It does not mean every part of an app must be written once or will behave identically on every platform. The practical choice is whether to share the user interface, business logic, or both—and how much native integration the product needs.
For a team choosing an approach, compare languages and existing skills, UI ownership, target platforms, device and operating-system requirements, and the maintenance path. No framework is a universal winner for speed, cost, or performance.
What cross-platform mobile development means
Cross-platform development reuses code across multiple targets. Android and iOS are common targets, but the amount of shared code is a design decision. A team might share most of its interface and application logic, or share only business and data layers while maintaining separate native apps.
Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP), for example, lets teams choose what to share rather than prescribing a single structure. The Android Developers codelab describes sharing code across targets such as Android, iOS, web, and desktop; the Kotlin Multiplatform FAQ defines the approach as building for more than one platform. Kotlin Multiplatform documentation and the Android Developers KMP codelab explain these options.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
How the main approaches differ
These frameworks make different choices about language, UI sharing, rendering, and native integration. Their official documentation describes capabilities, not a uniform independent ranking.
| Approach | Language and UI model | Native integration and platform scope |
|---|---|---|
| Flutter | Dart toolkit with a layered engine and framework; Flutter controls its rendering path. | Plugins and platform channels connect Dart to host code such as Kotlin or Swift. Flutter can also embed native controls or integrate into an existing app. Its mobile release apps are compiled to machine code; web builds target JavaScript. See Flutter’s architecture overview. |
| Kotlin Multiplatform | Kotlin code can be shared selectively; teams can keep UI native or share more, depending on their needs. | Platform-specific implementations and native code remain available for requirements that differ by platform. See Kotlin Multiplatform documentation. |
| React Native | Uses JavaScript and React, rendering native UI components while application logic runs through a JavaScript runtime. | It is a distinct UI strategy from Flutter’s rendering architecture. The description comes from the Kotlin Multiplatform framework overview, not a comparative performance test: Kotlin’s framework overview. |
| .NET MAUI | A .NET cross-platform UI toolkit built around C# and .NET. | Microsoft lists Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, and Tizen as target platforms, with documentation for lifecycle, platform customization, device features, installation, and deployment. See Microsoft .NET MAUI documentation. |
| Ionic | A web-technology hybrid approach that uses a WebView. | Device features are accessed through plugins or native bridges, so verify that the needed APIs and user experience are supported. This characterization is from Kotlin’s framework overview. |
Choose based on your team and product
1. List platforms and device requirements
Write down the platforms you must ship on and the features that touch operating-system APIs, hardware, background execution, notifications, or other device capabilities. A product that needs only a narrow set of integrations may have different constraints from one whose core experience depends on platform-specific APIs.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
2. Match the approach to existing skills
Identify the languages and mobile experience already present on the team. A Dart-focused team may find Flutter a natural fit; a JavaScript and React team may prefer React Native; a C#/.NET team may have a shorter path with MAUI. KMP may suit teams that want to share Kotlin business or data logic while retaining native UI. These are fit considerations, not guarantees of lower cost or faster delivery.
3. Decide what should be shared
Ask explicitly whether shared UI is a product goal. If platform-specific interaction and native UI ownership matter more, selective sharing can keep the presentation layer native. If a shared interface is important, assess how the framework’s UI model fits the design and platform behaviors you need.

4. Prototype the hardest integration first
Choose the feature most dependent on a device API or platform behavior and build a small proof of concept. Check the available plugin or library, which target platforms it supports, and whether it meets the requirement without unacceptable compromises. If it does not, estimate the work to add custom platform code or a native implementation before committing to an architecture.
5. Check development and release constraints
Tooling requirements can affect the team’s workflow. Flutter’s platform guide says target development can require additional environment setup and that iOS development requires macOS. Its page identifies Flutter 3.47 and an update date of 2026-09-14; verify current setup instructions for your chosen release at Flutter’s platform integration guide. MAUI’s documentation covers its own target and deployment paths; confirm the relevant platform requirements there as well.

What cross-platform does—and does not—promise
Code reuse can reduce duplicated implementation, but it does not establish that a project will cost half as much, ship twice as quickly, or need no platform specialists. Native integrations, platform-specific behavior, testing, and release workflows remain engineering work. Official framework documentation describes ways to share code and reach native APIs; it does not provide a controlled, comparable scorecard for cost, speed, or runtime performance.
For context rather than proof of a general outcome, the Kotlin Multiplatform documentation’s 2026 Duolingo case study reports more than 40 million daily active users in 176 countries and weekly Android and iOS updates, and says KMP is increasingly helping the team deliver features faster. Those are figures and claims presented by that case study, not independently audited comparative evidence or proof that KMP caused the company’s scale or release cadence. See Kotlin Multiplatform case studies.

Capture app and web screens for development workflows
When a team needs screenshots of web pages for design reviews, bug reports, or documentation, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is separate from the decision about which mobile framework to use; its one-call capture can help automate a web-page screenshot.
Or skip the browser setup
Use this cURL request to capture a page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Frequently Asked Questions
Does cross-platform development mean one codebase for everything?
No. Teams choose which layers to share; an app may share business logic while keeping its UI and some integrations native.
Which framework is fastest or cheapest?
The cited framework documentation does not establish an independent, comparable winner for speed, cost, or performance. Evaluate your team’s skills, target requirements, and the native work your product needs.
