font: inherit makes an element use its parent’s computed font shorthand value. It can bring a button or other control into line with surrounding text, but it does not select a font or restore the browser default. Because font properties normally inherit, the declaration is often unnecessary for ordinary text descendants.
What does font: inherit mean?
inherit is a CSS-wide keyword: it tells a property to take the computed value of that property from the element’s parent in the document tree. MDN Web Docs describes it as causing an element to take “the computed value of the property from its parent element.” MDN’s reference for inherit
Since font is a shorthand property, font: inherit applies inheritance to the font shorthand as a whole. It is broader than font-family: inherit, which copies only the parent’s font family. The shorthand covers font styling components such as family, size, weight, and style. MDN’s font reference
For example, if a parent’s computed font is bold, italic, and 18px in a particular family, a child with font: inherit takes that computed shorthand value. It does not request a particular named font, load a font file, or mean “use the browser default.”

When should you use it?
Font properties normally inherit, so ordinary text descendants usually receive their parent’s typography without an explicit declaration. Adding font: inherit to every paragraph or span is commonly redundant. MDN’s guide to inheritance
The declaration is useful when another matching rule gives an element a different font and you want it to follow its parent instead. Form controls such as buttons can have typography that differs from surrounding page text; applying inheritance can make their font match the page’s computed font, depending on the styles and cascade in effect. How does it differ from related choices?

Inheritance is not restricted to properties that inherit by default: the inherit keyword can request the parent’s computed value even for a property that normally does not inherit. In the case of font, its font components normally inherit already. MDN’s inheritance guide

Why doesn’t font: inherit restore the browser default?
inherit copies from the parent; it does not reset a property to its initial value or ask the browser to choose its default font. For properties that do not inherit by default, the initial value is normally used when no value is specified, but browser styles, user styles, and the cascade can affect what is rendered. If the goal is to match a parent, use inheritance. If the goal is to undo a rule or return toward a default or earlier cascade value, choose a reset or rollback approach suited to that goal; those outcomes are not interchangeable.
