CrossOver 25 made more Windows games and storefronts work on macOS and Linux, but it is not a dependable Windows 11 replacement for every gamer. It runs Windows software without requiring a Windows installation, yet whether it suits you depends on your exact games, launchers, hardware and setup. Treat CodeWeavers’ newly working game list as a starting point, then check current compatibility reports before switching.
What CrossOver 25 changed for gaming
CodeWeavers announced CrossOver 25 on March 11, 2025. The release incorporated Wine 10.0, Wine Mono 9.4.0, vkd3d 1.14, MoltenVK 1.2.10 and D3DMetal 2.1. It also added DXMT, a Metal-based implementation of Direct3D 11 for macOS. Product Manager and QA Manager Meredith Johnson described DXMT as another option alongside wined3d, DXVK and D3DMetal. CodeWeavers said its QA team saw especially good performance benefits on lower-spec Macs; that is the vendor’s assessment, not an independent benchmark. Read the CrossOver 25 announcement.
The announcement also said Wine 10.0 included over 5,000 changes. That figure refers to Wine changes, not newly playable games or a measured performance gain.
Games and storefronts named at launch
CodeWeavers reported newly working support for Red Dead Redemption 2, Path of Exile 2, The Last of Us Part 1, Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, Avowed, Age of Mythology: Retold, Fallout 76, Manor Lords, Monster Hunter Rise, Dead Space, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Age of Wonders 4, Elite Dangerous, Nioh 2, Far Cry 6, Need for Speed Heat and Teardown. It also reported support for GOG Galaxy and Epic Games Store on macOS, alongside Steam improvements. These are release claims, not a guarantee that each game will work on every machine or software configuration.

Why CrossOver 25 does not guarantee you can ditch Windows 11
CrossOver is a compatibility layer, not a promise that all Windows games will run. Results can depend on the game, its updates, its launcher, graphics backend and operating-system version. A game appearing in the 2025 launch announcement is a useful lead, but it does not establish that the current version runs well on your particular setup.
CodeWeavers’ Compatibility Database collects reports on Windows games and applications in CrossOver. Check your exact game and read the entry notes; CodeWeavers’ Steam instructions also caution that some titles need extra steps.

Choose based on your games, not a broad platform claim
- Check each essential game: Look up current reports for the precise title before buying CrossOver or moving your gaming setup.
- Check the launcher too: Confirm the relevant store or launcher works for the game you intend to play; launch support alone does not prove every title works.
- Account for setup: Read notes about graphics backends and title-specific steps rather than assuming installation will be identical to Windows.
- Keep Windows available if needed: If an essential title is unsupported or unreliable in CrossOver, this evidence does not establish that CrossOver can replace Windows 11 for that game.
The sources do not provide controlled, current performance comparisons with Windows 11, a complete per-game test matrix or a measured rate at which gamers can replace Windows. There is no basis here to claim equivalent frame rates or rank the platforms on gaming performance.
Check current versions and system requirements
CrossOver 25 is no longer the latest major release: CodeWeavers’ changelog lists CrossOver 26.0.0 in February 2026. Advice specific to CrossOver 25 may not describe the newest release. For macOS 26 Tahoe, CodeWeavers specifies CrossOver 25.1.1 or higher, so not every CrossOver 25 installation meets that version requirement. Check the changelog and current product information before installing or updating.

CodeWeavers lists Intel and Apple Silicon M1-or-newer Macs running macOS 10.15 or later in its Mac requirements, with a version-specific compatibility table on the product page. Its Linux requirements call for x86-compatible PC hardware and specify software and graphics requirements. CodeWeavers cautions that compatibility is not guaranteed for Linux distributions released after the CrossOver version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When CrossOver 25 may make sense
CrossOver 25 may suit a Mac or Linux gamer whose particular games and launchers have current, favorable compatibility reports and who is prepared to follow any game-specific instructions. Its DXMT addition and reported storefront and game support expanded the options available, especially on macOS, but neither establishes universal compatibility.
