CrowdStrike participated in JumpCloud’s Series F financing announced on October 19, 2021. The round closed at $225 million, including an additional $66 million from Atlassian Ventures, CrowdStrike Falcon Fund, NTT Docomo Ventures and other investors. It lifted JumpCloud’s reported total funding above $400 million and its reported valuation to $2.625 billion. CrowdStrike’s involvement was strategic as well as financial: the companies pursued deeper integration between CrowdStrike Falcon and JumpCloud’s cloud directory.

What exactly did CrowdStrike invest in JumpCloud?

CrowdStrike was one of several participants in JumpCloud’s additional $66 million financing tranche. The announcement did not identify a standalone dollar amount attributable to CrowdStrike, so it is not accurate to describe the deal as a $66 million CrowdStrike investment.

JumpCloud said the complete Series F round totaled $225 million. At the October 19, 2021 announcement, the company reported more than $400 million in cumulative capital raised and a $2.625 billion valuation.

Why CrowdStrike backed JumpCloud

JumpCloud presented the financing as an effort to accelerate adoption of a modern, cloud-based directory among small and midsize enterprises. Its argument was that many organizations face operational and security limitations with legacy Microsoft directory deployments.

Rajat Bhargava, JumpCloud’s co-founder and chief executive, said customers of both companies were looking for an alternative to Microsoft for managing and securing infrastructure. He also described the investment as a way to pursue deep integration with CrowdStrike and Atlassian.

CrowdStrike’s stated rationale focused on security exposure in older directory architectures. Chief technology officer Michael Sentonas said JumpCloud was designed to address weaknesses in legacy products that threat actors actively exploit and to meet the needs of today’s small and midsize enterprises. Those statements describe the companies’ strategic position in 2021; they are not an independent assessment that every Active Directory environment is insecure.

The governance connection

On November 2, 2021, JumpCloud announced that Amol Kulkarni, CrowdStrike’s chief product and engineering officer, joined JumpCloud’s board as an independent director. The appointment gave the relationship a formal governance link beyond the financing.

Kulkarni said legacy systems such as Active Directory were not able to protect organizations against modern security threats. That is a company executive’s rationale for the partnership, not a finding from an independent comparative test.

What the CrowdStrike–JumpCloud integration does

CrowdStrike’s 2022 technical data sheet describes an operational integration built around Falcon Real Time Response. An administrator can use that capability to deploy the JumpCloud agent to Windows, Mac and Linux hosts.

Controls described in the data sheet

  • Patch management
  • Full-disk encryption
  • Local-user account controls
  • Endpoint diagnostics
  • Remote lockout, reset and wipe actions
  • Single sign-on (SSO)
  • Conditional-access multifactor authentication (MFA)

The practical goal is to connect endpoint detection and response with identity and device administration. Falcon can provide the response channel for installing or managing the JumpCloud agent, while JumpCloud supplies directory, access and device-management functions across multiple operating systems.

The cited integration document is dated 2022. It establishes the capabilities described there, but it does not establish that every feature, workflow or product limitation is unchanged today.

Is JumpCloud an alternative to Microsoft Active Directory?

JumpCloud is positioned as a cloud directory and cross-platform identity and device-management service, whereas traditional Microsoft Active Directory is commonly deployed as an on-premises directory service. Whether JumpCloud is a practical replacement depends on an organization’s applications, protocols, device estate, migration requirements and administrative model.

Decision area JumpCloud’s described model Traditional Active Directory model What to verify before switching
Deployment Cloud directory Legacy, commonly on-premises directory Directory synchronization, network dependencies and migration path
Operating systems Windows, Mac and Linux agent deployment is described Most familiar in Windows-centric estates Coverage for every endpoint, server and specialty device
Identity and device management Directory, local-user controls, SSO and device-management functions Strong native Windows domain-management model Application integrations, group policy equivalents and privilege workflows
Security controls Conditional-access MFA, patching, encryption and remote response functions are described in the joint material Often requires additional Microsoft or third-party services for equivalent cloud and endpoint controls Policy granularity, enforcement status and licensing dependencies
Endpoint response Falcon Real Time Response can deploy the JumpCloud agent Can be integrated with security tools, but the specific workflow varies by deployment Permissions, audit records and rollback procedures
Administrative burden Cloud delivery can reduce infrastructure operated by the customer Customer typically operates or supports domain controllers and related infrastructure Staff skills, directory redesign and coexistence work
Total cost Not established in the cited material Not established in the cited material Obtain current, like-for-like quotes including endpoint, MFA, support and migration costs

Calling JumpCloud an “alternative” does not mean it is a drop-in replacement for every Active Directory dependency. Organizations tied to Windows domain features, legacy LDAP or Kerberos applications, complex Group Policy designs or Microsoft-specific workflows should map those requirements before committing to a migration.

Who was JumpCloud serving when the deal was announced?

JumpCloud’s 2021 company description reported more than 120,000 organizations and more than 5,000 paying customers. A 2022 joint data sheet reported more than 150,000 organizations and more than 5,000 paying customers.

These are company-reported figures tied to their respective publication dates, not independently audited market-share measurements. They should not be read as current customer totals without a newer dated source.

What the investment does—and does not—prove

What it demonstrates

  • CrowdStrike viewed cloud directory and identity management as strategically relevant to endpoint security for small and midsize businesses.
  • The companies planned a concrete operational connection: Falcon Real Time Response could deploy the JumpCloud agent across Windows, Mac and Linux.
  • The board appointment gave CrowdStrike product leadership a formal role in JumpCloud’s governance.

What it does not demonstrate

  • It does not disclose how much of the $66 million tranche came from CrowdStrike.
  • It does not establish that JumpCloud is universally safer, cheaper or more capable than Active Directory.
  • It does not provide a current apples-to-apples price comparison.
  • It does not provide an independent performance or security test of either platform.

How to evaluate JumpCloud for an Active Directory replacement project

  1. Inventory dependencies. List domain joins, Group Policy settings, LDAP or Kerberos applications, privileged accounts, certificates, scripts and service accounts.
  2. Classify every endpoint. Confirm support and management requirements for Windows, macOS, Linux, servers and any devices that cannot run the JumpCloud agent.
  3. Design identity controls. Map SSO, MFA, conditional-access rules, local-user policies and administrator recovery procedures.
  4. Plan coexistence. Decide whether JumpCloud will replace, synchronize with or sit alongside Active Directory during migration.
  5. Validate security operations. Test Falcon Real Time Response permissions, agent deployment, patching, encryption enforcement, remote lockout and wipe workflows in a controlled group.
  6. Price the complete service. Request current quotes for directory, endpoint management, MFA, support, migration and any Microsoft or third-party components that remain necessary.
  7. Run a pilot and document rollback. Measure login reliability, application compatibility, help-desk workload and recovery time before expanding the deployment.

The Bottom Line

CrowdStrike’s 2021 participation in JumpCloud’s $225 million Series F was a strategic investment in a cloud-directory approach to identity and endpoint security, not a disclosed $66 million CrowdStrike-only check. The 2022 integration material shows meaningful cross-platform capabilities, but JumpCloud should be treated as a candidate for an Active Directory replacement or coexistence plan—not an automatic drop-in substitute. Validate technical dependencies, current features and total cost in a pilot.
