Choose a CSS layout method by asking how the content should behave: use Flexbox to arrange items along one axis, Grid to coordinate rows and columns, multi-column layout to flow continuous text, floats to wrap text around an item, and positioning for deliberate offsets or overlays. Start with semantic HTML that remains readable in normal document flow, then combine layout methods where needed.
Start with normal flow
Normal flow is the browser’s default layout behavior. In a typical horizontal writing mode, block boxes stack vertically, while inline content shares lines and wraps as space allows. A page built on meaningful HTML and readable normal flow has a useful foundation even if layout styling is reduced or unavailable.
Think of the other methods as tools for changing particular relationships between boxes—not as competing ways to build an entire page. A page can use Grid for its main regions, Flexbox inside a navigation bar, and normal flow for the article text.
Use Flexbox for one-dimensional arrangements
Flexbox arranges a set of items in a row or column. It can align those items and distribute extra space; items can grow or shrink as space changes. That makes it useful when the relationship you need is primarily along one axis.

- Choose it when: the items need to align or share available space in one direction, without requiring coordinated row-and-column placement.
Use Grid for two-dimensional alignment
Grid coordinates rows and columns. It is a good fit when regions or repeated items should line up across both axes, when you need explicit placement, or when named areas make a page’s structure easier to express. Grid can also place items automatically into flexible tracks for fluid listings.
Example: a fluid card collection
This track definition lets Grid create as many columns as fit, with each track at least 200px wide and able to share remaining space:

}The 200px minimum is an example value, not a universal recommendation; choose a minimum that suits the content and the available space. Flexbox inside each card handles its internal one-axis arrangement, while Grid lays out the collection in two dimensions.
Use multi-column layout for one continuous stream
Multi-column layout breaks a continuous stream of content into newspaper-like columns. You can control preferred column count or width, gaps, rules, and content breaks. Unlike Grid, it flows content from one column into the next rather than placing independent items in separate cells.

- Choose it for: continuous material intended to flow through columns.
- Do not choose it just because: a set of independent cards or page regions appears in columns. Use Grid or Flexbox when those items need their own placement and alignment.
Use floats when text should wrap around an item
A float places an item, such as an image, to one side so surrounding text can wrap around it. Floats were once used to create page columns, but they are not the relevant choice for structured page layouts when Grid and Flexbox are available.
Use a float when the wrapping behavior itself is wanted. For independent page regions or a structured card layout, use Grid or Flexbox instead.

Use positioning for deliberate placement
Static positioning is the default. Relative positioning keeps an element in normal flow. Absolute, fixed, and sticky positioning take elements out of normal flow, so surrounding content does not make space for them in the same way.
- Use positioning for: purposeful placement that interacts little with surrounding content, such as an overlay or an element attached to a viewport or containing block.
- Be deliberate: because positioned elements do not affect surrounding layout in the same way as in-flow content, check whether they overlap other content or need a layout counterpart.
Responsive design adapts the layout; it is not a layout algorithm
Responsive design is a set of practices for adapting a page to viewing conditions, rather than a separate layout method. Media queries can apply styles under conditions such as screen width or resolution. Flexible Grid tracks can also adapt naturally as available width changes.

Let the content guide the adaptation: use flexible tracks where they fit, and add media-query changes when the layout needs a different arrangement under particular conditions. Check the result at the widths and viewing conditions that matter for the page rather than assuming one fixed arrangement works everywhere.

Choose by the content’s behavior
