned, check the delimiter

When the whole row appears in one column, or fields are split into unexpected columns, Excel may be using a delimiter that does not match the file. In the import preview, choose the delimiter used by the CSV and check that the preview shows the intended columns before loading.

Also check the text qualifier. A quoted field can contain a delimiter as part of its value—for example, a comma inside an address—without that comma marking a new column. The text qualifier tells Excel to keep the enclosed content together. Excel’s preview and import controls are described in Microsoft’s text and CSV import guide.

Do not assume every CSV uses commas. The delimiter used when a CSV is saved can be affected by regional and list-separator settings, so the file’s actual separator may differ from what you expect.

If characters are garbled, check encoding

Unreadable accented letters or symbols can indicate that Excel did not interpret the file’s character encoding as intended. Microsoft says a UTF-8 CSV opens normally when it is saved with a byte order mark (BOM). If the file has no BOM, use Excel’s text/CSV import workflow—such as Power Query or Get Data From Text—instead of opening it directly. See Microsoft’s UTF-8 CSV guidance.

If Excel changed values, import identifiers as text

Excel can interpret digit strings as numbers or dates. That may remove leading zeros from postal codes or account codes, turn date-like text into a date, or display long values in scientific notation. For identifiers such as product codes, phone numbers, and account numbers, exact text matters more than arithmetic.

During import, set those columns to Text before loading. Microsoft documents both automatic conversions and the limits of numeric precision in its guidance on leading zeros and large numbers. Excel retains only 15 significant digits for numeric values. If conversion has already removed zeros or truncated digits, changing the cell’s display format afterward cannot restore the original value; reimport from the unchanged CSV with the column treated as text.

If workbook features disappeared, use an Excel workbook format

CSV does not preserve formatting, graphics, or other workbook contents, and it saves only the active worksheet’s displayed text and values. If those features need to remain, save or export the work as an Excel workbook format rather than CSV. A CSV can still be the right choice when the goal is a simple text-based exchange of values.
