Use CSS transitions for simple, self-contained style changes; reach for a React animation library when you need coordinated enter and exit effects, gestures, spring physics, or sequences that respond to changing state. For certain DOM transitions, React 19.3 also offers <ViewTransition>, so a third-party library is not the only option beyond CSS.

There is no universal performance winner. The properties being animated, the browser’s rendering work, and the device matter more than whether an animation is labeled “CSS” or “JavaScript.”

Which approach should you use?

Choose When it fits Typical example
CSS transition A small, state-driven style change on an element, with no complicated sequencing or lifecycle requirements. Changing a button’s background color on hover or focus.
React animation library You need gestures, spring-like motion, coordinated elements, interruptible sequences, or an element to animate out after React removes it. A modal that animates in and out, or a draggable card that follows a pointer.
React <ViewTransition> A supported React DOM update should transition using CSS View Transition Classes or callbacks that animate through the Web Animations API. A selected transition between DOM states where React’s feature meets the project’s version and support needs.

Motion’s official React guide describes CSS transitions as a lightweight solution for simple, self-contained effects such as a hover color change. That is a useful rule of thumb: start with the smallest tool that expresses the effect clearly, then add an animation library when the interaction itself needs richer control.

When CSS transitions are enough

CSS is a good fit when a style changes because an element enters a state—such as :hover, :focus-visible, or a class that React adds or removes. The browser can interpolate between the old and new values without a separate animation component or dependency.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Use CSS for simple color, opacity, or transform changes tied to a clear state.
  • Keep the trigger and end state understandable in your component’s class or style logic.
  • Prefer a transition over a library when there is no meaningful need for sequencing, gesture input, or special exit handling.

MDN’s CSS transitions guide documents the browser-native mechanism and its syntax. CSS remains capable of more than hover effects, but a complicated interaction can become harder to coordinate when its behavior is spread across state classes and transition rules.

When a React animation library earns its place

A library is useful when animation is part of the component’s behavior rather than merely a visual response to a style change. Motion for React documents animation props, gestures, layout animation, SVG, and exit behavior. Its transition API supports tween, spring, and inertia types, with settings such as duration, delay, easing, spring stiffness, damping, mass, keyframe timing, and staggering.

Coordinating elements or sequences

When several elements must enter in order, animate with staggered timing, or respond together to an interaction, a library can keep the orchestration close to the React components involved. Motion’s transition documentation describes its available transition types and configuration. These are Motion-specific capabilities; other libraries may use different APIs.

Handling gestures and interruptible motion

Dragging, inertia, and spring responses need behavior beyond transitioning between two static style values. A React library can expose those controls in component-level APIs, making the interaction easier to express than a collection of CSS rules and event handlers.

Animating elements removed from the tree

React normally removes a component when its state or render logic no longer includes it. If the element must finish an exit animation before it disappears, ordinary CSS on that removed element is not enough by itself. Motion documents AnimatePresence for managing this case.

React’s built-in View Transition option

React 19.3 documentation describes <ViewTransition> for selected updates. It can use CSS View Transition Classes or callbacks that animate through the Web Animations API, and React’s reference states that the feature currently works in the DOM. See the React 19.3 release article and the ViewTransition reference.

Check the exact React version and DOM environment used by your project before choosing it. It is a React-specific option for supported transitions, not a general replacement for CSS transitions or every feature in an animation library.

Are CSS transitions faster than JavaScript animations?

Not as a blanket rule. A transition that changes transform or opacity is often efficient because those properties can commonly be composited. Animating a layout-affecting property such as height can require layout work and may affect neighboring elements. Motion’s performance guide explains the browser work involved—layout, paint, and compositing—and is vendor guidance rather than an independent head-to-head benchmark.

CSS and Web Animations API animations can run off the main thread in some cases, while JavaScript-driven animation work runs on the main thread and can be delayed by other work. That does not mean all CSS runs off the main thread, or that every library animation is computed in JavaScript on every frame: Motion documents a hybrid approach that uses browser APIs where possible and falls back to JavaScript for some capabilities. Browser acceleration depends on conditions, so treat it as progressive enhancement rather than a guarantee.

Respect reduced-motion preferences

Some users ask their operating system or browser to reduce motion. Design an alternative that preserves the interaction’s meaning without unnecessary movement, particularly when motion is large, continuous, or triggered frequently.

For CSS, MDN documents the prefers-reduced-motion media feature in its reference. Motion provides a user-preference policy through MotionConfig. Whichever approach you use, make the reduced-motion behavior part of the design rather than treating it as a last-minute performance tweak.

Account for project cost and maintenance

A library adds a dependency, an API to learn, and another piece of tooling to maintain. That cost can be worthwhile when its coordination, gestures, lifecycle handling, or physics simplify real product behavior. For a few uncomplicated state changes, CSS usually avoids unnecessary abstraction.

Motion for React and React Spring are examples of React animation libraries; the available evidence establishes React Spring as a project, but does not support a detailed API or performance comparison between the two. Bundle impact also depends on the exact version and build, so do not assume a fixed size or add a bundle-size estimate without checking your own production output.

A practical decision process

  1. Describe the effect. If it is a simple style change tied to a state, begin with CSS transitions.
  2. Check lifecycle needs. If an element must animate out after React stops rendering it, consider a library with explicit exit handling, such as Motion’s AnimatePresence.
  3. Check interaction needs. If the design requires gestures, spring or inertia behavior, sequencing, or coordinated components, assess a React animation library.
  4. Check React support. For a suitable DOM transition, verify whether <ViewTransition> is available in your project’s exact React version.
  5. Check accessibility and rendering cost. Define reduced-motion behavior, favor efficient properties where appropriate, and test demanding effects on representative devices.

Motion’s official React documentation is at motion.dev/docs/react. Its capabilities are examples of what one library offers, not proof that it is the best library for every React project.
