When CSS looks different across browsers, identify the exact browser, version, and failing feature before changing code. Inspect the affected page in that browser’s developer tools, check whether the rule is parsed or overridden, and compare the exact CSS property, value, selector, or subfeature against the browsers your site needs to support. Then preserve a usable baseline, add conditional enhancements where appropriate, and test the fix across your target devices.
Why CSS differs between browsers
“This browser” is not a sufficiently precise diagnosis. Support can vary by browser version and by the particular CSS feature involved: a browser may support a property but not a newer value, selector, or behavior associated with it. A page can also look wrong because a declaration is invalid, overridden, inherited, or affected by other styles—not because the browser lacks support.
The right fix depends on what failed, which browser and version must work, and whether the feature is essential or an enhancement. Start by isolating the failure rather than adding a prefix or rewriting the whole stylesheet.
Diagnose the problem in a repeatable order
1. Reproduce and isolate it
Record the browser and version, operating system, viewport size, and the visible difference. Reproduce the issue at the same viewport where it occurs. Reduce the page to the smallest HTML and CSS example that still shows the problem; this helps separate the failing rule from unrelated page styles.

2. Inspect what the browser applied
Open the affected page’s developer tools and inspect the element whose appearance is wrong. Check whether the declaration appears in the styles panel, whether the browser marks it invalid or inactive, and what value appears in computed styles. Look for competing declarations, inheritance, specificity, and rules inside media queries. If the declaration is absent or crossed out, investigate parsing and the cascade before assuming a compatibility gap.
Validate the HTML and CSS for syntax errors. A malformed rule or markup problem can change how styles are interpreted and make a browser-support issue appear more likely than it is.

3. Check the exact feature and target versions
Look up compatibility for the exact property, value, selector, or subfeature—not just the broad CSS topic. Compare that information with the specific browser versions required by your project. MDN feature documentation includes compatibility information, and the MDN Browser Compat Data project provides machine-readable compatibility data for web technologies, including CSS.
4. Decide whether the feature needs a fallback
Ask whether the styling is essential to content and usability or an optional enhancement. If a required browser does not support the feature, provide a simpler working alternative. If it is an enhancement, let browsers that support it receive the improved styling while other browsers retain the baseline.

5. Verify the actual page across the target matrix
Test the page in the browsers, versions, operating systems, devices, and viewport sizes that matter to your audience. A feature query or compatibility table cannot prove that the complete page behaves correctly in every implementation. If a required platform is not available locally, MDN describes online cross-browser testing services, including Sauce Labs, as one way to test it.
Use a baseline and progressive enhancement
Put the usable, broadly supported styling first. Add newer or optional behavior afterward, and use a feature query when the browser’s reported support for a declaration or selector is an appropriate condition for applying the enhancement.

}The initial display: block rule provides a simple baseline. Browsers that report support for the tested grid declaration receive the grid layout. Adapt the fallback to the content: a fallback must remain readable and usable, not merely avoid a CSS error.
Feature queries can test declarations and selectors. For example, @supports selector(:focus-visible) can conditionally apply rules that use that selector. A successful query means the browser reports support for the tested syntax; it does not establish that every related interaction or layout is free of implementation bugs. Test the rendered result.

When to use vendor prefixes—and when not to
A vendor prefix is not a general-purpose compatibility repair. Check the current reference for the exact feature and the browsers you need to support before adding one. Prefix-only CSS can exclude browsers that support the unprefixed standard, and prefixed features may change or be removed. MDN cautions that prefixes were not intended as a production default and can themselves contribute to cross-browser problems.
If documentation shows that a particular target browser still needs a prefix for a specific feature, use only the prefix and ordering supported by that feature’s guidance, alongside the standard declaration where appropriate. Do not copy a bundle of historical prefixes into every rule.
Choose a fix that matches the failure

Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Checking only a browser name: Support is feature- and version-specific. Verify the exact feature against the versions in your support requirements.
- Adding a prefix before inspecting the cascade: First determine whether the declaration is parsed, overridden, inherited, or missing.
- Using
@supportsas a guarantee of correct behavior: It checks reported syntax support, not whether the whole page’s layout or interaction works as intended. - Testing only one viewport or device: Reproduce and verify at the conditions where the issue occurs, and include the combinations the project needs to support.
- Replacing a working baseline with a new feature: Keep a usable fallback when the feature is necessary for your audience, or make it a progressive enhancement when it is optional.
