Neither crypto remittances nor traditional international money transfers are universally cheaper or faster. The better choice depends on the sending and receiving countries, transfer amount, exchange rate, fees, delivery method and—especially with crypto—whether the recipient can use or convert the asset locally. Compare the amount the recipient will actually receive for the same corridor and payout needs.

Is sending money with crypto cheaper than a money transfer service?

There is no reliable universal winner. A traditional provider may charge an explicit fee and include an exchange-rate margin; a crypto transfer may involve network and platform fees, price movement, and a separate cost to convert the asset into local currency. A low advertised fee does not necessarily mean the recipient gets more.

For context, the World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide page displays a 6.36% global average remittance cost and lists its Q3 2025 report as the latest there; the page was last updated August 18, 2025. That is a dated global benchmark, not a live quote for your route. The World Bank Data Catalog separately describes a dataset covering 377 corridors across 48 sending countries and 111 receiving countries, with metadata current to September 2026. It is a different resource and update date, not evidence that the 6.36% figure is a current price for every corridor. The catalog also notes that non-transparent services are excluded from global-average calculations.

Other historical figures should not be mixed together as though they were the same measurement. The World Bank reported an average cost of 6.4% to send $200 in Q4 2023; within that benchmark, digital remittances averaged 5% and non-digital remittances 7% (June 2024 release). The IMF reported a Q1 2023 average of $12.50, or 6.25%, to send $200. These figures describe past averages, not the quote available from a provider today.

The IMF described the G20/SDG objective as a 3% global average remittance cost by 2030, with no corridor above 5%. Those are targets, not a promise that a particular route or service meets them. Costs can vary substantially by corridor, transfer size and exchange-rate margin.

Which is faster for an international transfer?

Do not assume that a blockchain transaction’s confirmation time equals the time until a family member can use the money. With crypto, the recipient may still need to access a wallet, use an exchange or other conversion service, and wait for a local payout. With a conventional service, delivery time can depend on its payout method and operating hours. Neither is guaranteed to be faster for every route.

The BIS describes remittances and other retail cross-border transactions as more costly, slower, less accessible and less transparent than domestic payments. In BIS Paper 167, published March 11, 2026, authors Stijn Claessens and Tara Rice write: “Cross-border payments (XBP), particularly remittances and retail transactions, remain more costly, slower, less accessible, and less transparent than domestic payments.” The paper also discusses interoperability and differences between institutions and countries as constraints. Its authors note that the views expressed do not necessarily reflect those of the BIS or its member central banks.

For an actual transfer, ask each provider for an estimated arrival time for the specific payout method. Check whether its estimate depends on business hours, identity checks, intermediary institutions or the recipient completing additional steps. A quoted arrival time is not the same as cash or spendable funds being available.

How much will the person receiving the money actually get?

Compare the final amount in the recipient’s currency—not just the sender’s fee or the number of coins sent. Use the same sending amount, destination, date and payout method when gathering quotes. Exchange rates can change, so compare quotes close together in time.

What to compare Traditional transfer Crypto transfer
Recipient’s final amount Ask for the amount after sender fees and any recipient-side charges, in local currency. Account for network and platform fees, any conversion costs, and the recipient’s final local-currency payout if conversion is needed.
Exchange rate Compare the provider’s rate with a reference rate, and note any margin separately from the headline fee. Check the asset’s value when sent and when received, plus the rate and charges for any local conversion.
Delivery and payout Confirm the route’s available options, such as bank deposit, cash pickup or mobile money, and the provider’s estimated timing. Confirm the recipient can access the asset and that a usable local cash-out or spending option is available.
Access and setup Check identity-verification requirements and whether the sender or recipient needs a bank or mobile-money account. Check internet and wallet access, any identity checks required by platforms or conversion services, and whether the recipient can manage the asset.
Problems and mistaken details Ask how to report a failed or misdirected transfer, what support is available, and whether the transfer can be stopped or corrected. Check how the wallet or platform handles mistakes, what support is available, and what recovery options exist. Do not assume a transfer can be reversed.

These are questions to ask of the named provider and route, not universal rankings. Available payout methods, fees, timing, recourse and account requirements differ by service and jurisdiction. The World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide resource can help compare traditional remittance costs by corridor, but it is not a like-for-like quote comparison with a crypto service.

Can the recipient cash out or use the crypto locally?

Only treat crypto as a practical remittance option if the recipient can turn it into something they can use. That may mean converting it through a service available in their country, withdrawing local currency, or spending the asset directly where accepted. Availability, fees, identification requirements and access to cash-out services can differ by location. A completed blockchain transfer by itself does not establish that the recipient can conveniently use the value.

IMF analysis identifies volatility, reliance on internet access and difficulty converting bitcoin into local currency or goods—particularly in less developed areas—as disadvantages. A volatile asset can change value while it is being transferred or before it is converted. The actual exposure depends on the asset and how long the recipient holds it; check whether the service converts automatically or leaves the recipient holding the asset.

Crypto also remains a small part of cross-border payments overall. IMF Working Paper 2025/120 estimates that traditional and crypto cross-border payments together represented about one quadrillion dollars in market value in 2024, while crypto accounted for only a small fraction. That estimate concerns the broad cross-border payment market, not remittances alone; payment patterns vary by geography, currency, payment type and transaction size.

How to compare the options for your route

  1. Set the same terms. Choose the sending amount, destination, date and payout method. Confirm whether the recipient needs local currency, cash pickup, a bank deposit, mobile money or crypto.
  2. Get current quotes. For each available service, record the sender’s total cost, exchange rate, estimated delivery time and amount the recipient receives. Use the World Bank Remittance Prices Worldwide resource as context for conventional corridor prices, not as a crypto quote.
  3. Add every crypto-side step. Include acquisition, network and platform fees, asset-price movement, conversion, withdrawal and any payout charge. Confirm that the recipient can complete each step in their location.
  4. Check access and recourse. Verify identity and account requirements, internet access, customer support, error handling and any applicable consumer protections with the provider serving that route.
  5. Choose based on usable value. Prefer the option that delivers an acceptable amount in a form the recipient can access, within the required time and with recourse you are comfortable with—not the one with the lowest headline fee alone.

Why the route and local rules matter

Cross-border payment systems involve different institutions, countries and regulatory approaches. BIS Financial Stability Institute guidance describes variation in how jurisdictions supervise cross-border payment providers and recommends risk-proportionate oversight. A provider’s rules, protections and availability in one country should not be assumed to apply in another. Check the requirements that govern the specific sender, recipient and service.

Because the sending and receiving countries, amount, provider, crypto asset and payout method all affect the result, no single current price, delivery time or legal conclusion applies to every transfer. Compare live quotes and local access for the exact corridor before sending.
