Check support for your operating system and toolchain, confirm how a library handles optional processor extensions, and choose an API and deployment model that fit your needs. Arm64 alone does not guarantee that a CPU implements AES, SHA, SVE, or any other optional cryptography feature.
What Arm64 support means for a cryptography library
Arm64, also called AArch64, describes a processor architecture; it does not guarantee that every operating system, library release, compiler configuration, or CPU feature is supported. A project’s tested-platform list is useful evidence, but it applies to the listed project version and platforms—not every Arm64 machine.
For example, the Python cryptography project’s version 50.0.2 installation guide lists ARM64 macOS 26 Tahoe, ARM64 Ubuntu rolling, and ARM64 Alpine latest among its tested platforms. Those entries describe that release’s test matrix, which may change. Check the cryptography 50.0.2 installation guide for the exact combination you plan to deploy.
How Arm cryptography extensions affect deployment
Arm processors may provide optional instructions that accelerate cryptographic operations. Which extensions are available depends on the target CPU; a binary that assumes an unavailable instruction can fail rather than merely run more slowly.

OpenSSL: detect capabilities instead of assuming them
OpenSSL documents Arm capability detection during libcrypto initialization. It records detected capabilities and can use corresponding implementations for features including AES, SHA-1, SHA-256, PMULL, SHA-512, hardware random-number generation, SM3, SM4, SHA3, SVE, and SVE2-related paths. PMULL can accelerate polynomial multiplication used in operations such as AES-GCM. The OpenSSL Arm capability documentation warns: “Attempting to executing an instruction from an extension that the target CPU does not support will result in an illegal instruction exception (SIGILL).”
OpenSSL documents openssl info -cpusettings as a way to inspect detected capabilities. Its documentation also notes that on certain Apple platforms, SHA3 hardware acceleration can be slower than alternative implementations. Hardware acceleration is therefore not automatically faster for every operation or device.

Build flags are not runtime detection
Compiler flags can enable instructions in generated code, but they do not establish that every machine running the binary supports those instructions. The libsodium installation guide says some AArch64 compiler configurations may require -march=armv8-a+crypto+aes. Treat that as a build-specific instruction, not a safe default for software distributed to an unknown range of CPUs. See the libsodium installation guidance for its build cautions.
A useful reference for the distinction between architecture names, compiler targets, and runtime feature checks is BoringSSL’s pinned Arm cryptography feature table. It maps features to architecture identifiers, compiler macros and flags, and Linux or Windows detection mechanisms; it is an implementation reference, not a compatibility guarantee for other libraries.

How the projects differ
| Option | What the cited project information establishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| OpenSSL | Its documentation describes runtime Arm capability detection and optimized paths for multiple cryptographic extensions. | Confirm the APIs and algorithms your application needs, the target platform’s support, and behavior on CPUs without optional extensions. |
| libsodium | The project describes APIs for encryption, decryption, signatures, password hashing, and related operations. Its introduction identifies Windows arm64, iOS, and Android among supported platforms, and lists libsodium 1.0.22-stable as the latest version at the time reflected there. | Check the current release and platform instructions for your compiler and deployment target. The project’s build guidance includes AArch64-specific cautions. |
Python cryptography |
Version 50.0.2 lists ARM64 macOS 26 Tahoe, ARM64 Ubuntu rolling, and ARM64 Alpine latest in its tested-platform matrix. | Check the versioned installation guide for current platform, backend, and build requirements. |
The projects serve different needs; these details do not establish a universal winner or a comparative speed ranking. The libsodium introduction describes its API scope and identifies its license as ISC. For compliance-sensitive deployments, verify current release and support policies and any required validated-module evidence directly with the relevant project and regulator; the information here does not establish certification for a particular deployment.

For compatible Linux environments, the cryptography project says installation generally uses prebuilt wheels, avoiding a local cryptography build. If a compatible wheel is unavailable and you build from source, its version 50.0.2 guide lists C and Rust compilers, Python headers where applicable, and OpenSSL and libffi development headers among the requirements.

Choose and validate a library for your target
- List the operations and APIs you need. Identify required algorithms, modes, signatures, password hashing, and language bindings. Confirm that the library’s current API supports them.
- Check the exact platform and release. Match the library version to your operating system, Arm64 variant, compiler, and packaging method. Do not generalize from one project’s test matrix to another.
- Understand feature handling. Determine whether the library detects CPU capabilities at runtime or whether your build flags assume specific instructions. If you ship to varied processors, ensure the binary has a safe path for CPUs lacking optional extensions.
- Confirm compliance and maintenance needs. Validate any required certification or support commitment against current project documentation and the relevant regulator.
- Benchmark on the intended hardware if performance matters. Compare representative algorithms, message sizes, and modes on the CPUs and operating systems you will deploy. The cited official material does not provide comparable cross-library Arm64 benchmarks, so it cannot support a fastest-library claim.
